Eggs over medium please... The bakery below our rooms was closed on Tuesdays but there was a little cafe a few doors away so we decided it would be a good idea to eat there as we didn’t have a lot of time. Mike had booked us a tour of Hearst Castle home to The Hearst family (remember Patti Hearst).. and we needed to be on the road by ten. We packed the cars checked out and sat down in the cafe for a cooked breakfast to see us through. We ordered our eggs over easy and bacon and I asked if mine could be cooked a little more as I can’t eat runny eggs... “so you’ll be wanting over medium she said.. so that’s what they call it... No more runny eggs for us!. Martin ... read more

We have left LA and started the drive up the coast road. We stopped at Santa Monica again as we were driving past. The beach was the set for the tv show Baywatch; however we didn't recreate the opening credits with a run along the beach in our swim wear (instead you have a photo of the look-out tower and the iconic yellow van). We continued to Malibu beach (which wasn't particularly nice) and onto our hotel in Santa Barbara. We relaxed in the sunshine and went swimming in the outdoor pool (the picture below is the view from our room). ... read more

Our time in the States has almost come to an end, we have just 5 days left. When we booked to come for the months of December and January we had no idea really what kind of weather we were going to experience all we knew was that we wanted to get away from our terrible weather in England for a while. Well we certainly did that, although we have had a few days when the temperature dipped and we needed to wear coats (even a scarf one day which is usually unheard of here!) in general it has been mild or even hot. We have spent a lot of time exploring the many mountain trails here, almost to the point that we recognise all the peaks now and can honestly say that we’ve conquered most ... read more

Happy New Year to everyone. We are still in California, enjoying the wall to wall sunshine. We have seen some rain but nothing compared to back in the UK. Enjoying spending time with Sharon, Scott and of course new granddaughter Kyla who is changing every day. She is really beginning to play now helped by her numerous Christmas Presents. We hiked to the top of Montecito Peak,3,200, ft on Friday, one of the highest peaks around here. We stood on the top picking out trails for future walks, the views were fantastic and we were amazed at the colourful wild shrubs growing up there. We have been putting lots of photos on facebook as they load faster than on this site but for those who do not do facebook I will add some here. Once again, ... read more

Merry Christmas to everyone! Well another year has almost come to an end. It’s been quite an eventful year for us, out of 12 months we’ve only actually spent 4 months in Britain. In January we set of to travel around S.E. Asia for 4 months then in June we came to California just in time for the birth of our first grandchild. We stayed for 3 months watching her grow from a newborn into a little person and also helping with the new house renovations. Gary and Milena joined us for our last two week there and we all enjoyed a real family reunion. At the end of November we returned to California to catch up with Sharon, Scott and Kyla. We will be here until the end of January hopefully missing the worst of ... read more

After a great Thanksgiving, we woke up and Daddy and I grabbed bagles and lox to bring back for breakfast. Yummy. Then Daddy, Roz, Avo' Jay and I drove up to Santa Barbara. It was a beautiful drive with a lot of it right by the Pacific Ocean. Daddy said it was a lot colder than the beaches in Florida. Daddy had been looking forward to getting back to Santa Barbara as that is where he lived for 5 years during college at UCSB (University of California at Santa Barbara). He really love that school. We first drove to the city of Santa Barbara and headed right for the pier. It was a little foggy. I had fun throwing money off the pier and trying to make it into the target. Daddy thought it was creative ... read more

Time to relax and enjoy our last week here before returning home. Gary and Milena had joined us so that was as good a reason as any to stop working. We spent the week at the harbour, in downtown Santa Barbara, on the beach and trips to the mountains, not to mention time chilling out by the pool and BBQ's on the patio. There were two tricky moments, one was when we narrowly missed stepping on a rattlesnake sunning itself across the path and a sign warning us of a great white shark sighting just up the coast but it was fine we swam in the pool insread! One night we joined Tom and Wanda at an Italian Restaurant for a final family meal together. A few days later Gary and Milena took off on a ... read more
