Bodyguard service begins today. We are in Ft. Lauderdale where we are boarding Regent (used to be Radisson) Seven Seas Mariner for a cruise through the Panama Canal. This time, we’ll be viewing cruise travel through the eyes of an 88-year old. We are escorting Alan’s mother, Kathryn, (we call ourselves “the bodyguards”) on a trip she could not take alone. We arrived in Ft. Lauderdale, yesterday, severely sleep deprived from the change to Daylight Savings and switching time zones. Waking up at 3:30am on Sunday to drive to LAX didn’t help any. At the airport, we took advantage of sidewalk check-in. A wheelchair was ordered for Kathryn and I assumed bodyguard duty through airport security while Alan returned our rental car. The wheelchair meant an escort for us through security and to the gate, the ... read more

Standing outside the only bar crazy enough to stay open during a hurricane, beer in hand fighting the 130 km/hr winds blowing sand, rain and trees, right on da beach! Then back to the hostel for beers, drinking games, wet as and no power! I planned to stay 1 night in Fort Lauderdale but ended up staying a week! On the bus from Key west I met Forest from Texas and he planned on going back home to Houston but decided to stay, so we went to the hostel. ( which was a pretty sweet hostel) There was a heap a girls from camp Chipinaw (Rach's & Allies camp) stayin as well (aussies, kiwis & poms). Barby's by the pool, out on the town partyin every night, a tone of fun, sup gals good times, I ... read more

So here I am, getting ready to leave my life behind for a month and a half as I venture into the unknown. Well for me, anyway.... people have been there before I'm pretty sure. Madrid, Espana will be my destination for more than a month, and I'm both excited and nervous at the same time. I'm not really sure what to expect at all; I've been wanting to do this for so long that I'm not even sure why it was I wanted to go in the first place. I'm hoping for something enlightening; for a greater directive to somehow become clear to me from which I can propell myself forward. I've ran the gamut of emotions in my current state. Scenarios have played out in my head a million times, and now the only ... read more

Friday 27th May 2005 : Bye Bye Bogota - Hello Florida To the ATM for cash. To the café for caffeine. I thought that by now I could order coffee but no. I ask for a ‘tinto’ (black) and pay , then present my receipt at the coffee counter. The young lady asks me how much water do I want but not in a way that I understand. A fellow customer explains. I say I’d like more water and learn that this is a ‘clarito’ (but is this only in Bogota ?). The kids are still filling the hostel and a bunch of adults arrive to check in. This is as busy as we’ve seen it. We check out and immediately flag down a taxi on the street. Check in and have to pay 30USD departure ... read more

January 13, 2005, Thursday. We drove a “Bob road” all day, the Scenic and Historic Coastal Byway A1A this follows the coastline, for the most part. In St. Augustine, we looked for the Fountain of Youth, but alas no luck. It was a warm beautiful day as we drove along the beaches and observed obvious hurricane damage. The day ended in Titusville just outside Canaveral. The campground had a wireless connection to the internet, this was a great find. When traveling one can just sit at a picnic table and connect! January 14, 2005, Friday. Being this close to Kennedy Space Center (KSC) we thought we would take a visit. Our impressions were probably based on several factors: 1.) Neither of us is a follower of space travel; 2.) A weather front came through and dumped ... read more
