I suppose many would contend that a visit to Maine is incomplete without a visit to Acadia National Park in Bar Harbor. I know that was my sentiment when planning this journey. I had been exposed to so many glowing reports by so many people from such diverse backgrounds that had visited from so many different locales. All these people from hither and yon cannot all be wrong. Have you ever set your expectations far above the reality of the situation? I try to avoid prejudging good or bad but have fallen victim to that curse in the case of Acadia. My expectations were much greater than the park could deliver. I must say the weather did not cooperate either. On my drive from Appleton ME on Tuesday August 7, 2012, I passed the Fort Knox ... read more

Today Sally and I took a drive thru Acadia National Park. The entrance to the park is right outside of Bar Harbor. The drive around the park was unbelievable!! Don't know how else to describe it. Because it's a national park I was able to use my senior park pass. You can purchase it at age 62 at any national park or any National Park office for $10. With the pass, you never have to pay again to enter a national park. Anyway, the drive thru Acadia was amazing. The road winds partway along the coast and then goes thru deep green forests. We drove to the top of cadillac mountain where we were able to see Bar Harbor and a panaramic view of Frenchman's bay. There were two cruise ships anchored in the harbor today ... read more

Hello from Bar Harbor, Maine. Sally and I drove up to Bar Harbor this morning. It's about a 2 1/2 hour drive from where we're camping. Didn't want to have to drive back tonight so we're staying in Bar Harbor overnight. Arrived at about noon and checked into our hotel. Found out that we have beat the high season by about a week. The hotel manager said that they were full starting next week for most of the 2012 summer season. Left at 2:00 pm for a 2 hour cruise of Frenchmans Bay on a 150 foot long four mast schooner, the Margaret Todd. Myself and two much younger gentleman helped raise one of the sails on the Margaret Todd after we left the dock. (Not a pretty picture)!! That was a lot harder than I ... read more

Or as the locals might say, “Bump-ah to Bump-ah in Bah Hah-bah”. Despite gaining an hour during our journey from Nova Scotia overnight, we seemed pressed for time this morning. We hustled up to the Lido for a quick breakfast. Continental service starts at 6:30, but hot breakfasts aren’t available until 7:00. We had an 8:00 AM meeting time in the Showroom for our excursion, but needed to clear immigration first, starting at 7:30 AM. Actually it was closer to 8:00 AM before the immigration folks from Homeland Security were onboard. There were more than one disgruntled passengers waiting in line, into and through the casino and to the Explorer’s Lounge where lines were separated into the U.S./Canadian line and Other Non-U.S. citizens. We finally got up to the immigration agents, who were asking everyone where ... read more

Hi All -- Early this afternoon Bob and I left his sister Judy’s house and headed to Gettysburg where we are right now. But, since I’ve fallen behind on these blogs, the following photos are from our three-day stay last weekend in Acadia National Park, including a trip to Deer Isle nearby. We visited Acadia last fall for six days and found it to be irresistible. So we couldn’t resist coming again this year. This visit the weather was calm with not much wind so we don’t get the dramatic photos that we were able to take last year with huge plumes of water as the waves hit the rocks. But it’s an awesome and magnificent place even without the drama. Following is a description from the official government website of the interesting history of the ... read more

Hi! I'm resending the photos from the last blog so that you can open them. I was in a hurry to get this out yesterday and forgot to re-save each photo in a much smaller size. I did that this morning so that you should be able to open these photos much more easily. Each blog takes between 2 -3 hours -- selecting the photos and editing them, writing the narrative, then sending them via the internet which takes around 1/2 hour if it's a good connection. We have a hard time getting a decent WiFi connection on these trips and usually when we do it's for a very limited time. So sometimes, in my rush, I screw up. Sorry. Paula ... read more

Hi, All – We’re now in PA visiting Bob’s sisters for a couple of days. Unfortunately, Bob now has a severe case of shingles which has been coming on for a couple of weeks. In fact, the doctor he saw this morning thinks he should be in the hospital right now getting some steroid shots to build up his immune system so that he can recover from this before permanent damage is done to his body. We have 10 days left before returning home. I just hope, for Bob’s sake, that these days are completely stress free. He’s in severe pain right now. Anyway, to continue with our trip . . . The following photos go back about a week, beginning with the day we left Grand Manan Island on a ferry and drove to St. ... read more

09/25/2011 Revisited Acadia National Park since the fog has lifted for today. We will be able to see Cadillac Mountain, Which is the first land in the U.S. that sunrise touches, even though it is only around 1600 ft. above sea level. Even though it was sunny in Bar Harbor, whale watching was cancelled due to fog 22 -25 miles off shore. 09/24/2011 Stayed over extra day to try whale watching again. Yeah!! we are going. We went out on a jet powered catamaran, the Atlanticat, saw harbor porpoises, seals, many sea birds, and what they called a teenage humpback whale(which you will see was almost impossible to get pictures). 09/27/2011 Travel day. Overnight in Bristol, NH. 09/28/2011 Travel day to Metcalf Acres Campground in Schroon Lake, NY. Traveled scenic hwy in the dark, it was ... read more
