Visiting Kat in Santa Barbara was sobering in ways that I can't explain. Perhaps it's because we're the same age, grew up together, and we're young lovers once. Perhaps she reminds me of the time that we've lost being wanderers and wasting our youth. I look forward to and dread our meetings. Not because there's no love there, but because I know we will always have honest conversations that go deep, to our insecurities. That's what happens in relationships when you only see each other once or twice a year. The transition from "Hello! How are you?" to "What are you doing with your life?" is much faster than in normal relationships. We always know the real score so we can't pretend that we have everything together like the impression that most people have of us. ... read more

I can’t believe it has been two and a half months since Scott turned in his notice at work on April 13th, officially cementing our plans to travel, turning dreams into reality. Since then, I have had a lot of questions from friends and family, mainly about our exact plans but also how we came up with a crazy idea like this! First, the plan… We have tickets out of Los Angeles on August 30th. We fly first to the UK to catch up with friends and family for a week before continuing on to Johannesburg, South Africa. We will spend September, October, and November in South Africa. Most of it will be in Kruger National Park, and a few weeks at the end will be in Addo Elephant Park. All of our accommodation in the ... read more

Geo: 34.5961, -120.145I was feeling much better about food this morning and ate a full breakfast. We finished packing up, and then headed over to nearby Balboa Park to explore. It was Monday morning commute time, and we wanted to avoid traffic if we could. It was already blazing hot in the 80s even though it was 9am. We wandered around Balboa Park looking at architecture that reminded me a little of Gaudi's work in Spain. The park is full of museums- its like our Golden Gate Park in San Francisco. At some point when Arya's a little older, or if there's ever a trip before then without her, I'd love to go back and visit the museums. She's still a little too young. :) Okay. A lot too young. Then it was time to head ... read more

When we came home from our third and “final” round the world trip in 2009, we never thought we’d do it again until retirement. That trip was kind of our last taste of freedom, our last hurrah, before settling down to the real world of kids and a mortgage. So, here we are, seven years later with two beautiful kids ages 2 and 4, a mortgage, decent cars, and even some quality furniture in our bedroom in place of the cardboard boxes that we had used as nightstands for as long as I can remember. Yep, we really are living the American dream in our picturesque California coastal town. The problem is, when you have traveled like we have, completely free of ties and worries, seeing the world with nothing to your name but the contents ... read more

First and foremost, I am going on my first international trip to London for New Years!!! Yayy!! the process of getting there has been an interesting one indeed. Since May I have not had internet so therefore no blog. I decided to try out love and move out to the woods with someone I had been dating for awhile to learn about farm life. After a stressful season and heartbreak, my branching out lead to meeting some really awesome people from London. The invite and pull out to the UK could not be ignored and I decided to jump on the idea and head out Christmas Eve. This begins, sparks and fulfills a dent in my wanderlust. So far I have created a Couchsurfers, Airbnb, and Trusted Housesitters profile to further expand my adventures. Although I ... read more

The last event of our trip here in California was, of course, Halloween. Sandwiched in between mountain walks we went to Halloween Parties, pumpkin patches and spent an afternoon Trick or Treating around the local area. The first event was a fancy dress party in the back yard of a friend of Sharon's . 'Huge garden' would have been a more accurate description with their own swimming pool, sand pit, trampoline, swings and slide, plus numerous other play structures. Everyone joined in and turned up in fancy dress, Stan was Fred Flintstone and I wore a red rock and roll skirt. Most other people, I have to say, were wearing costumes with a Halloween theme. Oh well we did our best!! The children here had a great time playing games to do with spiders and ghosts ... read more

Our last few days in California were a bit hectic so I have some back tracking to do. During the whole time we were here the region was hit by a terrific heatwave with temperatures regularly hitting the high 90's F with no rainfall to speak of. We'd been very restricted as to what walking trails we could actually hike - seeking shady ones mostly. The trouble is with tree lined shady paths you don't get the views. One of our favorite paths that we'd intended to repeat was the Tunnel Trail which takes you for five and a half miles up to Le Cumbre Peak over 4000ft high. The path gives fantastic views of the coast line stretching both North and South. We'd done this path 3 years previously and knew that from the path ... read more

Santa Barbara is backed by a long, high mountain range. Anyone that know us knows we are drawn to mountains. Even though we've probably trekked most of the trails here in the past we're always looking for new ones or happy to repeat our favourite from before. One we discovered over a year ago was called 'The Playground' it had been difficult to find the start of the trail but once on it was an adventure of scrambling through a path overgrown with shrubs opening out at some huge rock formations overlooking the ocean in the distance. This time finding the path was just as difficult but after searching we found it and instantly recognised it. The shrubs seemed higher and more scratchy than before as we wound our way along the path, should have put ... read more

'Endless Summer' is the name of one of our favourite bars in Santa Barbara, California. We have been here in Santa Barbara for just over two weeks and the name of the bar is very appropriate. Despite being in the middle of October it feels more like the height of summer with blue skies and temperatures in the mid eighties to mid nineties degrees F. We came primarily to catch up with our daughter, Sharon, and the grandchildren but also to enjoy the Californian sunshine, the beaches and mountain walks. After a long flight, with multiple stop overs, we arrived into Los Angeles quite late at night so, after collecting the rental car, stopped off in a motel close by. Next day we spent visiting 'Big Bear' a place close to L.A we tried to see ... read more

So we left our home near San Francisco, a little sad to be leaving such a great place but very excited to be heading back to the coast again! After a brief stop in Santa Cruz - best described as Blackpool with sun - we picked up Highway 1 down to Carmel-by-the-Sea, where we’d booked a campsite for a couple of nights. It turned out that this campsite was quite something: swimming pool with fancy chairs around the edge, wifi (on a campsite?!) and views over to the lovely hills behind. When we hit Carmel itself that evening, it all became clear – this was a very fancy place! We found an Olde English Sweet Shoppe with everything from Crunchies to Digestives… but I couldn’t bring myself to spend £1.50 on a Curly Wurly so left ... read more
