I'm about three weeks into the planning of this trip. About a week after I began the process, I sent an e-mail out to friends and family letting them know about my endeavor. I've really enjoyed the reaction; people get so excited about traveling! My mom and aunt will be joining me for a week and my husband is also coming out for a week. Others have asked - or hinted:) - but I have to stay firm and say, "NO! I want to be alone!" I was in Paris for a couple of days in 2000 and absolutely fell in love with it. It's like nowhere I've ever been and it exceeded my expectations a hundred times over. I've wanted to go back, and knew that I would, but I guess I never really thought ... read more

We left San Francisco on Saturday, April 28, heading East to Denver on our 3rd leg of the train trip on the California Zepyhr, which travels over 2400 miles from CA to Chicago (we would make a stop about 1/2 way in Denver). Little did we know what was in store regarding schedules for these last two stretches on the train. But we learned the importance of remaining calm and were grateful we did not have connections to make at the other end. Apparently this train is notoriously late. Despite our on-time departure from Emeryville, CA we frequently had to yield to the freight traffic and then encountered a disabled freight train in eastern California which put us as much as 8 hours behind schedule at one point. The engineers were able to make up ... read more

When we reached Denver, we'd just about experienced visual overload with all that we'd seen in less than a week - from the dry high desert tundra, the amazing red rocks, the expanses, the blue skies, the yellow spring flowers, the green cacti and then the forests, the snow and more blue sky. So when we left Denver and hit the rolling hills of Nebraska and flat lands of Iowa, we became mesmerized by the amazing vastness of this country. ... read more

We touched down in Denver after quite a bumpy approach, but all was well. I can’t complain because the pilot did warn us that it would be turbulent. After figuring my way around the airport, I hopped the shuttle to the car rentals and picked up a Toyota Highlander. I didn’t have many choices, but I was going to go with something that large anyway. Since I was in for a long haul touching three states, I wanted the comfort. So I took a few wrong turns before finding my way off the airport property and hit the highway. Man, did that feel good after being cooped up in dense, crowded Chicago for two days. I hit the open road and laughed out loud when I saw the highway speed limit posted as 75 MPH. ... read more

Good morning! I'm writing this after finishing my packing (I did have some wonderful help so it only took 2-1/2 hours)!! For those of you that relish the planning part of a trip as much as I do and spend the week before you travel laying out everything you need, here is a picture of the living room this morning. Believe it or not, everything fit in the carry-on bag in the back side - even all my clothes which hadn't made it out of the closet yet. (--wanted to test the picture function before I left from a computer I know; always the detail person) We are off to Nepal in the morning, but right now it's to bed for me so I can get a few hours of sleep... The next time I write, ... read more

This is a most excellent article Acacia wrote for anyone thinking about/interested in taking a train trip: Factoids About Trains, by the First-Timer, for the First-Timer: by Acacia Uible (ahhhh! I'm Uible, not Hillard now. Freaky!) There's an interesting mix of people who ride the trains. Some use them to commute (outskirts of chicago into town, for instance). These people get an affordable rate, so students and many others stay on for a short time. The people in for the long haul include: people who dislike air travel (out of fear, or for environmental reasons, or religious reasons-Amish/Menonnite), older people who find other travel difficult, people who like the adventure, or people who have and like the time that it takes to travel. You almost never see people who are in a hurry, the disabled (I ... read more
