We left early today knowing we had a long drive in front of us. We had planned to stop at a local maple sugar farm to see how it was done and get some pure maple syrup. I found a place on the internet that looked exactly like what we were looking for. I plugged in the coordinates on the GPS and off we all went. When we arrived at Morse Maple Farm, no one else was there. We went in and watched a 15 minute video on how they get the sap that Mr Morse narrated. What a character he was! They had a sign posted saying there were “cuss” words in the video that may not be appropriate for young children..well I immediately sent mine out. Mr Morse told the story so well we ... read more

25 July, 2013 Tuesday morning we left Plymouth and drove north on Hwy 25 until it turned into I-495. We then enjoyed the relatively light traffic on I-495 as it bowed west of Boston and we followed it until it ended at I-95, not far from the New Hampshire State Line. The morning started out muggy-hot and overcast, but it turned to rain before too long. We slogged through rain mixed with fog with poor visibility at times. But as I said, the traffic was fairly light and no one was driving crazy. In New Hampshire and Maine I-95 is a toll road, but the toll was not expensive, even pulling a trailer. The weather cleared by late afternoon and we stopped for the night in Poland Spring, Maine, at a very pretty campground. We did ... read more

Geo: 44.3875, -68.2044We left Boothbay Harbor, Maine this morning and drove 2-1/2 hours to Bar Harbor, Maine, traveling along the coast most of the way. We had lunch in the restaurant/shops area of Bar Harbor, and then walked around the town. We then drove around the island on the outside of Arcadia National Park, to Northeast Harbor, Bass Harbor, and Pretty Marsh. We arrived at the campground around 5:00 pm.The plan is to hike in Arcadia National Park tomorrow, and spend another night at the campground. This will likely be the farthest northeast that we will hit on this trip. We start heading towards home after tomorrow, but won't be back in Richmond until a week from Monday or Tuesday.... read more

Waaaaaaa. It's tooooooo hhhhhhhhhhhhoooooottttttttttttttt ...... (I did NOT, I repeat, did NOT say that out loud). BUT 34 degrees C at 10:00 o'clock this morning with increasing humidity as the day went on. Maine! Land of lobsterpounds, la-la, and no helmet laws. The border crossing at Saint Stephen, NB into Maine was on a bridge over the Saint Croix River. My US border agent clearly didn't attend the same charm school as my interrogator at the Soo, and we entered the US very seriously indeed. In front of us in the 3 car lineup was a large Harley, with two riders dressed in muscle shirts and small helmets ready to be ripped off once across the line. Welcome to the norm in this state. Only the gringos wear jackets, boots and gloves, and they're also the ... read more

So, once upon a time, we started this roadtrip, which I call “url=http://biggestballofstring.wordpress.com/2013/03/10/to-deadwood-south-dakota-in-a-disposable-car/Adventures in a Disposable Car“. As mentioned, the plan was to drive one way, from Calgary to Halifax, Nova Scotia, through the United States, and then fly home. BUT the car only made it to Omaha, Nebraska. We rented a car at the Omaha airport, but since we had no intention of returning it to the pick-up location, we weren’t allowed to drop-off the car in Canada. So, we immediately came up with a Plan B (or C or D), which was: we’ll drive the car to Bangor, Maine, and then catch the Greyhound Bus, from Bangor to Bar Harbor, and then, from Bar Harbor, we’d take the ferry to Yarmouth, Nova Scotia, where ... read more

Well, here we are in Maine. When we crossed the boarder they took away my tomato's, and grapefruit. Apparently you can't enter the states with some fruits and vegetables from another country, even Canada. The couple we met at our last Canada campground are joining us for a Canadian Thanksgiving tomorrow, yep Turkey (on the BBQ) and all the dressings. We stayed here for 3 days and had a look around the country. By the way Bar Harbor is pronounced "Ba Haba". We had some interesting conversations because of the accent. Then we travelled west across Maine to Bangor and into New Hampshire. Our first campground being in the White Mountains (in the Appalacians). Scenery was great and we seem to be following the fall colours as we go along. We were going to go into ... read more

Acadia was the first National park east of the Mississippi and is the most visited National Park. I am very happy that we came here during the shoulder season when it was far from its summer hustle, bustle, and crowds. The campground we were at is was a large campground and was perhaps a quarter full. We did the normal touristy stuff. We walked the streets of Bar Harbor while we decided where to eat, we drove the scenic road of Acadia and stopped to see the different sites and exhibits, we took pictures from the top of Cadillac Mountain and I bought some fabric to commemorate our visit. Additionally we made a side trip into Ellsworth to shop at the LL Bean outlet. I lucked out and was able to buy a pair of jeans ... read more

I woke this morning early after a fairly good night’s sleep, made coffee and put a warm fleece on to have my coffee outside. Marg and Oscar were still sleeping so I didn’t want to make too much noise. It was beautiful out, the sun had just risen so there was that magic light everywhere. We had a busy morning planned so I showered, got dressed and started moving things to our new site which was just the next one down. Marg and Oscar got up and helped and in no time we were moved and settled. Marg made us oatmeal for breakfast and we sat outside eating it enjoying the view. We left at 8:30 for a wagon ride near Jordon Pond which was about 45 min away. Oscar wasn’t too happy with the horses ... read more

Sunrise and Sunset It’s still dark but we’re going. Yes, sunrise on Cadillac Mt. Apparently when one is in Acadia you must do sunrise on the mt. We just dressed and were on the road by 5:45 A. M. The sky was getting brighter as we traveled along, would we make it! When we reached the summit the parking lot was almost full, it must be the thing to do. I took a picture of the people waiting to witness this every day event but somehow it felt special. There was a reverence about the crowd, an anticipation, of something special. And special it was. Many pictures. At 6:30am it was all over and we all went back to our everyday lives. We drove home to have a hearty oatmeal and walnut pancake breakfast then it ... read more

Acadia It seems 7 am is the wake up time. There was a decent breeze and the air smelled of fresh salt water. The tide is out so rocks are exposed with seaweed draping over them. A contrast of mustard yellow and black. After some morning chores Oscar was content to just lay in bed so I took my chair, coffee and binoculars and resumed my pose of last night. No peace this morning though. I was watching a sea gull walking over the rocks in search of breakfast. He was very protective of his territory and I witnessed one very violent encounter. Then he resumed his food hunt and went into a tidal pool, looking around. He seemed to be doing a little dance then looking down in the water. It finally dawned on me ... read more
