Colleen, Dave and I went for a week vacation down in Florida. I was ready for some fun and sun! Using Dave's fabulous Wyndham employee discount, we were able to stay at a 2 bedroom condo in Pompano Beach, which is just north of Fort Lauderdale, for an amazing price. The condo was part of a resort, with four pools, four whirlpools, volleyball courts, mini-golf, and a spa. While the early 90's decor in the condo left something to be desired, it was large and definitely perfect for our week away! We had a fun week- One night, we ventured across the street from our condo, where The Isle Casino and Racing Park at Pompano Beach is, and we played some slots - no big winners for us, unfortunately!!! One day, we went to the Everglades- ... read more

Welcome to America! How could i ever forget what country i was in when every corner i turn down there is another american flag waving proudly from a shop front. From my limited experience people have been very polite, i've already met some really nice people and everyone here seems to love a yarn. Had a chat to a local surf dog, an older chap named joe (every second dude is named joe) down at the beach the other day, ended up being a 2 and a half hour INTENSE convo about sub atomic particles and the meaning of life. As the rain fell and we sat under the shelter in the tropical heat joe signed off with " You see Johnny, these people are searching for something made of stone to fufil their lives" he ... read more

We left the quiet comfort of Port St. Lucie this afternoon for Fort Lauderdale. Not daring to risk missing the rendezvous with my group tomorrow, I'm inn for the night at a Sleep Inn by the airport. I'll hook up with 21 of my new best friends at 10:30 in the morning for Countdown PR: The Passions of Puerto Rico. My Mission, as directed by Sport Diver magazine: "Live the dream. Discover what it's really like to go on assignment with Sport Diver magazine as we explore the Passions of Puerto Rico: diving, cultural heritage, natural heritage, music and food. And go with the people that make it happen every month. We're heading to the most diverse and culturally rich island in the Caribbean, Puerto Rico and we're bringing our favorite people--our readers! We checked out of our hotel this morning and decided to head a bit further south along the Keys, stopping first to take a few pictures of the gorgeous water and then at Robbie’s Marina. You can pay to feed the Tarpon fish there…however, the smell alone was enough to deter me from wanting to go through with it (that and the large crowd of people already out on the dock). We decided instead to eat breakfast at The Hungry Tarpon, located in the front of the marina. It’s a local diner, the kind of place where everyone knows everyone else and the conversations are fun to eavesdrop on (the guy behind us was telling everyone how he’d consumed far too much whisky the night before). I had “The Gooey”, a French toast peanut butter and ... read more

Spring is here....la, la, la which means its time for the annual Spring trip. I'll be going again with my friend Dick Burns (we did the Atlantic crossing on PRINSENDAM, then Lisbon last May), I really thought I'd skip it this year seeing as I was on QE2 in January, but the price offered by Princess Cruises for 15 days from Ft. Lauderdale to Copenhagen was simply too good to pass up. We leave from Ft. Lauderdale on 05 May aboard CROWN PRINCESS. With some 3,000 passengers, it is a much larger ship than I would like, but everyone assures me that once embark and lifeboat drill are finished, it will never seem like that many people are aboard. We'll stop at Ponta Delgada in the Azores, Lisbon, Vigo in Spain, Southampton (not to worry, Stuart....I ... read more

Fort Lauderdale, United States Friday, March 7th, 2008 Our Taxi took us to the Sheraton Yankee Clipper; which is around 2km south of the main area of Fort Lauderdale beach. As it was so early, our room was not ready, so we asked for directions to a deli. We could not it though, so walking along the road a bus pulled up, and we jumped on. Paul asked where we could go to eat, and we ended up at Denny’s. After picking our rental car from Thrifty, we drove back to the hotel, but our room was still not ready. The combination lock on Jeff’s suitcase would not open, so we took it to a nearby luggage repairer, and he managed to fix it in a few minutes. We then decided that we might as well ... read more

How can a trip that started out so great end so crazy? I refuse to use the word BAD because Mel and I do seem to find the humor in most stuff and work through any rough patches. See, Mel & I are actually a lot alike in the sense that we are both sensitive, worry excessively and fight like Italian cocks (listen, I can't stop saying that word - blame Key West). However, I beat Mel because I also have an anxiety disorder added to the mix and I am a crazed Gemini. Mel is more logical and fact based and most times calming. Where do I begin? Sunday started out with me feeling (que the soap opera dramatic music) - SICK!!! :( For the love of grilled chicken and Cuban fly pie. I couldn't ... read more

And so my time on the Carnival Destiny has come to an end. The day after my birthday and all of the (bittersweet) fun, I had to leave to transfer ships. My last night on the ship was spent mostly getting organized to go, or hanging out with Jody while he got organized to go home. I went up to the crew bar for a bit. Final hugs and goodbyes to friends. I hate saying them! So many people here I'd like to just hang onto . . . Jody. Lonnel. Shale. Marc. Jacques. Duncan. Justine. George. Larry. Yetro . . . I could go on . . . I hate the open-ended goodbyes of ships, where you just don't know if you'll ever see these people again. And you know that you as a group ... read more

Wow, day one of our escape to Florida and already so much has happened. Prior to arriving here in gorgeous Fort Lauderdale there had been lesbian drama, a mad rush to fix my disheveled hair, word that "Annabelle the Cow" from Jock’s Farm (Where Mel's horse shacks up) was sold to the milk factory, the cleansing of the deadly cat litter, the realization that Melanie has an otherworldly head cold (and that I am 14.3 minutes away from catching it full blown), a quick dinner with the mamas (who found part of a fossilized turkey breast in their sandwich), a trek from the “economy car parking lot” at Logan Airport in Boston in white linen pants, a navy blue polo and not much else, in a temp hovering around 20 degrees, the realization that Mel has ... read more
