Hello again -- We've been here in this park of stunning beauty, Acadia National Park, since Sunday night -- and today is Thursday. We've seen two sunsets and one sunrise on the top of Cadillac Mountain, the highest point on the State's eastern seaboard and the first place touched by the sun most mornings. We've walked some and biked some and driven every road in the Park. This afternoon we plan to kayak using Bob's sailing kayak which can tow mine. Unfortunately, it looks as though we may have to leave tomorrow because of Hurricane Earl heading this way. Last year's storm that hit this park caused the drowning of a young girl who was swept away by a huge wave. So I suspect they'll be quite cautious this year in protecting the visitors. I hope ... read more

Week 3, Camping in America During the previous week Simon and I have been trying to sort out renting a car, much to our misfortune we were unable as the car rentals decide that the person driving the car must also be the person paying for the car and therefore hold a credit card, which Simon does not, well, did not own at this point in time. Luckily enough Claire and Ian have some great neighbours who are also close friends of theirs, Mary Ellen and Paul lent Claire one of their cars so Claire was able to lend us her very nice Subaru Forester, perfect! We loaded the car up and headed out early Monday morning, destination - Bar Harbour in Acadia National Park, our American Road Trip was under way :) We had decided ... read more

I have contacted Travel Blog about the confusion the comment block is causing after the first picture. To see all the pictures scroll down below the block. I have been on the go for weeks and have covered a lot of territory. I took the opportunity during the week I was in Rochester, Massachusetts to go to visit Newport, Rhode Island and also go to John Kennedy’s Presidential Library in Boston. From Cape Cod I made my way up to Bar Harbour, Maine. I saw Harbour spelled with the ‘u’ and without. The RV park where I was staying for four days is on one of the little bays close to Arcadia National Park and lovely. From Bar Harbour I moved down the Maine coast to Old Orchard Beach, then back into Massachusetts just north of ... read more

Cadillac Mountain is the highest point on the Eastern seaboard north of Brazil, and the first place in the US to watch the sunrise. We were among the few to be there at that time of morning. You realize that that means the alarm rings at 3:30 am. Up in the north, the summer sun rises around 4:30 am. So much for those drinks in the inn's bar. But the day before our sunrise photo session, being the planner that Keith is, he figures a drive around Mount Desert should be our first look at Acadia National Park. The park encompasses over 30,000 acres, and the island is 12 miles long and 9 miles wide. All along the Park Loop Road we stop at the scenic overlooks and are awed by the views. We arrive at ... read more

Although looking forward to our trip, we didn't give it a whole lot of thought as to exactly what we would find in Maine. We were invited to spend time with some family up there, and figured it would be a good reason to also see Bar Harbor. The dates snuck up on us and by the time we realized it was time to pack our bags, we were making our descent to the small airport. A friendly passenger was filling us in on where to eat and what to see, when the clouds gave way to a body of water dotted with islands. They are The Porcupines Islands in Frenchman Bay. The small airport is staffed with welcoming personel, bringing to mind the bare-bones airport in Marsh Harbor Bahama. As we drove off to find ... read more

This is the second time I have gone to Acadia National Park in Maine. And it is simply gorgeous. I recommend it to anyone that is up for a good adventure, that is not too far away from most East Coast Americans, but also to anyone that wishes to come. I camped at this National Park for a week with my family and two others. It was great being in the wilderness like we were. One trail that I loved was a trail called Precipice. My dad, my sister, and the other two families decided to take the challenge by going on this hike in 90 degree weather. It was Maine...didn't make much sense to me, but it was all good. There were signs posting that it was 'not for the faint of heart', for people ... read more

Whew......alot happened since we last blogged, so hopefully you'll hang in there with us to the end! Monday we drove from Vermont through New Hampshire into Maine, where we had a big surprise waiting for us......more about that later. It was a beautiful drive through mostly wooded areas. We took a small detour to see this covered bridge, and then had to stop to check out the old one-room school house. Tom even saw a bear crossing the road in front of us! (I didn't catch it, probably because I was busy looking at the map). Saw several large stands of birch trees, and learned that the paper birch is the state tree of NH. Back to the surprise: Tom and LaVonne are friends that live in Spokane, WA, former Pizza Hut owners that Tom worked ... read more

A+ . Jacques... read more

It’s the fourth of July and what better way to spend it than with the people you love ! The six of us slept sooooooo good last night ! We were completely exhausted from all the excitement yesterday but we were ready for a new day. Acadia National Park was calling our name ! The Bar Harbor KOA is a wonderful campground with great amenities and beautiful views of the Western Bay. We decided that we would head on up to the showers and get ready to explore. In the spirit of the fourth today, Lynn wore a red shirt, I wore a white shirt and Tim sported a blue shirt. I must say we were looking quite patriotic ! We packed up the motor home and headed out for Acadia National Park. On the way ... read more

Bonjour! We have just crossed the Canadian border and are on our way to Montreal! I do have to rewind a bit to fill you in on our last day in Maine! Yesterday, we spent the entire day on the water in Bar Harbor. We took a morning cruise on LuLu’s Lobster boat in search of grey /harbor seals and lobsters. We had a wonderful captain named John who was extremely knowledgeable on the area. He was great with all of the kids on the boat as well. He took us out a couple of miles and then the kids were able to watch seal pups playing on the rocks at Egg Rock Light House. There was also a young bald eagle there for us to see. The seals were swimming in the water right next ... read more
