FedEx Clerk: We don’t accept cash for prepay items. Me: You mean you don’t accept cash for post pay? FedEx Clerk: No, prepay, you need a credit card or we can’t send your package. Oh, or a fedex account. Me: Can I set one of those up without a credit card? FedEx Clerk: No. I used to believe that credit cards represented an amount of actual money/cash/legal tender that we had or would have in the future but apparently I was wrong. Cash is now a poor and not universally accepted representation of one’s credit cards. Don’t think this is just FedEx. KU accepts cash for pretty much nothing, even the machine where you insert cash to put it on the much more widely accepted KU ID/Debit card is dusty from lack of use. I tried ... read more

Good morning all. Slept well; awoke at 6:30 am CST. That's sleeping in for me. The Friends if the Congo explain the concept of time is more about the event than about the time of day. Rachel and I had dinner with them at Trinity United Methodist Church. The group I'm travelling with are members. Mark is the Pastor, and his wife, Julie. Steve, his wife Stephanie, and their two sons. And, last but not least, "Guy" Mande. He's from the Congo and has coordinated my entire event. He'll be interpreting for me on legal issues. Rachel has been phenomenal through all of this; I'm just along for the ride, she's handled all of the paperwork. I Love You Rachel! Well, time is tight. For now, at least, I'm still guided by the almighty Clock. My ... read more

While in Kansas City, MO over Flag Day weekend visiting my friends Greg and Judy, I wanted to do something special for Flag Day. One of the things on my to-do list is to visit the Harry Truman Library in Independence (just outside the city). So on Flag Day, June 14th, I planned to check this off my bucket list. (It's also my brother Tony's birthday- Happy Birthday Tony!). So what about The National World War 1 Monument/Museum asked Greg? What a World War 1 museum in KC? The answer was no and no because I did not know one existed. Plans changed and off we went to see this awesome museum on Flag Day. There are too many highlights of the museum, so all I will say is WOW. WOW from the walk across the ... read more

Today I slept til 11AM then called Darrel and asked if he was ready for go to a bike show. A call to Roger to confirm where it was and we were off. Darrels son Nickolas came with us. He was passenger on Darrels bike. I had planned to eat lunch there but there were not any vendors. I ran into several people I knew. Floyd Fleming was one of the first ones. Central Midwest HOG group. He was there displaying his 1950 Indian Warrior. It was a bike that he and his father had rebuilt and brought back to life. I asked hime why the hell he had a harley ... read more

21 MARCH 2009, Kansas City, MO -- It was one early day. The riders wanted in at 7:30AM or something like that. They were going to serve breakfast burritos to the riders that came that day. A free will offering for the food. I was there at 6AM because TAG (Thomas Gillespie) was going to start his bun burner back to CA. A Bun Burner is a certified Iron Butt Association ride of 1500 miles in 36 hours. He wanted to leave at 6AM and I volunteered to be one of the witnesses. TAG on the Wednesday before that Saturday morning was in Iraq. He is a US Marine and member of our post, that is how I met him. He reminds me of my son. Always smiling, always eager. All he wanted when he got ... read more

At least, if a friendly twister decides to come along and give me a concussion that can send me on a magnificent dream, leaving me with a pair of...emerald boots...Anyway, Oz potential aside, I will be blazing a trail through Kansas tomorrow on my way to Jim Bishop's Castle. Today I departed at Noon after several final fairwells, and quickly made it to St. Louis before succumbing to my weariness, pulling over, and taking my first Volvo nap, a three hour slumber from which I awakened revitalized and ready to roll across Missouri in the dark of night. Reading the billboard signs as I drove along, a few stood out and especially intriguing to me. They all shared one common message "Free Wireless"!!!!!! So, thats how I came to be in this La Quinta breakfast area ... read more

On January 10, 2009 Darrel called and said that we were going to the bike show. Wide Open Bike show to be more specific. Show opens at 10am I have to work first but then away we go. Darrel brings his son Nicholas. I was surprised that I kept running into people I knew. A lot from the American Legion Rider (ALR) group, some from Patriot Guard and then some from HOG. One guy walked up to me because we had chatted at the Central dealership once when I was there. I was getting hugs everywhere. People that know me know I am a hugger. “Marines hug”, that’s what one old jar head told my son the day he was presented his Eagle Scout badge. A truer statement has not ever been said. Anyway there were ... read more

I'm officially sitting and waiting for my flight to leave this city for just over five months. Crazy. I said the goodbye to the parents, the brothers, the dogs and now I wait to leave. My flight is a lil delayed. My trip is all ready a bit changed. I was going to Los Angeles early so I could spend a few days with Dave but he ended up getting a job in Toronto for a couple weeks. He is going to be in a movie called "Suck" with Iggy Pop, Moby, Alice Cooper, and a few others. I'm happy for him that he has been working so much but wish I could have seen him. Oh well. I fortunately have loads of friends in LA that are there to hang with me before I venture ... read more

Geo: 39.103, -94.583We went to Kansas City for a wedding. Very nice and sentimental jewelry was stolen. Numerous phone calls to the hotel were never returned. :-( It was a beautiful and expensive hotel with some not-so-nice staff members who apparently had sticky fingers. The wedding was beautiful, I drank wayyyyyyyy too much wine, and the drive home was very long and quiet. :-/... read more

A lot has happened in September. I had originally planned to just use this blog site for my '09 trip to New Zealand but have decided to modify it a little to lead up to that trip and include other stuff going on in my life. My dad died on August 29th at the age of 89. He had been declining for approximately 2-3 weeks. After surviving an untreatable blood condition 2 years ago his passing was sad but not unexpected. Two weeks later, Sept 9th, I lost my youngest son, Matt, age 34. Matt had suffered a severe brain injury at age 7 and even tough he was very functional we constantly lived with concerns of seizures which ultimately caused his death. I have not even begun to cope with his passing. He was a ... read more
