Having lived in Florida for nearly 18 months now we decided that it was time we should visit one of it's major attractions - The Kennedy Space Centre. Although we've told all our visitors to go there, and have been down there to see a launch, Fi and I just hadn't managed to get down there some how...... The Space Centre is about 2 hours south of Jacksonville and a little under and hour east of Orlando, so to make the most of our trip we decided to head down to Orlando on Saturday, stay the night and then jump across to Cape Canaveral early on Sunday morning.....but what to do during our spare time in Orlando?? It took Fiona about half a second to come up with an idea....SHOPPING. Orlando is a shopper-holics paradise....big complexes ... read more

Greetings from Titusville, FL. Where has the month of January gone? My goodness what a whirlwind trip this has been. I’ve packed a lot into the first days of 2008. The campground here is great. It is County run, has lots of shade, and if the shuttle was going to launch while I was here, I would have a great view of it (of course I’d need that 500 mm lens that I don’t have to get anything remotely close up). The photo workshop was good, in spite of less than spectacular weather. When I joined up with them Saturday afternoon, I discovered 2 people from my workshop in Bosque were also here. It was fun shooting with them again. This morning, while we were in Merritt Island NWR, I saw another familiar face. One of ... read more

Obfuscator writes: We got up pretty early, anticipating heavy traffic to the Kennedy Space Center. As it happened, there really wasn't bad traffic at all, and we got there in an hour, about the same time that we had taken getting from there the night before. Since we got there so fast, we got a great parking spot right up by the front of the lot, just a few paces from the entrance. We had about a half hour to kill before they opened the gates, and we weren't in too much of a hurry to stand in line, since there weren't too many crowds pressing at the gates or anything. At the front of the Visitor's Complex, we could see some big boosters, so we figured we'd walk around to take some pictures. That's when ... read more

We all have dreams, dreams that sometimes come from our early childhood. And man has always had a dream ...to fly...today, I may be one of the very few thousands on earth that have realized his dream. I can say too...I can fly...so today was one of the most incredible day of my life. So for this, fly first...on a traditional way to Orlando. And really happy to see again my great friend Tim...thanks for your welcome Tim! So on this 24th...wake up very early to drive to Cape Canaveral! Yes, our plane did take off and land on the runway used by the space shuttle...walking on the same ground as the astronauts are using for their first steps back to earth! We started with a light breakfast, and a full presentation on what was ... read more

We spent the last week at the Ron Jon Resort in Cape Canaveral, which is near Cocoa Beach and Kennedy Space Center. World famous Ron Jon Surf Shop has a resort and it's nicely set up for a family to relax on and near the beach. Although the Resort is advertised as beach front, the main building is a short walk from the beach. They get away with calling it beach front because they have a second (smaller) building closer to the beach. The main attraction of the Resort is the large pool area that features a water slide, lazy river, and seperate large pool to satisfy anyone's preference while soaking up the sun's rays and keeping cool. There is a pool side bar and grill that is perfect for ordering food and drinks while ... read more

We enjoyed the tiny, funky old Cocoa village. Found good on-street parking - very useful signage, great local artists' studios and galleries, charming boutiques, and home made ice cream. A few unusual things happened today - the artist in one of the studios lived in Schenectady as a child (unfortunately he wasn't in his gallery today), the driver from Hertz who took us back to The Schooner after we left off the rental car had a mutual friend (relative) in Saratoga, and an odd little contingent from the RV Park paraded around in wierd costumes dispensing ashes (from a burnt cork in some sort of a local (secular) Ash Wednesday ritual. Our Mardi Gras celebration included a great sunset from Sunset Waterfront Grill, Cocoa Beach. Stay tuned for Orlando and Ocala; then it's home on Feb. ... read more

The Schooner is "docked" at Forest Village RV Park near Cocoa Beach. We met the Vanderwerkers and Tom and Cheryl Rimmer and had a great seafood meal at Grills Seafood Deck at Sunrise Marina, Port Canaveral. Drinks and snacks prior at Joe and LJ's condo at Cape Canaveral Beach. Great spot. The Rimmers are on to St. Thomas VI in the morning where they will be sailing with friends for a week or so - can hardly wait to hear about their adventure. It is something we would LOVE to do. On Friday we drove to a very colorful, vintage Pier in Cocoa Beach. The sand near the water's edge is very firm and good for walking. We spotted the rocket that NASA was to launch that night from the pier. Then on to Jetty Park, ... read more

This was my first trip to florida and i was very impressed with the beauty of this state. We landed in Orlando and rented a car to drive to Cape Canaveral where my cruize would be leaving out of. Be careful driving on the 95 i belive it was because cops sit there and wait for dumb tourists to speed by them e.g. such as us. He luckily let us go with a warning just obey the speed laws. The following day we took the car north along the coast route 1 which is similiar to California's 1 Pacific coast highway. It was a very scenic road and so green. There were huge trees on either side of us the center divider was all nice lush green grass as well as the sides of the road. ... read more
