There are many places to visit in the United States, but to my mind two stand out above all others. They are Grand Canyon, and the Kennedy Space Center, which will be referred to hereafter as the “KSC”. The first is awe-inspiring for its natural beauty and grandeur: the second for the unparalleled achievements that it encompasses. Who would have imagined a scant century ago that today Mankind would be flying everywhere, at unimaginable speeds? Maybe Jules Verne, but very few others. Nobody would have believed even 60 years ago that men would actually walk on the Moon, and that a man-made “Space Station” would orbit our planet continuously 200 miles above us, providing opportunities for research and development not available down here on Earth. These are the two most significant things that the KSC celebrates, ... read more
It's about half-way down the Atlantic coast.
It occupies 219 sq. mi (570 km²) on Merritt Island, with a 2.6 mile landing runway for powerless space shuttles.
It's several miles north of Cape Canaveral, which is really the home port for Disney Cruises.

We are back from the cruise now....what follows is my journey log of all of it. Happy Sailing, Happy Reading, Happy Days. Welcome aboard The Enchantment of the Seas! - Day 1- Cruise Day - All aboard.......our week of fun and festivities is about to begin. The group gathered at one of the Sandcastle cottages at Tropical Palms at 10:30 AM. The bus was ready and waiting for us. Bill brought our suitcases over to the bus with his golf cart. Otherwise, we would have had to drag them through the park like homeless people. We truly appreciated it, especially Cory who would have ended up as the exhausted pack horse. We flew across Florida on the bus, landing at Port Canaveral. Check in went smoothly even though I set off the alarms through the magnetic ... read more

WOW! What a great day and better than any Disney trip you could ever do! Whilst researching this trip earlier in the year we noticed that KSC ran a 'Mega Tour' which you could book online for about 90 dollars. We booked and it was well worth it! Somehow it seemed appropriate that we were at NASA on Sept 11th although was surprised how little there was on the news or anywhere apart from the flags all flying at half mast. The day started with detaching the RV umbilical life support and departing St Augustine. We were slightly later than planned having suffered from severe heat and humidity during the night peppered with a heavy rainstorm at 2am which woke me up, a) from the noise of the rain pelting the side of the RV but ... read more

The Atlantis is kept at Kennedy Space Center in Florida. When I went there we learned about the history of the space shuttle. We went inside the Mercury pod. We also went inside the Apollo pod. We walked around some Rockets. And we walked across a pathway to the Whiteroom. Outside of a big building where the Atlantis is held, there was a statue of some solid rocket boosters attached to the gas tank. Then we went into the big building and saw a movie about how hard the engineers worked to design the shuttle. They made it to take off like a rocket and land like a airplane. Then it took off and it was all around me. Then the screen opened and there stood the space shuttle Atlantis. The Atlantis is a space shuttle. ... read more

I arrived at the hotel on the outskirts of Savannah after a long but uneventful drive. The hotel was nicer than the last few I’ve stayed at, which was good. The next morning (Saturday) I was feeling pretty lazy so decided not to do too much. After breakfast, the first thing I wanted to do was to visit the post office and send another parcel full of souvenirs home in the hope that my luggage isn’t too heavy. I still expect to be over the airline limit, though. Sending the parcel this time seemed to be more effort, and definitely took longer. They don’t seem to be in a hurry in Georgia. I can understand because it is very warm. A lady in the post office mentioned it was nice that the weather was cooling down ... read more

On the trip from Key West to Orlando we headed inland to see some different scenery. We purchased some mangos directly from an orchard. They grew 40 different varieties of mango so we took the advice of the owner’s son and purchased some Southern Blush mangos. They were simply superb! Our GPS showed our route as tracking alongside a large lake, Lake Okeechobee. Unfortunately we could not see it from the road as there was a substantial stop bank erected all round the lake. We were able to drive up onto the stop bank by the lake exit and enjoy the view where we watched a crane at the water's edge. We then travelled through an area of massive sugar cane farms. The canes and the tracks through them seemed to go on just about as ... read more

Space...Would you go if you could? Today we drove over to NASA....it was amazing!! We learned about all of the cool things that they are doing and have done in space. We even got to feel what it was like during a blast off. We saw the last shuttle on the launch pad waiting to start its count down. We also got to eat lunch with a real astronaut!! ... read more
