We were flying home from Florida on Monday May 11, 2009. We high above the clouds around 2 PM when the pilot announced that the Shuttle had just taken off from Cape Canaveral and we could see it from the right side of the plane. We were sitting on the right side and looked out to see the hugh white plume and at the end of the plume was the shuttle. We saw it and its bright orange/red engine flame. What a sight! I think we were the only plane in the area, at least I did not see any others. This may be the last shuttle flight and seeing the launch from 30,000 or so feet was a thrill.... read more

Today I drove to The Kennedy Space Centre (NASA), which was about 50 miles away. A lot of the main roads charge tolls, most of them are only about 75c, but there are so many of them that it soon builds up. The Kennedy Space Centre was GREAT!!!!! I went on a Shuttle Simulator, which was fun, and saw lots of Rockets and Shuttles which have already been to space and back, amazing. ‘Lunch With An Astronaught’ was very interesting. We had a buffet (included in ticket price) in a large dining hall and John McBride from ‘Apollo 9’ spoke about his experience as the last person to walk on the moon. The next trip to the moon is planned for 2020 with a trip to Mars in 2030. The ‘Up Close Tour’ took us on ... read more

Day 13 - Friday, January 16th - Kennedy Space Center, FL What a great day in spite of the chill in the air. We toured the Kennedy Space Center facility and then caught the bus to take the tour of the LC 39 Observation Gantry, and the Apollo/Saturn V Center, and the International Space Center. In the end, we only did the LC39 Observation Gantry and the Apollo/Saturn V Center. The wind blew away our interest after the first two stops. Jerry was quite chilled and there was so much yet to see at the Space Center area. We recommend the bus tour to anyone going and further recommend you leave plenty of time - a few hours at least - in order to thoroughly appreciate the various information points at the three areas. It is ... read more

Miami - Orlando Tuesday 7th October (Day 43) Today we were checking out and heading for Orlando, so we stopped for one last time at Walgreen’s. It had certainly been helpful for cold drinks and decent snacks (and awesome air conditioning) during our stay in South Beach. We picked up some fresh fruit salad and other items for breakfast, and ate them on the way to the Everglades National Park, which we had decided to detour to. We headed west for a while and blasted down freeways and past everglades and swap areas - I felt bad that we were using the very roads that were contributing to the degradation of the everglades, but didn’t really see much of an alternative since we were already on our way. We drove for about 45 minutes and found ... read more

Aujourd'hui, nous avons loué une voiture et sommes allés visiter le centre spatial Kennedy. C'était très intéressant et beaucoup plus grand que je ne le croyais. Nous avons vu quelques crocodiles sur le bord de la route.... read more

Last week Steph, Nicole, Katelyn, and I were able to take advantage of a crew shore excursion that was being offered to the Kennedy Space Centre. For $15, we had transportation, passes into the centre, tours around the centre, and things like the shuttle launch experience and the IMAX film. What a fun day we had. We were driven out near the launch pad where the actual NASA launches take place. Along the way we saw lots of alligators, as the Kennedy Space Centre is also a nature reserve and houses many different animals, including lots of Florida gators! It was amazing to tour around and see real rockets. It’s hard to truly appreciate the size and complexity of these giant structures we were surrounded by. We watched the IMAX video and tried to fathom ... read more

We drove from Orlando to the Kennedy Space Centre, which was a bit tricky on the wrong side of the road, but we made it ok. We did a special 'NASA up close' tour, which was different from the normal tour in that it took us slightly closer to the shuttle launch pads. And showed us the Vehicle Assembly Building (which is just a building). And showed us the landing runway (which is just a runway). But seeing the launch pads was very cool, especially as Endeavour was sitting on one of them awaiting its launch on Friday. The tour ended at the Apollo/Saturn V display, where an actual (so they said) Apollo rocket is on display. It is unbelievably big. And complicated. We also saw the 'clean room' where modules for the International Space Station ... read more

Here we are sitting in beautiful Cape Canaveral Fl. The drive down was great! After making this trip 5 times the sites are all familiar. The bridge near Jacksonville always amazes. We talk and enjoy each others company the entire trip. With 5 kids between us we have a lot to talk about. We don’t even turn on the radio. We chose to take advantage of Country Inn & Suites “Park and Cruise” program. We pay one hotel fee ($159) and we can leave our car here for the duration of the cruise. They also provide a free continental breakfast which is not bad. The hotel shuttles everyone to the port which is across the street. These types of programs seem to be pretty common here. We received word on Friday 10-31 that the Carnival Glory ... read more
