Transcribed from a letter written May 20, 2015 I think this post will mark six weeks on the road unplugged and the first direct and focused commentary on digital technology. It's interesting I haven't written much about it because from day one I have been living the intention of no digital technology and telling everyone I meet about it. Obviously, I have no cell phone or computer but no debit card, either. Cash or check only (which has been the only annoyance. I've run out of cash on a Friday night, twice!!) People are interested in knowing if I'm experiencing withdrawal symptoms. I have to admit, there have been zero withdrawal symptoms. From day one, I have felt a freedom such as I have not felt since childhood - a complete liberation. It's not merely being ... read more

Continued from previous blog post... As stated in my last post we are currently planning and booking our vacation for this year. We are flying into LAX from London Heathrow and have already got our itinerary planned out based on previous trips and experience. Day 1: Our flight doesn't get into LA until quite late so we are staying at LAX that night as we have on previous trips then collecting the car the next morning. Day 1 will consist of our first drive north to stay in San Luis Obispo (SLO). There isn't an awful lot to do here and we like to be busy and see and do as much as possible so we are breaking up the journey by spending the afternoon in Santa Barbara. We stayed here a few years ago and ... read more

Dad, Ania, and I left Amanda’s house to go to Solvang. It was a beautiful drive going there. We stopped at a place to get food for our picnic lunch. We got pesto pasta, samosas, kale salad, and cheese. We then met Avo Jay and Roz and all got into one car. We drove to the first winery, Zaca Mesa. My dad, Ania and Roz had wine. I talked with Avo Jay about school and friends. The next winery was Fess Parker. It was kind of old style with fireplaces and wood walls. Fess Parker was an actor who played in a move called, “Davey Crocket.” Near a couch was a little stand that had the raccoon hats on it. The next winery was called Bridlewood. It was where we ate all the food. While my ... read more

The second port was Santa Barbara, California. The ship was running behind schedule and then the port crew was behind, also. They didn't have all of the staff to come inspect the boat and they had no clue where the last guy was. I called Enterprise after breakfast to tell them that we wouldn't be able to pick up the car for another couple hours. We finally got cleared to go ashore, but this was a tender port. Usually what this entails is everyone trying to get their families first in line and get into the little boats as fast as possible. I was pleasantly surprised by how little of this 'rush' there really was. We've done a number of tender ports, but never got to use the lifeboats for it, until now. Sometimes we would ... read more

Here is the last post from Santa Barbara. We didn't have internet so I'm just now sending it. We're in Vegas now! __________ Well, it's our last night in Santa Barbara and we just got done eating a fantastic meal. Rita made chicken enchiladas and Eyerusalem made a chicken and veggie soup. Karla is heading to bed and Nick is on his computer. Baraki has been studying for his RN exam and I've been bothering him. We're all kinda walking around like zombies; we were pretty active today. We took a ferry "wild life" cruise to the Channel Islands today and had a great time. Sea lions, dolphins, and an assortment of interesting birds all presented themselves for our entertainment. I've never seen anything like it actually, I'll post a video of the sea lions and ... read more

Good evening everyone! Once again, the internet is hit or miss for us. I'm sitting at the vanity countertop in Nick's bathroom (which is huge) to get a connection. The router is in his room and for some reason the rest of the house can't get it. I believe everyone is asleep, we had another big day……..but this time at the beach! We made good time yesterday and arrived at our house in Santa Barbara at 4pm. As you will see in the pictures, there is a hammock between 2 giant palm trees in the back yard and our view is pretty amazing. The house is on the side of a hill that is about 4 miles from the ocean, which we can see part of. Our rental is very spacious, which is important at this ... read more

Just realized I never got round to publishing this blog - so 2 weeks overdue, here's the last one for a while. Our next leg of the trip was to return to Santa Barbara via Highway One coastal road. The highway is about 90 miles and twists and turns frequently with spectacular drops in places. The whole route took us 8 hours due to the many twists and the fact that we stopped frequently to take photos. At Big Sur there's a Redwood National Park, it was approaching lunch time by the time we reached there so seemed a good place to explore, eat a picnic and take a walk to stretch our legs. From here we took to the road again and an hour or so later got to Julia Phiffer National Park. It's basically ... read more

After a whirlwind two weeks back home from our trip around Thailand and Malaysia we have arrived in California. The moment we arrived home I began ploughing through the mountain of post that had arrived while we'd been away, some of it junk mail but lots that needed urgent attention. Add to this the fact that our flight schedule to get here had been completely changed meaning the connections didn't work out any more. After spending over a week on the phone being tossed between Delta Airlines, Air France, and KLM we finally got it sorted out but instead of the nice easy change overs that we'd selected we ended up having to get up before the crack of dawn to get to the airport in Manchester and waiting around in Atlanta for 6 hours. By ... read more

Hey Everybody, I did something that I wanted to tell to you about. I finished hiking from my home in downtown Santa Barbara to Ventura county line. It's only about 20 miles as the crow flies, but it is 60 miles as I walked. I thought of doing a hike across the county when Grace and I were on the Camino de Santiago in Spain last year near Pamplona - see previous blog. I did this hike in 8 separate hikes and only one 3-day backpacking weekend. I have really enjoyed getting out and doing a systematic hike instead of randomly hiking places. Grace has gone with me on 3 of the hikes and has helped me by driving so that I don't have to double back. About 30 of the miles were from backtracking to ... read more
