We've been wintering in Key West, Florida for 4 years now and have absolutely fell in love with the place! Having experienced various other destinations around Florida and the Golf areas, you really need to be that far south to avoid the occasional rainy, cold weather that sometimes seeps into Florida in the winter. And anyone who's been knows that the weather can get real bad even in Miami in January. In fact, in 2011 we watched as frost warnings were issues north of the Keys while the worst we had to deal with was overnight lows approaching the 50s. Another big draw for us is the ability to get to Key West by car. We love to drive and our lifestyles allow us get to wherever we're going at whatever pace pleases us. These days, ... read more

We've had two very fun full and active days in Key West since our last blog entry. If you tuned into our last entry, you know that it was cloudy, rainy and cool, and that we were hoping for sun and heat. Well we got it...and we took advantage of it...maybe a little too much. We started Tuesday with a breakfast out at The Wouthernmost Cafe and Bar, where we had short order style breakfasts to get our energy up for the day. The Omlette was good, but a bit greasy, and the rest was okay. We followed this up with a short drive into the Fort Zachary Taylor State Park to enjoy the beach. The ride was short, only about 5 minutes, and once at the beach we saw that it was rather beautiful, but ... read more

We've had two very different days in Key West. One clear and hot, the other raining and cool. Yesterday was clear, today is rainy. Rainy rainy rainy. We left our Key Largo place at about 10am, and started driving south on Highway 1. We crossed Islamorada, Marathon and all the other little keys along the road to Key West. We stopped along the road at the Bahia Honda State Park, taking advantage of the beautiful beaches there, lying under our beach umbrellas, reading, walking the beaches and spending time in the waters. The beaches at Bahia honda are somewhat famous, having won a best beach in the US award in the 1990s, so we expected alot, and it delivered. The best was Calusa beach, with its bright blue water, shallow entry beach, warm water and soft ... read more

Yesterday while spending some time snorkeling and hanging out with my two golden retrievers, I met some surveyors that were checking up on a turtle nest. Every morning some volunteers will cruise the beach and look for turtle tracks left behind by the females coming on shore to dig a hole and deposit 80 to 120 golf-ball size eggs. The nests will be marked and registered and 50 days later the hatch-lings will dig themselves out in a group effort and head out in the ocean. 3 days after the hatching the surveyors will come back and dig up the nest to count the empty shells, infertile eggs and maybe save some turtles that where left behind in the mass exodus. The nest we were checking out that day had 47 empty shells and 24 infertile ... read more

Ok this is my first Blog and to be honest I never even folowed one.. Not that I am not interested but mostly because I am so involved in my own adventures that I simply did not get the Idea to follow someone elses. I read a few entries here and there and found interesting facts and information. This blog will hopefully give you some usefull information as well but since it is mainly about my travels and experiences it might lack on hotel info flights and the nightlife actions of the common tourist. I don't view myself as one and my interests are mainly in nature and people that live close to nature and with it instead of against it. I avoid cities if possible and travel the back country roads and folow them to ... read more

I must admit that on the drive to Key West from Miami, I was a bit nervous. It was raining really hard and the forecast was calling for lots more. Having never driven the Overseas Highway before, I was worried it might get flooded and we'd get stuck. I also wasn't too thrilled by the prospect of spending two rainy days in Key West. I called our hotel and tried to change our reservations, but we couldn't and they said it was still sunny down there, so we went. The rain got a bit lighter the further south we went, and eventually stopped altogether. We stayed at the Doubletree Grand Key Resort. While a bit far from all the fun of Duval Street, there were free hourly shuttles downtown. Immediately upon arriving, we got on the ... read more

PhotoBike Tour 14: Key West Welcome to Key West! We spent a couple of days here with friends this past week, driving down Sunday with two and driving back up Wednesday with two others. It’s good that everyone drives! Bill was generous in offering to drag my bicycle down so that I could roam at will, and roam I did. We also did a lot of walking. Kirk took most of the foliage pictures; click on any of these to make them larger. Here’s my bike– the one with the white basket– fairly jumping off the rack to get started… img=http://jimmyboi2.fi... read more

Good Morning all – Just thought I’d write this (it may be my last missive) whilst we have all been confined to cabins because the ship’s on fire!!!!!! Always best to keep a sense of humour although I have registered my disappointment as the band is not playing! Joking apart we are instructed to stay in the cabins whilst a fire in an incinerator on deck 3 is being dealt with and all crew have their life jackets and special hats on and are standing at their muster stations. I was in the middle of playing bridge so a bit inconvenient!!! Just listening to the captain now who says fire is contained but we must still stay in our cabin. We left New Orleans last night after a really enjoyable couple of days – it’s a ... read more

Key West - Tuesday – March 13th Wow! Another busy day in Florida!! We had a good tour, but it was a very loooooong day. But we are glad to have seen Key West. The day started by us leaving our hotel at 5:45 AM to go to the pickup point and we got back to our room at 10:00 PM. That is why we did not publish anything yesterday. Now we are trying to catch up (being a day behind). We had previously found the hotel where we needed to meet the tour and we had found a 24-hr McDonalds for a drive-thru breakfast. We grabbed breakfast sandwiches (the hotel breakfast did not start until 6:30) and went to the Hilton for our pickup. We actually got there about 20 ... read more
