18:08 Local Time. I hope I can remember enough from day 1 to write it down. We actually made it out of the door on time. 5 minutes after midnight and we were already rolling after taking a few minutes in the Jeep to get everything situated for the drive. Nothing exceptional about the trip. Our place is only about 20 minutes from being on I95 at the south end of Jax. Had enough gas in the tank to make it to St Augustine. $50 later we had a full tank across the street from the outlet mall and were headed back out onto the road. Alot of 95 was blanketed in smoke. I have no idea what it was from. But it made driving a little more interesting. Part of me hoped there was some ... read more

Here we are at the end of our stay in Key West. It was very enjoyable and it is the top highlight of our trip so far: the houses, the roosters, the people, the marina with all kinds of boats, the cruise ships, and not to forget the famous sunsets with amateur artists performing. The bikes were at work here and what a way to explore all its little corners. The weather was more than perfect with abundant sunshine and warm temperatures so all this made it unforgettable. For almost a week, our daughter Christine, grandchildren Sebastian and Victoria were with us to discover Key West and I had the pleasure of going sea fishing with Seb and we formed a great duo while the ladies including Miss Bizz went shopping on Duval St. We also ... read more

Key West story 26 Feb. (on a Greyhound going N from Miami – no wifi) After my previous “what I hate about Miami” blog I was wondering what I was going to say about going to Key West (KW). I arrived in KW and fired up the wifi (as modern travellers do) to find an email from friend Andrew to the effect of “don’t bother – likely worst tourist disappointment of my life”. Well, there’s a challenge to be met – make it better (but not worse) than Andrew! So Andrew if you are reading this – shame! I do not know the full circumstances of his stay there so can only comment on my own obviously. I almost did not go at all – it’s a 4 ¼ hr bus trip from Miami and I ... read more

So......here is where it begins. We set out on a spontaneous trip to Key West. Drove all night and watched the sun come up over Key West. It was beautiful. You gotta love the numerous roosters crowing on Key West in the dawn hour...... read more

Key West is very special with its narrow streets, historical houses with beautiful gardens, lots of vegetation, bars and art galleries. Bicycles, scooters and electric cars are the means of transportation. It is also a destination for cruise ships and the port can accommodate 3 at the same time. This means the population increases by 10-12,000 people at once. Key West ... read more

The drive to Key West was bee-u-tee-ful and I didn’t have to worry about getting lost because if a made a wrong turn in any direction I’d end up in the ocean (which, I’ll have you know, I did not). I didn’t really know what to expect from Key West, knowing very little about it before heading there, but dammity if it didn’t turn out to be an absolute pleasure. We were staying in the old town (which is absolutely the place to be). The old part of Key West ain’t huge and everything is flat so it’s easy walking everywhere. We checked off all the usual stuff (Duval Street, southernmost point, Fort Zachary Taylor State Park, Mallory Square, historic waterfront, marina, oldest house), but still there is stuff we didn’t get to…if I ever find ... read more

When we were getting ready to leave Chicago, I told Jan that I didn't care if we did anything down here except lay around and relax. Well, we're doing plenty of that! The weather has been better than the 10 day forecasts were saying last week at home. It was in the high 80's Friday when we arrived and Saturday through Monday it was in the low 80's and SUNNY each day. As much as I love winter snow and snowmobiling, the one thing I hate and I guess we all hate in the northern climes during the winter is the abundance of gray overcast days. The sunny clear weather is a tonic for the soul. The forecast for Tuesday was for a cool day, with a high of 71, so we decided that would be ... read more

We left Longboat Key a day late because of bad weather but this gave us an opportunity to meet again the McManus for lunch. Finally, on Tuesday, after the fog lifted a bit, we ... read more

We really enjoyed Key West despite wasting a little time looking for a pirate museum in the guide book that had moved to St Augustine. The harbor was fabulous and very dog friendly with one ice cream parlor allowing Casper into the ice cream parlor itself and several people bringing him water. We were also able to have him with us at lunch as long as we sat outside. Unfortunately I didn't get the chance to tour Truman's Little White House as it was closed when we got there and if I could do one thing over in Key West it would be to save the Harbor for after the museum as the stores and restaurants along the harbor stayed open long after 5 PM which was when the museums closed. That said it was still ... read more

Wednesday morning the wind was pretty strong and the skies overcast. We thought about begging off the trip to Key West, but finally decided to go. The bus trip down was fine, it got a little crowded the last few miles, but the scenery was quite pleasant. Our bus route ended at Searstown, so we did a little shopping and Sara called Annika, a Navy friend of Michael’s from Guam. She lives in Key West and had come up to visit while the whole family was down. Annika picked us up and took us to lunch on the waterfront, then drove us around some. She took us to the southernmost point, where we took a few pictures (actually the only pics we took in Key West.) She drove us down Duval Street then to her place ... read more
