I woke up at 7am, a little later than I wanted to, to prepare and get ready for a long day ahead at the Keys in Florida. I headed out to the store to get some sandwiches, orange juice and water - which were surprisingly cheap compared to the places we had been. It wasn't as warm as it was the day before and I felt that just wearing a t-shirt and swimming trunks was maybe a little inappropriate or too little. We left Miami at 8am and drove for 3 and a half hours down to the southern most point of Florida (and mainland USA). The drive was beautiful. After we passed the Everglades national park, where there are is supposedly crocodiles and other wildlife, we came to the tip of Florida and started to ... read more

Our final port of call was Key West – a lovely place that’s the southern most part of the States. As we were entering U.S. territory, the “aliens” had to go through customs again which seemed to me rather stupid, as we wouldn’t have been on the ship unless we’d gone through customs to begin with. Key West reminded me of New Orleans with its houses, very quaint with all their Christmas decorations still up and lovely weather. I could live in Key West, even though its quite a small island. I'd prebooked a bike tour for the morning, so purposely missed the pub crawl that was also organised for the group. I would liked to have gone to a few of these 4-5 pubs, but just couldn't handle a day of boozing again. Would you ... read more

Key West, FL is one of those pieces of the paradise on Earth. A few hours drive from Miami and honestly, is a great place. You have no idea of how many things you can do there untill you actually get there. I would recommend you to take a few days to explore and fall in love with the Keys. The history, the architecture, the rides, the glass bottom boat, the food (hummmmm... Margaritaville was delicious...), the unforgetable sunset... not to mention that you will be at the southermost point of the United States, just about 90 miles from Cuba. Well, let me tell you this: Key West is a great experience!... read more

Hello again from us on our Journey. Things are great, people are good and the weather is awesome. Mon- Nov 01, 2010 We are really starting to suck at sleeping in and so again we are up with the sun and after chatting until about 10:00 a.m with the other hostel guests in Charleston South Carolina, we packed up our gear and  headed towards Savannah Georgia.  We didn't have a long ride ahead of us so we kinda took our time and meandered through a couple of different towns. The sun was very toasty warm, and we wanted to enjoy the warmth so we decided to stop early for the day and just chill in the sun.  We found a cheap hotel, unloaded the gear, threw on swim suits, found the pool and parked our butts ... read more

As a semi spur of the moment decision, Matt and I headed off to Key West, FL this Labor Day weekend. I really cannot stress enough how much I love and appreciate having so many vacation destinations merely a hop, skip and jump away. We drove down Friday night and avoided much of the holiday traffic, only taking us 4 hours from West Palm. Unfortunately, we hit major slow downs and heavy rain on our voyage home Monday afternoon/evening. Regardless, this was by far one of our best trips yet (I feel like I say that about every trip. ;) ) Lodging: Through Hotels.com, we booked An Island Oasis Bed and Breakfast . We decided on this hotel mainly because of cost and location. We ended up paying around $470 after tax for 3 nights. Not ... read more

Here's the link to TWO blogs... ILLUSTRATED. The text below isn't illuystrated... http://www.JimmyBoi2.wordpress.com A Key West Treasure- The Albury House August 13, 2010 This is my favorite house in Key West. It had been in the Albury family since being built in the 1800s. The house’s last occupant, Bonnie Albury, died in 2007. I had the privilege of being glared at by her once while strolling past the house. The place is now up for sale… and needs a lot of work, most notably on the exterior. It needed attention when I first saw it in 1985, and it needs even more now. But it’s beautiful- its ancient Key West soul glows. I can’t get enough of this house… here are some shots from August 2010… And here’s a resident’s blog about Bonnie, and her life ... read more

Right before this last trip I got a call from my visa card people that there was suspicious activity. Indeed there was. Someone got a hold of some account of mine and ordered a bunch of stuff. So I canceled the card and they would send me a new one. However- when I got back back from this trip, the stuff that was ordered was mailed to my house! ACK! Someone hacked into something and just ordered a bunch of stuff. I'm not sure why either. They are just making me have to return everything (which is a pain) and they don't actually get anything... probably some punk teenager in Wyoming who is bored on summer vacation. Bummer. Anyway- my trip. This one was to move Aaron and Stefani to Big Pine Key for a year. ... read more

This last week has been fast and furious! We sailed into Key West, pulled into the marina, and then it was time to get to work. We had to organize and plan all the details for the last leg of our journey... which is how to get the boat from Key West to Kemah, TX? Our original plan was to sail up the west coast of Florida, over to New Orleans, and finally into Galveston Bay, stopping at a couple of great anchorages along the way. Which was a perfectly good idea... right?!?! But that all changed when the offshore drilling rig Deepwater Horizon exploded and created one of the worst oil spills in U.S. history right in our path. Obviously, we couldn't sail our boat thru the oil spill even if we wanted to. Not ... read more
