We had a beautiful drive across the mountains from Taos to Raton (I love the name of this town..it means "mouse" in both Spanish and French). It was chilly in the morning, but the dryness made it seem much warmer than 27 degrees when I went for a run before we left. Taos is at 7,000 feet and we climbed another 2000 feet over Palo Flechado Pass before heading down to the midwest plains on the eastside of the Rockies. I stopped to wade in Taos Creek along the way...to shallow to dip all the way in.. We took a side trip into Raton to visit the history museum there...so many artifacts to see and there was a very knowledgeable docent on duty. After Raton, the scenery was mostly monotonous: flat with dry scrub. The snow ... read more

After flying well over a million miles in my business and leisure travel, I have seen my share of unusual behavior on the plane. Here are some, and I hope it does not gross you out. Probably the worst behavior I have ever experienced first hand was an air marshal sitting in First Class with us. He proceeded to tell the flight attendant and pilot he was an air marshal, showed his ID, and told them he was armed. He started drinking hard liquor as soon as we got airborne. The lovely flight attendant finally had to cut him off after three drinks, since he was drunk, making passes toward her, and barely able to speak. Can you imagine if we really needed him to perform his job on that flight? I am certain he was ... read more

Last Friday, U.S. President Joe Biden signed the paperwork that created his first contribution to the National Park Service: the former Camp Amache in southeastern Colorado, about a three-hour drive from Colorado Springs. It was another American president, Franklin Delano Roosevelt, who signed the deeply regrettable Executive Order 9066 in February 1942. That edict, a low for American values, legalized the seizure of American citizens, their homes, and businesses, simply on the basis of whether they had Japanese heritage. The wartime measure swept some 110,000 law-abiding people—including many children—into incarceration across 10 hastily established facilities in some of the country's most desolate and forbidding locales. Amache (pictured above in 1942), the smallest of... read more

This is a post aimed at people considering vacationing to the Vail Valley, namely the resort towns of Vail, Breckenridge, Keystone and Beaver Creek. It’s also going to provide some useful information to travelers heading up to Aspen. You see, for as long as I can remember, the best way to access these resort towns if you were flying in from out of state (or out of country), was to fly into Denver International (DIA) and then make ground transportation arrangements (shuttle service, car rental or bus) to continue the journey into the Rockies. While there was an alternative option available with url=https://www.google.com/search?q=eagle+county+regional+airport&oq=eagle+county+regional+airport&rldimm=9895711538060316891&rlst=f#rlfi=hd:;si:857315950850811601Eagle County Airport (EGE) , the logistics involved with this smaller regional airport just made it an unrealistic choice ... read more

My partner and I recently got back from a trip to Eagle, Colorado. We were visiting some old buddies of ours who moved from Vail to Eagle due to the rising cost of living in the Vail Valley. While I had been to Eagle a few times in the past, the last time was quite a few years back. At the time I was still a big Vail snob (and much more ignorant being younger), and Eagle didn’t impress me much. It was with a fair amount of surprise that I learned that quite a few of my old skiing buddies were packing up and moving to Eagle, and even more surprising when they told me they actually loved living there! So when a birthday celebration for one of my favorite friends came up, I was ... read more

Not much to blog about here either. The entire day was spent taking back the rental car and changing our flight. For the last 24 hours United kept texting and e-mailing that severe weather was causing flight delays and cancelations. So, we just decided to go to the airport (had to take the car there anyway) and see if we could get a different flight. It was a zoo, lines everywhere, the departure board was flashing red with tons of cancelled flights (covid and weather related) we stood in the customer service line for 90 minutes, but we did get a flight change. Have to spent another night in Denver, but we got a much better flight directly to Boston. We just need to take car service from Logan airport back to Providence. This was basically ... read more

This is a very short entry the day was spent driving to Denver, in not great weather. We woke up to about 3 to 4 inches of snow outside of our window. We ate breakfast in the hotel. They were so short staffed, they couldn’t even clean the tables, just sat people in the bar. In reality, they could have cleaned the tables, just were organized enough to do so. After breakfast loaded up the car and headed out. The first part of the trip was not so bad. But by the time we got to Wagon Mound NM, it turned very ugly, snow, blowing snow, cars in the ditch, multiple care pile ups. The average speed was about 40. It stayed pretty bad until Colorado Springs, then cleared up a bit until about 45 miles ... read more

It has been 10 1/2 years since "the big trip" as we call our previous year long jaunt. We have traveled since then but never for more than three weeks. But we are now 50-somethings, not 40-somethings, and my Parkinson's Disease continues to increase its hold on my life. I only have a few things left on my bucket list so we decided to attempt to cross off the most difficult...the Green Flash. For those who have never heard of it, the green flash occurs right at sunset (or sunrise), almost always over the ocean and only when the sky is perfectly clear, or so I hear. It is an instance of bright jade green right at the horizon. The only person who has told me they have seen it said they saw it in the ... read more

Well 3 weeks broke my previous record but I think all my other travel blogs had about 3 or 4 entries in a shorter time. I'm back! Let's see if I can remember what I did... Sept 26-Oct 1 work threw some mandatory OT on us for the first time ever. I am still working a full time job through all of this after all! So had some long work days. Also checked out a monthly discussion group in the denver poly group. Had some online virtual socialization with people and took copper for some local walks and hikes. The extra work, and lack of much exciting going on made me fall of the travel blog wagon. Now 2 weeks later I'm wondering if there was anything else I did??? Not sure at this point... Oct ... read more

Highlights from this week: Sunday: Great Sand Dunes National Park. This was my 7th National park since I started on my mission to visit them all. The park has the tallest Sand Dunes in North America at 750 feet. Being the tallest Sand Dunes in North America isn't much though... I saw taller dunes when I was in Australia and I didn't even see the tallest dunes on that continent! There's not much to the actual park besides the park. The enjoyable part is seeing the abrupt change from mountains to sand. It would definitely be really interesting to see it in the Winter when the mountains are snow capped or in the Spring/Early summer when the river is flowing from snow melt. Sand dunes are always extremely windy. I went home with marks on my ... read more
