That was the title of the IMAX movie I saw at NASA Kennedy Space Center today. It was utterly incredible - sent shivers down my spine. It was like actually being there, in that 3d world of dust! Although I was initially underwhelmed by the sheer mundaneness of the complex and the godawful muzak pumping out everywhere - as if we needed that to emote about space! - I soon found myself impressed by the Rocket Garden (all the Mercury and other rockets set side by side) and then, on the bus tour, blinking back tears at the sight of the Vehicle Assembly Building! (I know I'm odd!) Although we didn't get to go in there or close enough to the launch pads - I'm hoping for a more detailed tour tomorrow when I do my ... read more

Today the sun had his baseball cap on (well, we are in the US) so I took a long, long walk. Everything here is set up for four-wheeled creatures, so all amenities are sprawled miles apart - hence there is no choice for two-legged animals like me except to perform the Long March. In fact, I feel so odd here without a car, that I find myself telling people about my sad epileptic past in order to somehow excuse my non-driver status! This state will be the first to go when fossil fuels run out! Anyway, I trudged to the Taco Bell (sadly, about the best place for a veggie lunch here) and then along the beach to the Pier. The sands were shimmering with the lapping water and birds of all sorts were diving around ... read more

Well, that's what one of the church billboards here in Cocoa Beach told me!! This place is uber-weird! With its luscious vegetation and outrageous wildlife - I've seen so many eagles! - I have the feeling the Florida would be beautiful, if only humans hadn't come along and screwed it up! It makes me think of that Talking Head song which says "Once there were parking lots/ Now there's nothing but flowers" ... I wish. Cocoa Beach itself is long and lovely - only it's pretty cool today and overcast so the swimming and lazing I'd planned for the next couple of days is off the menu. But then there's a long, noble tradition in my family of foul-weathered on holidays. Take the notorious summer of 1976 - we went away just before the sun came. ... read more

I decided to spend the night at Sebastian Inlet State Park a little ways south of Cocoa Beach. This coast line is very cool and some high end subdivisions are in this area. I suspect this is true anywhere along the coast in Florida and there is a lot of Coast. I suspect a lot of these homes are second homes. Made it to Sebastian Inlet State Park around 6:00 and they were full. They offered me a couple other campground options, which included parking in their lot for $13. This seemed pricey to me for a parking spot. I took several sunset photos. It was cool seeing the tide rush out of the inlet and into the Atlantic Ocean as the time was trending towards low-tide. There were lots of fisherman in this area. I ... read more

Just after settling in some members of the Australian Embassy arrived in Jacksonville as part of their national tour visiting all the Australian Defence Members. There are three Australian families here and we all had dinner at the Harris Household. Jason Harris is a navy chief who also works at Mayport Naval Station with Fiona. The other Australian (James and his wife Leanne) is an airforce Navigator who works at Naval Air Station Jacksonville. We had an interesting dinner and discussed the forthcoming NASA shuttle launch which was scheduled to be the first night launch. The embassy staff made quick changes to their plan and decided to drive down and watch the lauch. The next night Fi and I jumped in the cruiser and headed down to Cape Canaveral where the Kennedy Space Centre is located. ... read more

I am not much interested in Space. However, you would have to be lax not to be grateful for the benefits it creates, the courage of our Astronauts and the international cooperation involved in this endeavor. As we headed south on Hwy. 95 I just couldn’t see driving by one of the greatest achievements of man. The Space Center is sit up for visitors. They have capable tour guides who drive a bus and talk on a loudspeaker at the same time. All this cost plenty. Linda and I paid almost 80 dollars for the whole tour. The best part of the whole tour was the IMAX Theater. It was in 3 D and it made you feel like you were in the spaceship with the astronauts. I could say that this made the whole tour ... read more

Orlando-Port Canaveral We arrived in Orlando in the morning. At the airport, we found a taxi van to take us to Port Canaveral. We were originally going to walk around Cape Canaveral, since it was too early to board the ship, but since we were so tired, we decided to just go straight to the port. We were so glad that we did, becuase we ended up being able to board almost immediately, and since it was so early, there were very few people on the ship. We were able to get familiar with the ship without having hoards of people around, and we took some cool pictures of the ship without having a bunch of people in our shot. One feature we found right away, is that the day of the week is listed on ... read more
