Tired of sitting around waiting to be shuttled to the ship we decided to venture out and see a little bit of Cocoa Beach and area. Humming the theme to “I dream of Jennie” we jumped in the Audi and off we went. First on the agenda was food. After driving down the main strip for 3-4 miles we found a nice steak house called Durango’s Steakhouse. I ordered a 12oz rib eye steak and my bride ordered chipotle shrimp. We split an appetizer of queso w/ homemade chips. All was awesome! The steaks and other fare were cooked over a huge open flame over oak coals. I wondered if the cook had eyebrows or nose hair for that matter. The place was decorated in dark wood like the old time steakhouses and smelled of charred ... read more

Hello! Sorry I've been a bit slow with updating the blog. I did actually do more in Florida than go fishing but not much! I was haivng too much fun just kicking back by the pool and spa. Then the weather went a little bad but there were some spectacular thunderstorms. So pretty much I lived in the unit and and the pool for a week. When I did eventually get up and about I only had one day left! But at least it only cost me one day to hire a car, because nothing is close. Within the first hour of being in Florida I saw my first Gator! Apparently they are extremely common. But I went on an airboat tour specifically to see them and all I saw was a baby and another in ... read more

I have just caught the biggest fish of my life! Today I went out fishing from Cape Canaveral in Florida and boy did I have a grin on my face as we were coming back into port. All up we only fished for about 3 hours and I only caught 4-5 fish and only kept evidence of one (well technically 2). All my other fish were little black tip sharks (and what most of the others on the boat caught as you can see by the photos). Finally I broke the mould and caught an undersize black Sea Bass. Ryan the deckie got all excited and asked me if I wanted to catch the barracuda which was hanging around the boat and kept pinching our fish as we were reeling them in and everyone was cursing ... read more

For one day, we had a break from all the Disney parks and we drove to the Kennedy Space Center. The first stop was the Visitors Complex, which was a lot more than just the usual tourist information office. There is a full scale mock-up of the Space Shuttle, with an Orbiter and then alongside are an external fuel-tank and the booster rockets. One thing I never realised is that craft that everyone calls the Space Shuttle was actually called an orbiter – it is the complete assembly that is know as the Space Shuttle. There is also the Rocket Garden, where there are full-size mock-ups of many of the various rockets that have been used over the years. There is a Space Shuttle Launch simulator, which simulates the forces of a take-off. It was very ... read more

Our morning started out at Sunrise Diner, where we collected our free breakfast courtesty of the Luna Sea Motel. The breakfast was a bit too homestyle for my taste (crisco flavored hash browns, anyone?), but thankfully I picked french toast, which was quite possibly the safest choice. And hey, it was free, so I'm not going to complain about it! After breakfast we headed to Kennedy Space Center, located about 25 minutes away from the motel. The last time I went to KSC, I was 9, so let's just say that space travel has sure advanced since then. The visitor complex is set up much like a theme park, complete with a launch experience simulator, models of several rockets, satellites, and shuttle equipment readily available to explore or photograph, a memorial wall and tribute to all ... read more

If you’re planning a trip out of LAX any time soon, I highly recommend booking your flight for a Tuesday morning. Living in a post 9-11 world, it is almost impossible to be greeted at the airport by less than 50 people waiting in line ahead of you to check in, check bags, make your way through the security checkpoint, even to go to the restroom! Heck, lately you have to consider yourself lucky just to find out that your flight hasn’t been delayed, canceled, or the whole airline gone bankrupt while you were waiting. But this morning, not only were we pleased to find out that our flight was indeed still scheduled (and on time!), we also walked into Terminal 1 (Southwest Airlines) at 7am this morning to discover an almost empty lobby. We walked ... read more

Nous avons ... read more

The Journey - a poem written during our trip to Miami this past Christmas. The Journey ©Amelia L. Williams 2008 The smell of salt water, the prospect of seeing something other than highway, drew us down a winding road to the marsh refuge. Fat crabs hid under the rocks in the estuary, egrets lifted their legs carefully, a heron stood like another branch next to a bush, then pounced on something with its long bill. Merganser ducks and American widgeons paddled the ponds. Roseate spoonbills, heaped on the bushes like dollops of cherry ice cream, bills tucked away, had us tumbling out of the car once again, binoculars in hand, threatening the fragile truce (“It’s time to go now, no more stops. We’ve seen enough birds.”) among six travelers of frayed nerve with miles of wearying ... read more
