Coming up on 24 hours until I leave for Newark. I haven't packed yet, also forgot my laptop charge cord at work. Need to pick up some shorts too. Right now I am sitting at the American Royal in a Clinton Anderson clinic watching him work with horses. It dawned on me what a paradox my life is being a corporate technology person yet avid horseman. Likewise now I'm sitting in an arena full of dirt, tomorrow I will be on a 15 hour flight to a major population center half way around the world with 35 million people. Weird.... read more

The immunization clinic recommended tetanus, hepatitis A and B, typhoid, polio, and H1N1 for my trip so off to the doctor I went. After getting jabbed 4 times and getting three prescriptions (for malaria, diarrhea, and sleep aids) the pain really started when they swiped my credit card for $300! It was 4 band-aids later that I realized the band-aids hurt more than the shots, at least when you try to remove them. I was a little head achy, they had warned me I might, but it could have just as well been stress at work or the power of suggestion. ... read more

So today was finally an easy day...the drive atleast. It still sounds like there is a bucket of bolts in the engine but I really do not care. I have been fighting a head cold for a few days at it appears to have the best of me. I am just exhausted. I have managed to avoid all the weight stations in prior states...they were either closed or for trucks over 26,000 gross. Actually I did pass through one but they waved me through...in Wyoming. So here, entering Missouri I see a weight station. All trucks over 10,000 must stop...heck I think my books in the truck weigh that. I pull in with my father and step mom and one of my dogs in the truck behind me. A State of Missouri officer walks infront of ... read more

TGAIO - Thank Goodness August is Over! August has been a busy travel month. It started with Caribana Festival/Parade in Toronto Canada , then the Iowa State Fair, WW II Honor Flights and ending the month with the American Idol concert in Kansas City. More later on the State Fair and Honor Flights. Some background, I must confess that I’m a TV junkie with news and reality competing for my attention and at times, my reality shows overshadows my love for politics and the daily scandal/murder and so forth. This occurs in the winter when American Idol (AI) captures my attention, January to May. I’ve been watching the show religiously since season two and in the last two years, AI stepped up the show by allowing the talent to play instruments. I believe this is why ... read more

We did make it to Kansas City the next night. It was a very long drive. Nebraska was mildly better than North Dakota, mostly because the size of the insects we had to scrape off the car were smaller (in North Dakota they were like locusts and additionally made a crunchy sort of sound as they hit the car - like the first scene in Men in Black). We actually stopped at a gas station that I was afraid to get out of the car because there were so many bugs everywhere. It was nuts. Another thing that made the drive through Nebraska slightly better was the thunderstorm we got to watch as we drove. It went on for well over an hour! Seriously, over an hour of near constant lightening. It was extremely entertaining - ... read more

Good evening United States! This is the official start of my travel blog that I'll hopefully use to chronicle my travels across Europe for the next four months. Officially until I depart Kansas City for Copenhagen! This time last year I was deciding how to fit my life into the bed of a pickup truck...this year I'm currently baffled how my life will fit in a suitcase less than 50 lbs...thank you Continental Airlines. This will be a test of my packing genius. Tonight my family and I watched a Rick Steve's show all about Copenhagen! It was absolutely fabulous and got me super pumped for Europe! More to come later! Zach... read more
