Denver…. From Houston we travelled north to the ‘mile high’ city of Denver where we were staying with my Aunt Dorothy’s brother Joe and (soon to be wife!) Melissa along with nine month old Ava who was so sweet! The greyhound journey took us through Amarillo which was so cool…although I have no idea why Tony Christie would want to be shown the way there especially as there didn’t seem to be loads to do but then again I did only see the bus station so I cant really comment! It cheered me up a bit because the 23 hr journey was starting to grate. They actually lived just south of Denver in a really great house with some fantastic views of the mountains, saw an awesome sunset. They met us at the nearest greyhound station ... read more

It took us ages to actually even get out of Texas, the place is massive. The gruelling 23 hour journey from Houston to Denver was made bearable by the beautiful scenery we encountered as we got near to Colorado. After going through the flat pan handle region it was such a treat for the eyes to see foot hills and green trees. We made quite a few stops on the way, including Amarillo. Yes Greyhound showed us the way to Amarillo! We even came across an American woman we had met in Memphis. She had asked us to look after her elderly mother (82!!!! what a grand age to live till and still be quite active in mind and body) who was on her way to Lake Charles (which is half way between Baton Rouge and ... read more

Hi Another red hot day in Denver; but spent a while indoors taking in the limited tourist options. After getting up early I walked across downtown to the State capitol building which at least is distinct from all the other skyscraper towers in design and to see what time the art museam and the colorado history museam opened; which was an hour or two away. But in the meantime I got chatting to a mexican employee at the art museum (whom was cleaning outside) all about life here in Colorado and about the massive range of poverty and wealth in this country and I have seen alot of people living in teh streets in Denver only metres away from financial skyscrapers this morning. I later visited the Colorado History Museam which was great, lots of interesting ... read more

Hi all Well I finally made it to Denver aka the 1 mile high city as it is situated on flat plain just east of the Rocky Mountains at 5920ft above sea level. So its like sitting on 1 and a half Ben Nevis mountains. The long drive from the airport has the advantage of viewing Denvers downtown skyscrapers with the magnificant Rocky Mountains in the background. The sunshine is great and the warm air a relief from Boston. I feel like I was in a washing machine in Boston to now be in a tumble dryer in Denver, as the contrast is pretty vast. I just had a few hours walking around and I am now 7 hours behind London time, there is a mile of shops on 16th street which is well pedestrianised, but ... read more

well... the count is in our favor for the hotel to camping it experience, 3 to 4, and hotel is winning. My current location is sitting in front of the State Capitol Building, in downtown Denver CO, sitting in the car, and using the computer! AND listening to Joni Mitchell. Weird. anyway... Since South Dakota our trip has taken a turn for the better, sort of. We went from Mitchell, South Dakota, and made our way to Wyoming. We went to the Wind Cave National Park along the way. That was amazing. You go into caves that desend down 160 feet into the ground. It was hard to breath and scary at first, but since I'm such a trooper, I made it through. From the Wind Caves, we went south down to Wyoming. That was amazing! ... read more

Well the time is here, I still can't believe that I am heading half way around the world to the land of Pyramids, Pharoahs, The Nile, and so much more! Im leaving from Denver and flying non stop to London Heathrow. Once there, assuming flights are ontime, i get to sit and twiddle my thumbs for 4hours and 45 minutes, and then its on to Cairo! It should be quite the adventure, I hope I am able to maintain this journal, and that you are able to follow along with me! Enjoy!... read more

T minus 7 days, and I'm off on my first solo travel adventure! I found this great program (InterExchange) that placed me with a nice family in Madrid. I'm going to live in their home for three months, teaching their children English in exchange for room and board. I feel so excited and scared right now. I'm glad I committed to this adventure before I really thought it through! My Spanish is lousy. I'm on the introverted end of the spectrum, so I know I need to make a concerted effort to interact with people, and I know that will be a challenge with the language barrier. I guess I'm most afraid of linguistic isolation. Hopefully blogging will help me feel connected while I'm gone. I just finished my PhD a few weeks ago, and when ... read more

In three months, I'll be on my way to Munich--the first city of many I plan to visit during my tour of Europe! I've been saving and planning since the summer of 2004, and with each passing month, I get more anxious and excited. My original plans were to travel for two to three months, and I hoped to cover almost all of Europe and wanted to even visit Morocco! As time and money (not to mention vacation at work) became an issue, my itinerary shortened, and when I finally purchased my plane ticket, I settled for May 15 - June 6. During these three weeks, I'm "planning" on travelling from Munich, Germany to Prague, Czech Republic; to Cesky Krumlov, Czech Republic; to Krakow, Poland; to Venice, Italy; to Vienna, Austra; to Grunau im Almtal, ... read more

First stop was the New Orleans airport. From there I rushed around like crazy trying to figure out what to do since I had never been on an airplane before, nor in an airport at that. While waiting at the gate for my flight a group of teenagers had me take a group picture of them. They were traveling to Denver, Colorado to go skiing. After a while I then ended up meeting a couple and their child from Slidell, Louisiana. The lady's husband was originally from Slidell, and his family and himself were visiting his Mother. They were traveling back to where they live in Denver, Colorado. The flight was delayed by an hour, I believe, but I finally discovered what it's like to travel on an airplane. Personally I found that I like traveling ... read more
