I am excited to report the trip to Nepal in March 2007 is on! Along with 3 colleagues, I will fly from Denver to Bangkok on Monday, March 12th and then on to Kathmandu. We will return to Denver on Saturday, March 24th. Making flight reservations to Asia for the first time, I am trying to determine if it will be less expensive if I book the Bangkok/Kathmandu leg once we get to Bangkok. Please send me a message if you have any thoughts on the likelihood of successfully getting to Kathmandu if I book 12 hours before the flight from the Bangkok airport. During our trip, we will be traveling via auto from Kathmandu to some villages along the southern border about 7 hours away. We will be working alongside current volunteers in the area ... read more

Not for me... the story: Christmas is spent with family. Always. In all my (umm, few) years, I've always been with family on Christmas Day. Well, this year, Denver got hit with a huge snow storm on the 20th of December. Where does my family live? Denver. Where was I going? Denver. When was my flight to Denver? My flight was on the morning of the 22nd. I should be fine, right? Well, DIA (Denver's airport) shut down, and the flight cancelations just kept piling up... They actually closed the airport for almost 48 hours. Are you kidding me? A closure of a major airport hub for 2 days? So when was my flight from Los Angeles (LAX) to Denver? 11:30 a.m. on the 22nd. Whose flight was the first United flight to leave LAX for ... read more

This blog entry is pretty old and incomplete. Read at own risk ;) It never snows in Denver someone said to me. He was clearly lying. I had one week of nearly cold but perfect weather. Then on the day when I had to travel a bit further it starts snowing. It all didn’t start too bad. Got up early and did the 30+ miles in 1h 45 min not too bad for rush-hour traffic, which is slowed down by a bit of snow on the ground. I got a bit suspicious when two of the people I wanted to meet with didn’t show up because of the weather. The final hint came when the governor announced a civil state f emergency and started deploying the national guard and all that because of a bit of ... read more

I love a heavy snowfall. Not just because of the beauty of a thick white blanket, but because all the normal social rules take a holiday. For once, people loosen the buckles of their straitjackets and relate like the loving humans they really are. Despite the dire warnings issued on the TV news, the two feet of snow that hit Denver this week built more community than a month’s worth of ‘Holiday Festivals.’ It seems that when the mittens go on, the facades come off. Around here, we built community one snowshovel-full at a time. “Why are you shoveling way up here?” a neighbor named Pete asked me. We were both outside in the midst of the storm, trying to stay ahead of the snowfall. I had already cleared the sidewalks of the two neighbors on ... read more

Just to say hello to everyone from Denver! I arrived in Denver last night after a layover in Atlanta (Boring airport, by the way! I think I walked up and down the terminal about 10 times out of shear boredom). The Denver airport is nice...very well laid out from what I could tell, and the architecture is pretty neat, with the centre looking like a tent city and blending in with the mountains (or so I was told since I couldn't see the mountains through the snow). And it was snowing when I arrived, and it's been snowing on/off all day. I ventured around downtown a bit, and my first impression is that the city is a lot like Calgary...a cowtown that's up and coming. The Denver Art Museum is pretty neat...I didn't have time to ... read more

Cloudy with snow forecast, 18c You invite a strange Aussie into your circle of friends; introduce him to life in the Rocky Mountains & invite him to the dinner table for the most important celebration of the year - Thanksgiving. He eats all your food, enjoys some wine and than throws up in your bathroom. That person unfortunately is me. I was asked whether Adelaide has any high mountain ranges and before I could stop laughing I was informed that the mountain road I’d just driven across reached peaks of 11,500ft. That’s almost 11,000ft higher than any mountain I’d seen in Adelaide! Little did I know my laughter would come back to haunt me. Add a gigantic feast of Thanksgiving proportions, some wine, more food, desert and a Denver altitude of 8800ft and this little Aussie ... read more

Denver was the most amount of time we had spent in anywhere during the trip. It was a chance to kick back and relax from all the recent driving around. We stayed the whole time with an American family that Nomes has met at the camp in Canada where she had worked. The first day there we went to Colorado springs by invite and walked around the garden of the gods, looking at the rock formations. Something to do! Next day Nomes went up pikes peak while I chilled out back home. So during our stay we ended up riding some bike trails around south Denver, watching a bunch of movies, going to church and meeting more friendly yankees. We even got some snow on the Sunday which made me consider the trip home more seriously. ... read more

Well, I guess it's that time again. I finally have some time to tell you what we have been up to since our last email. Seems like ages ago I wrote it as we have been on the road quite a bit since then. Russ found a little welding company that could do our welding for us in Vegas. They were only meant to weld a hitch together that we could bolt to the car but we found out later that they have welded it to the chassis and have painted the hitch while it is on the car!!! Russ isn't too impressed as he could have done a better job himself but it does the job for now. It only cost us $200 so we shouldn't complain. Will have to take photos of it for ... read more

So here goes my first blog. How exciting. I write this from Denver where I am currently sitting on my bed in the hotel trying to decide what to do with my last 5 hours here before I fly to Raleigh/Durhham. I travel for work, so every single week I am in a different city, sitting on a different bed in a different hotel, and I love it. Hampton Inn this time. I applaud the Hilton hotel chain, including of course Paris. They beat the Sheraton out every time. Hilton El Conquistador in Tucson is spectacular. Luxurious and romantic. The Hampton Inns, Doubletrees, and Hilton Garden Inns do not dissapoint either. I can't say the same for the Sheraton, which always charges an outrageous rate to park your vehicle on the property for which you just ... read more
