So this week, I am at the RTM Star Centre for Maritime Officers in Dania Beach, Florida. I am being sent here by Carnival to get my Simulation, Training, Assessor, and Research Certification. This program is all about Adult Education, Course Development/Design and some Maritime Legal proceedings. When I found out I would be coming to Star Centre I was very surprised and excited. I have heard about this place from everyone that works on the ships, and especially in my department. Not everyone is selected to go to this place so it holds a little prestige for me, which I like too. So I needed to get on a flight from Tampa, after the relocation and head back to Ft. Lauderdale. Which seemed odd because I came from Ft. Lauderdale in the first place. ... read more

Exchange Student/Daughter Reunion - Miami, Florida, April 2007 We thought we’d use this blog forum to share a summary and photos of our dear foreign daughters with you. As most of you know, we had 5 exchange students live with us in Alaska. Our first was Victoria Sahade (Argentina), who was a Rotary Exchange Student in 1987-88. We say she paved the way for the other four because she was such an exemplary student/roommate. The other four were with us from 1990 - 1992. While traveling in South America in 1988 - 1989 we first met Jaqueline in Guatemala where we were staying for 3 months to learn Spanish. We were traveling together on a bus - for those of you who know Guatemala, you know that they often sit 3 adults to what would be ... read more

MONDAY 9 APRIL We woke up to another glorious day. So far, I've been extraordinarily lucky in the weather on this trip -- bright sunshine, but not too hot. The color is beginning to come into my face and I am losing that lovely "winter in England" hue that is so attractive. Today was the day that we had set aside to go fishing. Before we left, Eileen and I decided that we would take subs with us to eat for lunch. We walked into an Italian sub shop and, all of a sudden, I was homesick. That smell, of fresh meat, oregano and olive oil, must be one of the most evocative smells ever. And I must say, the sub tasted just as good! Steve, Eileen, Dominic, three more of their friends and I all ... read more

FRIDAY 6 APRIL Why Changes in Latitude? My favourite recording artist of all time is Jimmy Buffet -- he of Key West fame (get it?). My favourite of his songs -- and arguably my favourite song of all time -- is called Changes in Latitude Changes in Attitude. If you don't know it, download it. If it doesn't make you think of me, you don't know me very well! So -- here we go! After a month of planning and driving my travel agent, Bianca, crazy, I am off for two weeks and two days to the States. The timing this year was great. Easter with Eileen, celebrating Kate's big birthday with her and attending Laura's Spring Fling for the first time in a few years. Let me just start by saying two things. First -- ... read more

Parties, wet T-Shirt contests, swimming, dancing, drinking and girls gone wild: O shucks, I went to Ft. Lauderdale the wrong time of year. What I found was a nice, clean old motel for a reasonable price. Sort of a laid back community with inviting little stores. It is also a biker's dream. So I got a lot of biking in at Ft Lauderdale. Ft Lauderdale is only an hour drive from the Port of Miami where our cruise ship was located. We liked our place so much we reserved a room for the day after our cruise. The model owner was kind enough to keep my bike so I didn't have to take a chance taking it to the ship's car storage and getting ripped off.... read more

I've started a blog to record our upcoming bike trip, from South Florida to Washington State to Canada, and then back. I'm at a loss in trying to determine which blog site to use. The blog recently started, www.terryandmikesgreatadventure.blogspot.com is easy to use and seems to be integrated with Google, yet, then I find travelblog. Dear reader, if you find this entry, please let me know which blog site should be the posting site for our trip. thanks, Mike... read more

I’ve made it this far, I might as well continue. Today marked the beginning of the second half of the trip. I’m doing a lot better from the start of the trip when I wanted to go home and cry like a baby. How sad would that have been - I wouldn’t even enjoy Las Vegas, let alone the other 300 great things I have done on this trip thus far! Another great thing to add to the list was to check out Fort Lauderdale’s Museum of Science and Discovery, only after posting a few excess things gained on my trip and some clothes that I no longer needed (and they were clean too, how sweet of me!) Today the humidity was at its extreme so I did well by bringing a change of clothes ... read more
