This is a beautiful city. We are staying at the Raphel Hotel at the Plaza. It is a historic hotel that has been refurbished. Our "room" is the biggest suite we've ever stayed in. We arrived Wednesday late afternoon and after a short rest headed out to Kauffman Stadium to see the Royals play the Twins. They lost 11 to 2 as one Royals fan t-shirt read "the best minor league team in the majors." This would be a great place to see a Red Sox game. Our seats behind 1st base cost $25.00! Hot dogs $1.00!!!! Even with air fare and a room it would probably be cheaper then Fenway and you can always get tickets. Yesterday we spent the day in air conditioned comfort at the Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art. They just opened a ... read more

Happy Hollow Farm Made it to Eric’s farm in Jamestown, Missouri. 80 acres of forest and 10 acres in production, and since Kristen saw him last, he has built a new home and greenhouse! Took a walk to the spring fed creek where we waded around ankle deep, in the drizzle, and Kristen and Eric caught Em up on their old road trip stories over PBR! Visited with the cows and sized up the buckwheat field. Eric showed off his new, crazy loud motorcycle and the Allis Chalmers he converted to ELECTRIC! It’s fabulous! Stayed up late yapping about farms and forests and friends! Another excellent part of our journey. Oh, and we were sent off this morning with some of Eric’s famous garlic! Man, life IS good! It’s raining like Noah’s coming and thank ... read more

Having had enough of Key West, we drove to the Fort Lauderdale airport and I jumped on a plane to Kansas City to visit Laura and James. James was at the other end to meet me - isn’t it such a treat when one is met at the airport? So often, I am making my own way. He dropped me off at the bar where Laura was and we spent a lovely evening catching up, seeing some friends and eating great Italian food. The next day was Laura’s birthday (she’s a few months older than I, so I never miss an opportunity to celebrate that fact with her). She and I had a fabulous lunch together talking about all kinds of things and solving the problems of the world. We then went on a birthday pub ... read more

Well, the first blog update probably doesn’t have the pictures you expected, but it was the start of the adventure so I thought I’d include it anyway. Nikki (and the tow truck driver) thought I was un poco loco for taking the pictures in the first place. I won’t argue with that. So Nikki and I were headed home the day before departure and we were just finishing up our last couple errands and soon the car would be parked for three months straight. In accordance with Murphy’s Law her car lost power as we crested a hill on Ward Rd, coasted for a while and then sputtered to a halt. We were only 2 miles from home. Fortunately Nikki’s friend Tiffany, who she’d just discovered lived in Lees Summit, came to the rescue. The plan ... read more

11/22/2006 1:10 PM Pulled into Kansas City a little early so we all hoped on the internet for awhile waiting for the sound man to arrive. Sound check went smoothly and the club was really nice. They made us a couple of big pizzas, one vegan for Martin and Laurie, and another with every kind of meat they had for the rest of us. One of the guys from the first band brought some hummus and pita that he made at home as well. Martin was a bit upset that the promoter didn’t show up at the venue until about 10:30, but he did arrive. After the show Brian finally found a way to get all of the gear in the cargo bay so that it wasn’t bouncing around in the cabin. For some reason we ... read more

We're still in the land of the living, just without any phone or internet reception so sorry if you haven't heard from us. First off, I'm not at my job anymore (surprise, surprise I can hear you say over the Pacific). I survived 2 days which is pretty good I think :) The trainer advised us that she is going to spend $10k training each and everyone one of us and then proceeded to ask us where we want to go within the company. Now, it's quite obvious that I'm not going to stick around so I parted ways. I must say though, it is the first job induction that I've ever been too where they warn you not to bring a gun to work with you!!! Russ and I decided that we both weren't ready ... read more

Once again, my famous sleep in is back and I’m only rolling out of bed at 10.30am. My cell phone has run out of credit while speaking to Toni trying to organise the third Western Union Money Transfer. It just so happens that Ginny has Western Union at her work so I’m going to make her go in on a day off. How sweet am I! It’s slightly overcast today and a sprinkle of rain hits as I wait in the ‘Red Light’ parking lot. No sign of the Big Black Pick Up (Ladies) Truck, either. It’s not a bad area where I am staying to be honest. I’m in Overland Park, Kansas City. Very nice houses and very affluent people here. Ginny has good timing because when she pulls up it starts raining a ... read more

I woke up first thing and raced down towards the coffee shop to get a morning fix of caffeine before I left today for Kansas City. It did wake me up but that was because of its horrible taste! Yuck! I think the beans must have been under roasted or something, the coffee tasted really raw and it wasn’t the best way to wake up. I would have had to have gotten up at some random hour of the morning to catch the first bus over to Kansas City, instead I arrive at the terminal around 10am and the bus won’t leave here til about 2pm. I watch President Hugo Chavez’s tirade on CNN in the bus terminal and it’s actually great entertainment. I thought I was going to be bored for the next four ... read more

Having gone to bed way too late the night before, I slept in a smidge (but not too much). Had some waffles and Fillipino bread awesome-ness for breakfast and I was on my way to Kansas City, MO. Some highlights of the drive: * Illinois is pretty darn boring (see the IL pic) * Iowa isn't much better (see the IA pic) * I was mistaken for a 12y/o boy at a gas station in IA (she was very confused when I handed her my credit card...) * Apparently, the International Wrestling Institute and Museum is located somewhere along I-80 in IA * I saw some sort of heron (I'm assuming blue) in both IL and IA. I'm taking it as a good sign * It was spitting rain all through IL and IA. Blue skies ... read more
