Geo: 39.103, -94.583I got up at 7:30, checked my email and flight. I was not upgraded to business, but there appeared to be 5 seats available still. Could be my lucky day. After showering and repacking everything for air travel, I left around 8:30 and got to the airport around 9:15. When the lady at the ticket counter couldn't figure out how to get me properly checked in, I suspected that my upgrade may be imminent. As it turns out, I was right, 14 hours of relaxation ahead! The return home was mostly uneventful. I watched several good movies including "The Way Back" and "Rabbit Hole". By the time I got home, the hike from yesterday really set into my calves. Time for a long nap!... read more

Geo: 39.103, -94.583Late last year I became acquainted with a Kansas City based non-profit named Outreach International. It works to help break the cycle of poverty in several developing nations around the globe. It's president offered me the opportunity to tag along on a week-long work trip to rural areas of the Philippines northeast of Manila. I've had an interest in these types of international efforts since before I began traveling abroad. I hope to "learn about the business" so to speak, and also lend a more immediate hand to my hosts. On with the report... The outbound flights should be an exercise in comfort as I have premium cabin seats as far as HKG and a row to MNL. The hardest part of the journey will be getting up at 4am this morning to catch ... read more

She was getting anxious as I was brushing the dried mud from her hair and mane, tossing her head and looking from side to side. Placing my hand on her head, right between her eyes seemed to temporarily calm her. I had her lead line tied to a tree as that seemed to be the only thing that could hold her when she decided she was done standing. The saddle blanket sits a little further forward on her wither than it does with Diego, my Leopard Appaloosa. The blanket only seems to agitate her further, but I am convincing myself that she needs to be ridden and broke from being sour. She just does not want to leave the comfort and safety of the herd that roams the pasture. I set the saddle gently down ... read more

After visiting the National World War I Museum, I must say that it is an extraordinary monument to the achievements and hardships faced by the Allied soldiers during The Great War. In addition, the museum now shows the “Man and Machine: The German Soldier in World War I” exhibit so we can see the war through the other side. It was truly amazing how the museum was laid out with the central circle being a chronological timeline that takes you from the beginning through all the important events and then to the end. Along the way there are personal writings and the thoughts of people who were actually there and experiencing what we can now only read about, imagining what these soldiers went through trying to survive such a dark and violent war. The first ... read more

Geo: 39.103, -94.583The return trip was a bit more interesting with respect to having no bags. First of all, I had to go through security 3 times, yes 3 times at this airport. The first time was right at the entrance to the airport before you even check-in, the second was at customs, and the third was right at the gate.I checked in at the ticket counter and the guy was like "where are your bags?" and I said I didn't have any and we had a funny brief conversation about how hilariously awesome he thought that was and let me on my way without any more questions.I cleared immigration and customs without any special problems, and headed to the Star Alliance departure lounge. It was dismally small and had nothing of interest to me except ... read more

Geo: 39.103, -94.583After work, I headed over to the KCI for departure. When I board the economy bus, I definitely feel like some kind of outsider, like I'm just hitching a ride to the terminal to meet some arriving friend on a delayed flight. The ticket agent doesn't mention anything about my bagless state on check-in and so off I went to security. Now, any astute traveler will instantly see the flaw in my bagless plan. With so much crap stuffed in my pockets, it is going to be a pain to put it all in a bin without taking my pants off. Although I would never flinch at stripping down to my underwear if I though it would make every feel safer, I'm just going to have to tolerate that two times on this trip I'm ... read more

Geo: 39.103, -94.583A company called SeV makes specialized travel clothing with lots of pockets. They have run a few challenges along the lines of global traveling using their gear without the aid of additional bags - the No Bag Challenge. I tried to enter their latest contest, but was a few days too late in my submission. Instead, I'm going to try my own No Bag Challenge on a brief trip to Dubai. Why Dubai and why now after just returning from the Middle East? The primary reason that I mentally committed myself to achieving 1K status with United this year (approx 100,000 flight miles), and a trip to Dubai would put me right at this number. Secondly, I am a big fan of ultra-tall buildings, and Dubai just finished building by far the tallest human ... read more

Lately I've been thinking a lot about where I was at this time last year and often feel sad about not being able to travel the world and living free from anything other than where my next distination will be and how I will get there. Then on days like today I'm grateful for where I am and who I am able to be around. I've been in what some may call hibernation for the last year (I've even deactivated my facebook). In just a few short weeks it will mark a year of being back in the states and I still feel as lost as I did when I got here a year ago, lost in knowing what I want to do with life and who I am. It's sad and scary and often in ... read more

Geo: 39.103, -94.583Today my wife and I are beginning a trip to Jordan and then onward to Israel and the Palestinian territories. We left KC after work and headed out toward Chicago for our connection to London. The most interesting part of the day was being able to get into the airline lounge with my recently acquired StarGold card. Just cheese and crackers for food but at least they had outlets and free wine. Predictably, service in the USA is sparse.... read more
