Nessy woke me up when she rang, I told her I’d ring her later on while I went back to sleep. 2 and a half hours later and I probably rang up and by jove, it was 11.30am! What a big boozy weekend! I decided I wouldn’t check out Fort Lauderdale yet but instead I decided I would go on my morning walk north along A1A. I’ve got Vanilla Ice’s Ice Ice Baby ringing through my head, especially the lyric, ‘A1A - BEACH FRONT AVENUE!’ I didn’t see Vanilla Ice here, nor do I feel ice cold at all. The humidity here had me feeling like it was a lot hotter than it should feel. I am sweating buckets and I am only 5 blocks away from where the hostel is. Not only was it getting ... read more

I’m sorry, Readers. I just wasn’t up to writing anything yesterday or last night. Its past midnight and I’ve just gotten into Fort Lauderdale. The plane flight had me sleeping, even with a little girl in the aisle down from me singing Itsy Bitsy Spider all flight long. Earlier, I had to check out of the Americana as Brooke’s Contiki bus was leaving at 10.30am. I really didn’t have any other business hanging around. Later on, I was at Las Vegas’ airport and I wanted to check in but I had to wait until midday before I could do anything with my bags. Once in I found the lounge and tried to sleep, but couldn’t. I rang my Dad back home and he was happy to hear from me, since I tried on Friday night and ... read more

Ft Lauderdale - Over tanned and overweight Maybe not as catchy as something like 'The Sunshine State' but I think it would be a more accurate description of Florida's charms. I was lucky enough to score a week in Florida with Kristen after leaving Banff. Her Mum has a timeshare and Kris invited me along with her brother, James and his gf Jo. So 1 cheap airfare later and Kris and I were on the plane from Buffalo, USA (Seventh Heaven fans may remember this is where the wayward Mary Campden aka Jessica Biel got sent) airport to Ft Lauderdale. Florida is ... hot! I know as an Australian I shouldnt complain about such things but there is a huge difference between our dry heat and the balmy, unrelenting humidity of Florida. Me in my naievity ... read more

Everyone has the opportunity to "unsubscribe" if you get tired of reading these blogs!!!!! The big news is that the entire journey on QUEEN MARY 2 has been cancelled for reasons beyond my control. The last third, however remains as scheduled so on 17 August, I fly up to Massachusetts to spend 12 days with the parents. The cost of driving up there and back is out of hand, so for less than the cost of driving back, I'm going to take Amtrack!!!! Taking the train from Providence to NYC, then finding my little private roomette for the 27 hour (thats if they run ... read more

This is to all of you solo, or rather potential solo, travelers planning and gearing up for your own expedition of choice. I know that you have been talking your friend's ears off about all the amazing places you will be going and all the strange and interesting things you will be doing. I also know that you have been trying to get at least one of your friends to understand what you see ahead and decide to come along. I'm sure that you have finally come to terms with the fact that you will be doing this expedition alone and have been amply preparing. I have been planning my expedition for the last eight months. During the first 4 to 5 I tried as hard as I could to get a fellow traveler. It didn't ... read more

It is a strange feeling knowing that I will be leaving in less than two weeks. I don't feel like it. I just don't think I can even begin to grasp what the next three months will be like. All I know is that it should be one of the most amazing experiences of my life. No matter how much you read nothing can really prepare you for what you will find when you actually get to the other side of the world. Well, only one way to find out... ... read more

Well, I've started to get ready for this years "big trip". It will start in less than 2 weeks and I'll be gone for a month. In some respects, this years trip is not going to be as exotic as the last couple years, but it does promise to be very interesting. I always give my trips a name, so this year the name is "IN SEARCH OF DRACULA". Why? Because I'm going to Transylvania!! Yup....Romania, Bulgaria, Croatia, and Hungary. After 4 days in Transylvania I get on a river cruise ship and sail from the Black Sea up the Danube to Budapest, Hungary. Not alone....with my brother, 6 good friends and some 150 other folks on the boat. When they all disembark to fly back to the USA, I'm going on to Bratislava, the capital ... read more
