Today was our last day at Glacier and what a day we had. We decided to go for distance over elevation and walked the trail along the north side of Lake McDonald. It was mostly level with just a few elevation changes, but meant walking 3 miles from Apgar to the trailhead, 6 miles on the trail and then about 3 miles back to the highway to catch the shuttle bus back to where we left the car. It was quite a trek (12 miles total if you didn't add the numbers), but well worth it. We started by going through a burned area left from a major fire in 2003. Dramatic from the fire damage, but also filled with wild flowers and lots of green growth since plenty of sunlight without the trees. We started ... read more

Greetings from Glacier National Park! Next year will be their 100th anniversary and they are already starting the celebration. The park is as beautiful now as it was when we were last here 37 years ago. A new feature which is great is a shuttle bus system that runs east and west across the park. Cuts down on traffic across the park and makes it possible to go on the Going to the Sun Highway and across Logan Pass at 6646 ft. without driving. Makes it much easier to see the spectacular views. We drove it on Wednesday since we wanted to get to the Many Glacier area which doesn't have shuttle bus access. David is riding the shuttle today so he can see the view. Can't take your eyes off the road to enjoy it ... read more

Spent another day in the very nice Glacier Park. Drove to the Saint Mary's Visitor's Center and took the shuttle up to the Logan's Pass Visitor's Center. Walked the trail up to Hidden Lake, which is probably the one you are thinking of, mom. Had to trudge my way through the snow for probably 3/4 of the way, and I did see some mountain goats when I got near the lake overview. Took the shuttle back down to the Saint Mary's Falls trailhead and walked to Saint Mary's Falls and Virginia Falls. Got a little wet from some rain, but not too bad. Took the shuttle back to the Saint Mary's Visitor's Center and drove back to Two Medicine Lake. Walked on a trail there to Paradise Point and Aster Falls. Headed back to the hostel ... read more

Drove in to East Glacier from Spokane today. Drove in on the Going-to-the-Sun Road, which was spectacular. Lakes, trees, mountains, islands, waterfalls, the weeping rock. Forgot that I lost an hour, so I didn't have a lot of time to explore today. The hostel is near the Two Medicine Lakes area, and I was able to walk a couple of trails around there to a couple of waterfalls. Planning on driving my car up to the shuttle area for the Going-to-the-Sun Road tomorrow to walk some more trails.... read more

Each trip has ups and downs. Leaving Yellowstone, we were on quite a high (pun intended, our elevation at camp was 7700ft) heading towards Glacier National. We had seen much wildlife, and had a great hike. Both of us were excited about Glacier thinking it would be even more impressive, less populated, and more dramatic in the scenery. We were a little unsure of the weather however, as it was already cold at Yellowstone and not sure how much colder Glacier would be. The drive was fairly unremarkable (8hours of sameness) until you reach Browning, MT. Now Browning, MT is either in the outside and very close to the Blackfeet reservation or in the reservation (signs were unclear). Most tourists will miss this town on the approach because the bigger highway skips it. We, trying to ... read more

(Comments welcome and enjoyed to any and all entries!) Well, I did make it to Glacier National Park and as I’m writing this, I’m CAMPING! I guess if you call backing up the Suburban into a campsite camping, then I’m camping. I’m currently at a campsite in Glacier called Sprague Creek right on Lake MacDonald. It really is cool with the sun about to set just across the lake from my campsite. I decided not to pitch the tent, knowing how easily I get aggravated. So, I’ll spend my first night sleeping in the back of Old Gray. I had enough aggravation getting here today from Missoula. There was about 20 miles of road construction on Highway 93 heading up here. I guess Chicago isn’t the only place with 2 seasons: winter & construction. But, I’m ... read more

The Hikers My boss, Ann, introduced me to a local women's hiking group. They hike every Thursday. Sometimes the hikes are in the park, sometimes not, but they are always long and usually pretty hard. To date, I am the youngest in the group. The baby. It's nice. Usually, I am the old lady of the group. It is, however, very humbling to hike with these women. If I am the oldest, I can use that as an excuse when I fall behind. Not so here, and I do fall behind. They are fit. Very fit. The oldest in the group is 77 and she can go faster than me, if she puts her mind to it. They are a very diverse group. Many are retired, some are housewives, and the ones that do work, have ... read more

We had many miles to cover in a day so started early and got the games cranking early. Nicola's American states jigsaw puzzle came in handy, we quizzed each other on categories like all the east coast states, all the states that start with m, all the states that start with vowels. My american geography improved dramatically over those few hours. Andre got peeved with the ridiculous pre pay pumps at the petrol stations. That's a lot of p's. You have to pay beforehand so it becomes impossible to fill the tank as you don't know how much you need. I thought he was gonna turn into Hank off Me, Myself and Irene and go beserk. Once finally at the township of Whitefish we checked into the local best western, our new hotel of choice, before ... read more
