In Italian even the word impatient sounds romantic, impaciento. This is what my nanny called me, while my twin sister, inevitably, was the patient one. I am old enough now to know I have suffered under the spells of certain personality traits, or defects as they call them in AA, impatience, impulsiveness and over-imbibing could be said to have taken their toll, but, as a left leaning Californian with ample self improvement opportunities, I’m working on it. My trip to Colorado was going to be a long one and how better to practice patience than a ten hour trip? I had a forty five minute wait to board and then about four hours ahead in the air, three at DAX and then another sixty minute flight and a 45 minute drive up the mountain and I’d ... read more

You can just imagine that with the vast amount of air travel I have done, that I have seen some really strange behavior. Maybe bizarre would be a better term. Here they are in no particular order. Stinky First Class Yes, I was seated in First Class on a flight to Denver, but I actually had to ask the Flight Attendant if I could move back to Coach. Why? It stunk so bad, I could hardly breathe. Turns out it was the Grateful Dead on their way to a concert at "Mile High" Stadium! The Big Breast Tell me how a woman is breast feeding a 7 year old on an inter island flight in Hawaii! Everybody was both appalled and laughing! The Yogist She just decided to take over the aisle and start her yoga ... read more

The recent United flight from Denver per CNN: The pilots issued a mayday call and, after turning back to the airport, landed the Boeing 777-200 plane safely. Remarkably, there were no reports of injuries either in the air or on the ground. Still, interviews with passengers show the incident provided a huge scare for everyone involved. This has never happened to me, fortunately. But I have experienced several "close" calls. But never have any of mine involved the engine. My first bad experience was on a flight with my kids to Spring Training in Arizona. We were on a Southworst flight from Oakland, and somewhere over the mountains, a Midwest style heat lightning storm came out of nowhere. We got hit, and it sounded and felt like the entire plane would fall ... read more

Last February, back in 2020, right before all the Covid-19 madness really hit the U.S. and life and travel changed so much for everybody. Tom and I are both avid skiers. I’m Denver born and raised, and grew up skiing in Winter Park and Eldora, Colorado. Tom’s from the East Coast, and is not quite as advanced as I am, but still a very good skier. Tom skied with his folks mostly in Vermont at sugar Bush and Stove. Tom and I had been together for nearly 6 months at that point, and we had talked about taking a little ski trip, but work commitments and other affairs simply kept us too busy. So, while we were out enjoying some sushi at our favorite local spot, the conversation had once again turned to skiing and how ... read more

It was in the summer of 2016 when I visited the Trinidad History Museum and received a great tour. I got entry and a full tour of the Baca House and the Bloom Mansion for free. (Now they have a small entry fee.) I started with the main museum with the exhibits I posted in this blog. The tour of the houses are available with the museum guide only. Outside they have a nice garden where visitors can eat the veggies for free. In the main museum they had a bushel of good apples and invited me to take a bag of apples also free. (They also give to local charities.) My tour guide was a qualified historian that was full of useful information. We started with a tour of the Baca House. Don Felipe de ... read more

After I drove a few miles on private land on Gunnison County 12, I entered a section of the Gunnison National Forest. I turned on FS 759 following Anthracite Creek through the Erickson picnic area then I turned around at the campground fee area. I had a nice short stay by the creek in the free picnic area. When I returned to Gunnison 12 I crossed the bridge over Anthracite Creek. I drove four miles on private land, and turned South on FS 709 that followed Coal Creek. I entered into the Gunnison NF and found a few very nice free camps by Coal Creek. The FS road was a narrow one lane road with few wide spots to pull over for the occasional oncoming traffic. The road got progressively worse with rare places to pull ... read more

I had drove from Pueblo, Colorado, West on US Hwy 50 toward my camp in the Gunnison National Forest. Since it was dark I turned into the national forest for a legal emergency camp. The next morning I woke up at my camp in the San Isabel National Forest, East of the Continental Divide. Near the divide I made a brief detour to see Old Monarch Pass on FS 237. Then I drove to the divide at Monarch Pass for a photo shoot. They had a store there and also a ski lift. I made a careful drive down the mountain chain to my first planned camp in the Gunnison NF. Discussion: I had planned my vacation camping trip to last five weeks. Since they had a major snowstorm in Colorado before I departed from Nacogdoches, ... read more

I drove West from Monarch Pass on US Hwy 50 and saw a warning sign (on Colorado Interstate and US Highways) warning people of the statewide fire hazards and not to burn. Getting near Gunnison, Colorado I saw a neat old church. In Gunnison I got gasoline, food, other supplies that I needed for camping in the back-country. I turned North on State Hwy 135 for Crested Butte. (At Crested Butte all supplies are fairly expensive.) There are still no signs for county road 12 (left turn) until you leave the City of Crested Butte, and it is hard to find. Gunnison County Road 12 quickly enters the Gunnison National Forest. This road is now paved (unfortunately) up through Kebler Pass at about 10,000 feet elevation. The dirt trail there on the ridge at the pass ... read more

I awoke up to a knock on my hotel door by the room attendant cuz I was thirty minutes late on my 11 AM checkout. I called the hotel office and informed that I could check out in a hour. They nicely did not charge me extra for my late checkout. I had places to see in Trinidad before I drove to my first back-country camp. I started on Commercial Street in the center of downtown Trinidad. (My last visit in Trinidad in 2017, Commercial Street was closed due to construction improving the street.) Many of the old buildings in Trinidad date back to the late 1800s. I had a nice slow drive on Commercial Street and made stops to shoot the neat old buildings. Note: The last four pics that are West of Interstate Hwy ... read more

No trip to Trinidad, Colorado would be complete without a visit to the Kit Carson (city) park. The park is up a hill in nice trees including Colorado Blue Spruce. They have a full size bronze statue of Carson on a sturdy horse, placed there in 1913. There is a good view there of Fisher's Peak; a notable landmark on the Santa Fe Trail. I could sit there for hours enjoying the natural setting and thinking about the rich history of Trinidad and "Kit". Christopher Houston (Kit) Carson (1809-1868) was a true American frontiersman and his exaggerated myth was told in the "dime novels" of the time. Kit Carson had very great physical and mental abilities that shaped the Westworld expansion of the USA to the Pacific Ocean, but at a great cost of the Native ... read more
