Today was a beautiful day. A little cool but sunny. We spent most of the day catching up on laundry, etc. Sometimes when you are travelling, it is good to have a day that you can just rest a bit. And, like I mentioned the other day, it seems like there is always some kind of maintenance to attend to on an RV. It is just like a home..it is always something. This afternoon we drove to Bar Harbor. It is really a nice little town. I believe that the population is around 5,000. I think the Bar Harbor area covers about 63 square miles. It has several large older homes. Some of these have been turned into Bed & Breakfasts. The downtown area near the harbor has lots of shops and restaurants. We walked down to the harbor area. There were three cruise ships anchored there. One of these was the Queen Mary 2. I believe that at least one cruise ship comes in every day. The harbor area is really pretty. We decided to have an early supper so that we could drive to Cadillac Mountain in Acadia National Park to watch the sunset. Since we were in Maine
and Bar Harbor, I thought I should try the lobster. I think it is too much work to get the meat out. Don't think that I will have to do that again. There are too many other varieties of fish that I like better. We walked up the street and got an ice cream and headed toward Cadillac Mountain. It is the highest point on the eastern seaboard at 1,530 ft. As most of you know, I am not a good traveler. And, steep mountains and winding roads are not my thing. It was really cold up there. There were lots of people up there taking pictures. I let Jim take the pictures and I sat in the truck with Rich. Yesterday, in my blog I mentioned the free shuttles in the park. I thought they were just in the park and found out that the shuttles, called Island Explorer, had eight bus routes linking hotels, inns, and campgrounds with destinations in Acadia National Park and neighboring village centers. These shuttles offer free accessible transportation to hiking trails, carriage roads, island beaches and in-town shops and restaurants. I mentioned yesterday that these shuttles are funded by the Federal Transit Administration,
State of Maine and local agencies. I read an article that said that since 2002 that L.L. Bean, the Maine outdoor gear and apparel retailer has donated over $3 million to Friends of Acadia to support the Island Explorer and Acadia National Park. Leon Leonwood Bean found L.L. Bean in 1912. Four years later, Acadia National Park was created. In the years that have followed, L.L.Bean and Acadia National Park have grown together to become two of the most popular visitor destinations in Maine. L.L.Bean's Flagship store in Freeport is open 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. It has more than 3 million visitors every year.
