Grand Manan harbor
Our last view of the harbor and town. Hi, All –
We’re now in PA visiting Bob’s sisters for a couple of days. Unfortunately, Bob now has a severe case of shingles which has been coming on for a couple of weeks. In fact, the doctor he saw this morning thinks he should be in the hospital right now getting some steroid shots to build up his immune system so that he can recover from this before permanent damage is done to his body. We have 10 days left before returning home. I just hope, for Bob’s sake, that these days are completely stress free. He’s in severe pain right now. Anyway, to continue with our trip . . .
The following photos go back about a week, beginning with the day we left Grand Manan Island on a ferry and drove to St. Andrews, New Brunswick, probably the loveliest town on the coast of NB. According to the AAA book, “St. Andrews was settled by United Empire Loyalists in 1783 following the American Revolution. Many of their white clapboard houses were dismantled, barged from Castine, ME, and reassembled; the houses can still be seen today. . . More than 250 homes in the historic district are 100 to
Swallowtail Lighthouse from ferry
This was seen from the ferry. Bob and I hiked from the house on the far left to the lighthouse, lots of hills and valleys. 200 years old. The heart of the town still looks much as it did in early photographs.”
One painter we talked to told us that none of these building can be torn down, “But,” he said, “some should be.”
We spent the night in St. Andrews, crossed over to the US the next day and spent some time in Eastport, ME, which, as so many towns we saw, was scenic and struggling.
That night we arrived in Acadia National Park, the next blog.
