9/24/11 - Bar Harbor & Acadia National Park Woke to rain this morning so got a late start. Went into Bar Harbor to buy tickets for the whale watching cruise tomorrow, then rode through Acadia National Park. GREAT park, but could not see the long views due to fog - - hope for better view tomorrow. Thunder Hole and Cadilac Mountain were impressive even on this rainy/foggy day. Stopped at small store for handmade roast beef sandwich and then ice cream cone Picked up lobster and fixin's for LOBSTER LOUISIANA STYLE - - Zatarain's Crab Boil, onions, lemon, small red potatoes, and corn on the cob. IT WAS GREAT!!!! Caught up on the blog and watched LSU beat up on West Virginia. Score now 47 to 21,... read more

Ah...a real vacation! It had been about 5 years since I’d been on a real vacation...you know, one that takes you out of the state that you live in. For the past 5 years my breaks were spent in Vermont. I’ve always enjoyed all of the activities that Vermont has to offer for each season of the year. It’s always kept me busy and happily entertained. The main purpose for the trip was to see my mother prior to heading out to Thailand...This ended up falling through for various reasons, however I decided not to cancel my plans to go. Instead, my three friends and I rearranged the plans and headed straight to Acadia National Park. My friend Megan has family that lives in the vicinity of so she knows the area fairly well. It was ... read more

July 16 Puffin Day! We left our motel room in Machias at 6:15am for the half our drive to Cutler Harbor and the Bold Coast Charter Company. Fifteen eager photographers and members of the Massachusettes Audubon Society plus myself were met in a little dingy by Captain Andy Patterson who explained the days procedures. The tide was out (all seventeen feet of it!) and the boats in the small classic New England harbor were moored near large seaweed covered boulders or on long lines attached to tall piers that were exposed by the low tide. The weather was perfect for our half day excursion to Machias Seal Island, the largest puffin colony ten miles off the coast of Maine! All sixteen of us were well bundled in layers except for Andy who was in shorts and ... read more

Het weer ... read more

Gday again! Fantastic day here. Started with a great bus trip around Arcadia National Park, then we decided to do our own thing. 16 km hike through the park in some of the most fantastic scenery we have ever seen. It reminded us that that is one of the reasons we came here at this time. Perfect day again helped a lot but it was especially nice to get away on our own. Its a good group but with 52, it can be a bit taxing ....... Mainly Americans, about 8 Aussies 6 kiwis 4 Poms and 2 Isrealis. Reckon thats nearly a United Nations Quorum. Bar Harbor is a beautiful spot but it was a little overawed today with two major cruise ships and one smaller ship in pouring their guests ashore. Really stretched all ... read more

Hello again Left Ma for Me - traversed NH along the way. Heavy day in the bus - with jetlag finally catching up with us both. pretty drive tho the beach is more handsomely rugged than beautiful. Weather has been kind to us again although it is getting noticibly cooler as we move northerly. It may aslo be starting to turn. Have seen plenty of autumn colors so far - but for the areas we have been, a couple of weeks ago might have been better. We will see what the next few days bring. The housing here is quite different but attractive in its own way. Mainly wooden shingle cladding. Not quite sure why they do that. Tour company threw on a lobster dinner tonight whuch was brilliant but messsy. We all got extensive lessons ... read more

Hello all my dear family and friends. We have now officially left our "home and native land" and are in the land of the "star spangled banner". We stayed in Canada for just about as long as we could, travelling on our motorcycle. It got to be that we had to start travelling later in the day and stop earlier in the evening as the cold weather is upon us now. The daylight travelling was still amazing with temps mostly in the high teens or low twenties, but early morning and the evenings ------ just to COLD!!!!! So---- into America we went. I guess am getting ahead of myself and should back up and start where I left off with this most amazing journey. Sept 17, 2010. It was a rather uneventful night on the ferry, ... read more

We made it! Finally we are here and we couldn't be happier. It is weird to be all the way across the US again only this time we are at the top instead of the bottom of the U.S. We arrived here on Monday after traveling from New Hampshire. The roads here are mostly two lane country type roads and not interstates or highways. That said, the going is very slow. The good side to this however is that you see a lot of beautiful country you just have to not be in a hurry which we are not. We are staying in a very nice RV park and it is very quiet and virtually empty which is wonderful. It closes down for the season on October 24th so most people have already been here I ... read more

Ahoy Maties! ARRR! What a grand and glorious day--somehow it has made me talk like an Irish Pirate. We started out under gray and looming clouds in Gorham, New Hampshire, and explored enough to find breakfast and the famous Shelburne Birches--in fact, we circled back to see them again. One can see why Robert Frost was inspired. As you see, the leaves have not yet turned, outside of a tiny tease, but still and all a beautiful stand of trees. So, we hit the road for 147 miles out of the White Mountains and across Maine to the Atlantic Sea Coast and Bar Harbor. "147 miles? Why would that take 4 and a half hours?" Well, this is Maine, and we spent half the day on Highway 2, a two lane "route" and were sent by ... read more

Bar Harbor always manages to bring me out of the bad mood that embarkation day always puts me in. The sun is out, i can spend time with friends, and drink all the smoothies i can handle. Theres another ship in the harbor today, apparantly its a royal carribean ship. Its massive! Hurricane earl was a whole load of nothing! We only get CNN on the ship for our news and they made such a big deal over it, telling us that there would be 30ft waves and 100mph winds. It got really foggy and then rained for about an hour, that was it! I was expecting damage, i was expecting the gangway to end up in the water, i wanted whales flying into the side of the ship. But nooo....everyone is very dissapointed. Also i'm ... read more
