Today was a beautiful day. A little cool but sunny. We spent most of the day catching up on laundry, etc. Sometimes when you are travelling, it is good to have a day that you can just rest a bit. And, like I mentioned the other day, it seems like there is always some kind of maintenance to attend to on an RV. It is just like a home..it is always something. This afternoon we drove to Bar Harbor. It is really a nice little town. I believe that the population is around 5,000. I think the Bar Harbor area covers about 63 square miles. It has several large older homes. Some of these have been turned into Bed & Breakfasts. The downtown area near the harbor has lots of shops and restaurants. We walked down ... read more

Yesterday morning it was 40 degrees as we left New Brunswick and drove to Trenton Maine which is near Bar Harbor and Acadia National Park. We enjoyed our time in Canada but I was glad to be back in the U.S. There are several things that I saw in the past few days that I wish I had a picture of. First, clotheslines in New Brunswick. I still use a clothesline but I have never used one like these. Many of the houses in New Brunswick have higher foundations than we do in the states. So, they have steps and usually back porches. Attached to the back of the house are pulleys with clotheslines attached. Usually, there is a pole or building in the backyard where there is another pulley attached. So, you just have to ... read more

When I was walking back into the hotel with my camera following the sunset the other evening, I needed to speak to the lady at reception about something and she mentioned that the best sunrises and sunsets can be seen from Cadillac Mountain. I decided that I would head up there for the sunrise despite it being at a rather anti-social 5.20am. Cadillac Mountain is very handy in that you can drive all the way to the top, so it's not like a two hour trek was required beforehand. I got to the car park whilst it was still quite dark and there were a handful of other cars already there, however it began to fill-up quickly. By the time I had worked out the best place to go, there were already several people with their ... read more

No fat, self-service, buffet breakfast today (with or without tips) as we were all sorted having stocked-up at the supermarket yesterday. We had planned to walk across to Bar Island today, but that can only be reached at low tide. Unless we were prepared to go at some unearthly hour in the morning, low tide was at 2.00pm, which gave us a perfect excuse for another morning relaxing and the kids having a mess-around in the pool. The causeway to the island is exposed between about one and half hours before low tide and one and a half hours afterwards. We got there at about 1.00pm, which allowed plenty of time to walk across, walk up to a nice view point on the island and walk back, with no real risk that we would end up ... read more

After the full-on three days at Boston and the long day travelling, today was designated a do nothing and relax day. We spent the morning sleeping and by the pool, and also catching up on things like postcards home and this blog. We also decided to change rooms in the hotel as the previous one was right by some air-conditioning units which were making a racket all night. We drove to Bar Harbor, but it was pouring with rain, so we decided to find a supermarket to stock-up on supplies. There is a Walmart about 15 miles back into Maine, so we drove there and spent our time checking out what American supermarkets have to offer. We didn't realise that what they had to offer extended to shotguns and semi-automatic assault riffles. They were nowhere near ... read more

Say "New England" and we think lobstah!! Our quest began in Portsmouth, NH and continued into Maine and Massachusetts. I'd be embarrassed to admit just how many we devoured along the way. After arriving at Logan International, we picked up our rental car and headed to Portsmouth, NH to have dinner with our friends, Dana, Carol, and John. Our first taste of lobster was sitting dockside along the Piscataqua River. It was a fun evening with good company and classic harbor views. We were delighted with the beach town of Ogunquit in southern Maine. The Marginal Way Walk along the rocky coast and the 3 mile long beach made this a two day stop of walking and exploring. As we drove north, we encountered many quaint towns along the coast. Camden, Port Clyde, and Bellfast were ... read more

The wakeup call Sharon requested rang shortly after the alarm I’d set on my phone alarm for 5:30 AM. We went up to the Lido to eat before meeting in the Showroom for taking a tender ashore for our whale watching tour. I had some Swiss Muesli, grapefruit juice, cantaloupe, watermelon and some rolls; while, Sharon had a chocolate croissant with her French Toast. After breakfast we gathered ourselves together, and went to wait for our tour in the Showroom. Unfortunately, they announced that our tour had been cancelled due to rough seas in our whale watching area. So, we are going to have another leisurely day, walking around town a bit, and we’ll need to take it from there. We decided to go ashore later, and stopped by the library to pick up today’s Sudoku ... read more

We enjoyed the extra hour of sleep as we awoke this Fourth of July. I got the gym again this morning, concentrating on the arms today. When I got back, there had been an announcement that we can clear US immigration at any time up in the Exploration Lounge. We decided not to wait for our 9:15 AM appointment, go there now, and then head to the Dining Room for breakfast before it closes at 9:00 AM this morning. I went with the oatmeal and banana and the Frittata Italiano again, and Sharon had French Toast. We met another couple, Vivian and John at our table for eight were from California. We exchanged contact info, as she expressed an interest in the blog that we write. The Captain announced over the PA system that due to ... read more

Weds:Back in the US of A, and so we needed to be checked by US Immigration - luckily this is not a service that has been closed down following the Republicans/Democratic standoff. I guess Bar Harbor might be called touristy, even tacky - on a sunny day (like today) it's cute!! We took the tender ashore and then walked one of the prettiest shoreline walks you can imagine - one snag, it was only a mile long. We headed inland and, shock, found a coffee shop and then, shock horror, JC bought a hat - see photo!! After more strolling we stumbled across a line (i.e. queue) at an ice cream parlour. Seeing the various sizes on offer, we were wimps and wisely settled for small cones (two enormous scoops!!) of gorgeous ice-cream - JC's was ... read more

Geo: 44.3875, -68.2044 We got up this morning to a beautiful day. Sunny and about 70 degrees. We went on several hikes around a couple of lakes. Its beautiful here. I'd say that about one quarter of the trees have turned either a brilliant red or yellow. What we thought would be a simple hike around the first lake, turned out to be quite a challenge. The path was all large rocks and boulders that had fallen down from the steep side of the mountain. Our bed and breakfast is very nice. The place is on the National Registry of Historical Places. It is a large house built in 1888. Tomorrow, we will go for a drive around the rest of the island and some more hiking. The weather is supposed to be a little cooler, ... read more
