Mom

I am a full time Mom. That is kinda all I ever wanted to be. I wanted the white picket fence, dog, and two kids. I pretty much got it. Some would say I did and some would say I didn't. I think it is just how you look at it. I have two grown children who are both in college now. I made some mistakes along the way raising them...some small and some big. I hope they grew up with a strong foundation in family. I married a Navy sailor when I was 20 years old and we moved to Hawaii early in our marriage. We spent the last 20+ years moving all over this country for his career. We moved 13 times and lived in 8 different states. My girls were home schooled until 10th grade with only brief periods in classes during those 10 years. I worked while my husband was in college in an Emergency Room on night shift. I began to love emergency medicine and got my EMT license in 2 states. I am a swimmer. I started swimming competitively at a young age and continued till my teen years. Later I coached, taught beginning swimming and life guarded. Now days I still swim occasionally for fitness.

I started this travel blog so I could talk about my upcoming drive across country. My oldest is transferring from a community college to a university right before I move and my youngest is moving to Florida with my husband and I. We were living in Florida when he retired from the Navy but we came home to Washington State to look for a job. We forgot how cold it can be up here and started looking for a job back in Florida. He found a civil service job and we began to prepare for our move again.

So buckle up and enjoy the ride!

So today was finally an easy day...the drive atleast. It still sounds like there is a bucket of bolts in the engine but I really do not care. I have been fighting a head cold for a few days at it appears to have the best of me. I am just exhausted. I have managed to avoid all the weight stations in prior states...they were either closed or for trucks over 26,000 gross. Actually I did pass through one but they waved me through...in Wyoming. So here, entering Missouri I see a weight station. All trucks over 10,000 must stop...heck I think my books in the truck weigh that. I pull in with my father and step mom and one of my dogs in the truck behind me. A State of Missouri officer walks infront of ... read more

WOW someone from Penske was smart enough to let me drive the truck to Sioux Falls. The best part....the check engine light never came on. Oh well Jethro and Jimbob said there was a problem. Atleast no one had to ride with them. I could see how bad this was going to be. Out in the middle of the plains with no cell phone signal and a couple of crack heads....NOT!!! Anyway so here I am...waiting and waiting while 4 movers hired by Penske are taking everything off the old truck with the engine light that remains intermitent and placing it on the new truck. I am sitting with my father who has driven behind me in a second truck (apparently I underestimated how much I had accumulated in 22 years of marriage). The mosquitos are ... read more

Ok...so stopped about 1 hour before Spearfish to buy gas. I had been driving with the gas light on for a while. Then as I am coming to a stop the check engine light comes on. I fill it and check all the fluids and everything is fine. Check engine light goes off and comes on again about 5 miles later. I get into Spearfish and decide to call Penske. They are going to send over a mechanic to the hotel to look. Here come the mechanics in a worn out beat up Chevy. Blowing smoke as they come up the road, my faith is not restored. They climb out of the truck squishing their Marlboro cigarette with their steal toed boot as they step. Jimbob (name changed to protect the "guilty but had a good ... read more

Today we drove out around 9am. We had to stop by my storage unit and load all the rest of the itmes. First on the way to the storage unit I had to take the big truck down a "orange cone" course. Only took out one....not bad. The truck has no power. Dad called me from the truck behind me and told me to press the gas...hahaha...yea like I wasn't doing that. Literally I was going 25 over the mountain pass. Guess I am too heavy. You can actually watch the gas gage move...and when you fill it with Diesel you can actually watch my heart stop when the pump reaches $100.... read more

Wow too much stuff. I needed another truck to get everything loaded. Of course I realised this about 2:30 in the afternoon. Penske was able to get me another truck to load. I hired the slowest movers in the entire state to load the truck. Fortunatly they were cheap. Such is the reason they were so slow. I picked up the second truck about 4pm and talked my father into a free ride to Florida following me in another truck. I still can't believe I needed two trucks. The gas alone is gonna eat my savings. Both trucks were loaded by 10 pm on Monday night after I got bossy and took over the loading. Locking the truck and going to Mom's house to sleep.... read more

Just returned from a 7 day Alaskan cruise in the middle of this move. It was planned 10 months ago so it just made sense to work the move around it. It was quite fun we spent many hours in the card room playing Texas Holdem' and finding other ways to part with our money on the ship. On to the move... Home today to wash laundry and pack the remaining few items. It amazes me to think that I have packed everything in a room and I look behind a soda bottle in the kitchen and there is a trivet...not packed. So the BIGGER question is....do I put the trivet in a box with electronics that is still open in the family room, or how about a box with dog toys in the laundry room??? ... read more

Uggg.....I think there must be over 100 boxes in this house. My kitchen has become a labyrinth to the coffee pot. While that may be good for someone who wants to cut down on their coffee consumption it is frustrating to me as I stub my toes while making my way for that 6 am cup of java. I have no motivation and no energy left. Thank God my sister came to help me or I would just sit and stare at the massive amount of boxes there were to be packed. Packing is such a boring thankless job. I have a new respect for packers and the job they do. Packed my husbands leather and sheepskin coat. Actually it was the last item in that box of clothing in my room. Hummm...what to label the ... read more

So begins this blog with a push from my sister Laura and a nudge from my mother to "make it funny". What a daunting task. Funny is not something that can be bought when you run out or borrowed from a neighbor. Funny is something that happens when you least expect it. ... read more
