Day 11 May 14, 2013 When I woke up this morning I felt miserable. Between walking 789 miles wearing flip flops the previous hot, muggy day without drinking enough fluids and drinking a case or two of rum, I was sore from head to toe, a little nauseous, and freezing. I had some coffee, drank some water, took some Tylenol and went back to bed. After several hours I had recuperated enough to drive Chris to the airport so she could check in and print her boarding pass. Still felt like shit, and hadn’t eaten anything, but able to drive. Florida doesn’t require that you wear helmets on motorcycles. As I only have one helmet with me I let Chris wear it. Her head is more valuable than mine, and I tend to drive really, really ... read more

Day 10 May 13, 2013 Joe went fishing in the morning. Chris & I walked to Camiles restaurant for breakfast not too far from the southernmost buoy. I got another blister on the walk to the restaurant; these sandals are not working out for me. Breakfast was very good and reasonably priced. After breakfast we walked over to the southernmost buoy and took a picture. We walked back to the condo very, very slowly so I wouldn’t make the blister any worse. It was pretty hot and muggy so when we got back to the condo we relaxed and cooled off for a while. After my body temperature returned to something south of almost dead, we walked over to the Truman White House for the tour. I wore flip flops to avoid more blisters. It hurts ... read more

10/5/13 Florida City, Miami Well I had the best night’s sleep for a very long time! Today we decided not to go anywhere just to get sorted out and take it easy. So we started with a trip to Walmart (ha ha gotta love that place), Howard reckons we were there for 2 ½ hours but I’m sure he exaggerated! There are so many fascinating things to see in Walmart, clothes to try on, gallon containers of a hundred varieties of ice cream to be examined, cds to look through, weapons of every variety to be shocked by, all the different types of m&m’s to be surprised by and so the list goes on! After all that excitement it was back to the motel and two machine fulls of washing to do and finally I was ... read more

Day 9 May 12, 2013 Got up early because we had to be at the boat by 7 am. We had a little trouble finding the boat, but we got there in plenty of time. The weather was perfect – sunny, low 80’s, not much humidity, and mostly calm seas. The ride out was two and one-half hours. The boat was very comfortable and relatively new – only seven months old. They provided breakfast - hard boiled eggs ham, bagels, cereal, etc. not great but certainly good enough. The crew members were very friendly and helpful. They all seemed to enjoy what they were doing. During the ride they provided some history and described the islands we rode past. That’s when we learned that it is called the Dry Tortugas because there is no fresh water ... read more

Went to everglades yesterday, got back late, will post entry later I noticed I put day 7 as day 6 and left out the real day 6. I put all of the days in the right order and added the missing day. That's what happens when you post after drinking. Pictures - on the road, the days I did have time, I wasn't able to upload them. Here in Key west, I haven't had time (sober time anyway). I will try to upload pictures before I leave the Keys on Wednesday. Day 8 May 11, 2013 The car we rented was a convertible, so we rode up the keys to Everglades National Park with the top down. The temperature was low to mid 80’s and mostly sunny for most of the ride up the keys. After ... read more

Day 7 May 10, 2013 Chris and I rode the Motorcycle to the Publix grocery store on the top of the island to get groceries at a price that wouldn’t bankrupt us. We were limited by the amount of space on my motorcycle, but we managed to fit everything, including a case of beer for Joe, and a Styrofoam cooler, which Chris had to carry on her lap, what a sight. We had breakfast at La Creperie, not too pricy and the omelets were pretty good. After breakfast Joe rented a bicycle to go to the beach and Chris and I Walked 5 blocks to the Hemingway House for the tour. It was fascinating, Hemingway was quite a character. We went back to the condo to cool off (today it is really hot). Then Chris and ... read more

Day 6 May 9, 2013 Chris went on the internet and found a great place to eat breakfast called “the Deli” about six blocks away from where wee are staying. The menu looked good and the prices were surprisingly reasonable. The weather was perfect – mid 70’s light breeze, sunny skies, it doesn’t get much better than this. When we arrived at the restaurant we discovered that “The Deli” had metamorphed into “Better than Sex”. We couldn’t find out if it was indeed better than sex because it only serves desserts and didn’t open until 4 pm. This is yet another example that the internet is not to be taken at face value. We ended up eating at Denny’s because it was nearby and we were hungry. After breakfast Chris & I decided to take ... read more

Day 5 Got up really, really early because I fell asleep really, really early so I decided to get an early, early start. I left the hotel and went searching for a car wash so I could remove the fifteen million bugs that decided to die on my windshield. When I was able to see again, I continued onto journey to Key West. The weather was beautiful and traffic was very light. I stopped for gas outside of Palm Beach and saw a perfectly still lake with lots of reeds that would have been a great picture, but there was no place to pull over. I was very disappointed. The ride through southern Florida was mostly non-eventful, except that I almost got caught in a speed trap outside Miami. Floridians drive much like we do ... read more

My first week in Islamorada was coming to a close. The sun had set and the dusk was dwindling. The only thing on the agenda was laundry and reading. I was not super excited about that. So, I decided it was time to venture out on my own again, even if just for a day. Sunday night I packed up my little old car and headed to Key West. Key West is the last island in the Florida Keys. To get there I would have to continue driving on the one-lane no passing road for two hours, crossing over dozens of other islands, through a protected deer area and over the seven-mile bridge. I sent out a few Couch Surfing requests. For those who don’t know, Couch Surfing is an online network of people willing to ... read more

I WAS INTRIGUED BY THE IDEA OF A DAY TRIP TO KEY WEST ON THE KEY WEST EXPRESS FROM FORT MEYERS BEACH TO KEY WEST AND RETURN INSTEAD OF DRIVING THERE (A TRIP THAT TAKES A FULL DAY EACH WAY). SO I TRIED IT OUT ON DECEMBER 18. THE BOAT STARTED BOARDING AT 7:00 AM, SO I LEFT FROM SARASOTA AT 5:30 TO DRIVE TO FMB. THE BOARDING WENT SMOOTHLY AND WE LEFT THE DOCK A LITTLE LATE FOR SOME UNKNOWN REASON. THE HYDROFOIL MOVED VERY SMOOTHLY (THE GULF WAS VERY SMOOTH THAT DAY) AND QUICKLY (ABOUT 40 MPH) FOR THE 3 1/2 HR TRIP. SEVERAL DOLPHINS PLAYED IN THE WAKE AS WE LEFT FMB. A SNACK BAR WITH GOOD COFFEE, PASTRIES AND BREAKFAST SANDWICHES WAS REASONABLY PRICED AND GOOD. THEY ALSO HAD HOT DOGS, HAMBURGERS ... read more
