This blog entry is specific to Key West. My ship entry is here: http://www.travelblog.org/Oceans-and-Seas/Atlantic/blog-681988.htmland Nassau is here: http://www.travelblog.org/Central-America-Caribbean/Bahamas/Nassau/blog-681996.html. Wednesday we were up bright and early - we had arrived to key West! We got off the boat to explore for a little bit before our 9:30AM hop excursion meetup time. ( Early, I know, but we had to be back on the boat by 2:30PM for departure.) We wandered around to Mallory square and took pictures of the ship. We saw how everything centers around Duval Street and also marvelled at the chickens and roosters that were everywhere. By 10AM we were on our way to our first stop on the bar hop, with stickers identifying us at th... read more

The fam and I usually do a January getaway every year. We really don't have a choice as Tennessee is completely gray for most of December through March. (Howevs, this year we didn't get below freezing til just this week I think... so it was actually about the same temperature back home as it was in Key West, especially since Key West was going through a SEVERE WINTER BLAST. It was like 45F, chill out Floridians, that is NOT cold LOL) ANYWAY, we left for the airport at 6:00am on New Year's Day. Never gonna do that again. Hungover/still kind of drunk from NYE, barely 2 hours of sleep, and food poisoning. It was not a fun day for travel, but when it only takes 4 hours to get to the beach, I really can't complain. ... read more

Waking up after a long week and craving a getaway, a decision was randomly made...Key West baby! Escaping Miami's crazy tourists for just plain craziness. We piled in a car with what looked like enough bags for a cross-Atlantic move, drank our coffee, and cranked the music. It was the start of a weekend getaway only three hours south of Miami, but mentally a first class flight. As we arrive to the Key we search the address for our hotel, Casa 325. According to the site, it sits on the main strip of Duval Street, but lays "nestled" away. Nestled indeed...it took us three rounds around the block to finally notice a narrow cobblestone path leading to our little cove. Note that at 11 am we were not all with the program just yet. As we ... read more

Gilles Labruyere sent another nice cartoon - it summarizes my trip completely accurate: icebergs are everywhere. But here in Key West, they melt faster. I plotted in the meantime my trip so far, and we are by far on the most Southern point here (24'33"), and DDN is closer to the equator than ever. And the most Northern point so far was Ilulissat (69'14"N), so we have changed latitude quite a bit. Today we start heading back North, Regina finds it too hot here. But apparently, Key West is one of the colder spots in the US at the moment, a heat wave seems to be in the mid-west. We'll see... ... read more

Now DDN had its well deserved rest of four days, while Regina and I enjoyed our stay with Steve & Marga: one day the Cocoa Beach, then Manatees and alligators in the wilderness of the Blue Springs of the St Johns river. Next day we went with Bob and Glenys to the Fantasy of Flight airplane collection - many beautiful and rare airplanes in an exhibit in Polk city near Orlando. A great airplane museum, although the founder Kermit Weeks sees it more as an entertainment park. And yesterday we went with Marga to the Morse Museum in Winterpark, which has the largest collection of Tiffany art. Each of these events was a nice vacation in itself, and we enjoyed our stay very much. Steve & Marga, Bob & Glenys, please visit us in Leiden when ... read more

We Drove...and drove...and....opps...ran out of land! We drove down and across the Florida Keys. The Keys are a set of islands south and west of the tip of Florida. Many of them are connected by bridges, 48 bridges actually. The bridges were originally built by a guy named Flagler. He had them built for trains. His idea was that if he could get people to the islands, they would spend money and they did! Unfortunately, a big hurricane took out some of his bridges. When they were rebuilt, they were built for cars and trains. So, his plan worked and people came, and people spend money! Many wealthy people fell in love with the islands and built beautiful homes on the islands. They also built many hotels along the beaches. One of the keys, url= http://www.fl ... read more

Wednesday 8th June 2011 – Friday 10th 2011 Wednesday morning started at about 3.30am as we had to be on our way by 4.15am to leave the car in the long-term parking area and then book in for our flight. We did have enough time to go to the United Lounge, Ed being a member. Here, we were able to have a cereal breakfast and take some fruit for the 4 hour flight to Fort Lauderdale. The flight was quite comfortable, we having seats with extra legroom thanks to Ed's frequent flyer status, and some sleep was caught up. We had a quick lunch before going to claim our baggage, only to find our bags were lying abandoned on the now still conveyer. There was a slight delay in picking up the hire car but when ... read more

Leaving Sanibel we down through the Everglades down to Key West. What a Longgggg drive. I am amazed at all of the things I remember. The 7 mile bridge is still there, but so much better. It is a long drive down the Keys. We were at a great little B&B across the street from the Hemingway House and next the Lighthouse, plus one block off Duval, Lighthouse Court. Once there, we met up with my niece Stephanie. She has lived there for the last 10 years. The perfect tour guide. We headed over to Mallory Square for Tapas at at great little Cuban restaurant. Then we hung out for the Sunset Festival. Stephanie had to work that night, so we were on our own. Oh, oh! We started the bar crawl on Duval Street at ... read more

I've been home for a week and its been over 2 since I started my trip in Key West blog. I have contemplated dumping what I wrote so far and forgetting about the whole thing, but I decided to keep it and do what I can to finish about our last trip and carry on to our next one, whatever it may be. (I think its gonna be Disney). I currently hate Key West. I think I just stayed there too long. I currently think Key West is the pretty girl that is great for a couple of days. Then by day 4 or 5 you realize she is a bitch, robs people as a career, and might have a penis. We went to Mallory Square once to see the sunset. It was cloudy out on ... read more

Geo: 24.5471, -81.8042Today we traveled all the way down the Keys to Key West which is the southernmost point of the continental US. The trip down the Keys is about 120 miles each way. Key West is only 90 miles by water from Havana, Cuba. The Keys consist of about 100 islands the larger of which are connected by bridges and causeways - one of the bridges is 9 miles long. Key West has a long history having been originally settled by the Spanish. Henry Flagler built a railway connecting Key West to mainland Florida. Unfortunately a hurricane and 18 foot tidal wave wiped out the railway and much of the construction on the islands. For years Key West was only accessed by boat until Florida designated the area as a tourist area. Prior to that ... read more
