The family is off to Skagway by ferry. It’s raining this morning, but it’s a spitty-rain, not a downpour, so walking is fine. We thought it was about a 15-minute walk, so we left early to be on time and got to the dock 30 minutes early. While standing around talking to a local, we saw eagles and otters. That made it worth it! It was still raining when we got to Skagway and the wind was cold, so the first place we went was a tee-shirt shop for me to get a long-sleeved tee shirt to put on under my short-sleeved one. We also bought an umbrella since we didn’t bring one with us on the ferry. For Princess, we put a garbage bag over her “backpack” Snoozer. I think most people thought we had ... read more

We embarked from Juneau around 10:00 PM, heading to the northernmost port of the Inside Passage, Skagway. Upon waking on Thursday morning, we were already berthed in Skagway. It’s a small, charming town set among the high peaks of the Yukon. The town also relies on the tour ships for the majority of its income. We found a local café on the one main street for lunch and watched the people from within. The six blocks were lined with jewelry stores, souvenir shops and that’s about it. The lone bank, a Wells Fargo sat at the very end of town. During the winter months, about 800 hearty souls live in Skagway. In the summer, the town doubles in size to service the tourists. We engaged the young lady serving us in the café. She is a ... read more

Thursday, May 26th starting mileage 8512. 71 degrees and sunny. Got an early start as wanted to avoid the tours off the cruise ships. Parts of Skagway are administered by the National Park Service so we started in the old Train Depot for a city history tour led by a Park Ranger. There is a small museum in the depot and a topographic map of the two passes into the Yukon. When the gold seekers came by ship they had two options: dock at Dyea and take the Chilkoot pass or dock at Skagway and go up the White Pass. Early on, most used the steep stair step Chilkoot pass carrying a ton of food and supplies their backs. Usually they made 10 trips carrying 200 pounds each trip. The packs were so heavy they wore ... read more

Again, another super quick entry: Juneau: yesterday we spent the morning at Mendenhell Glacier just outside Juneau. I hiked all around the base of the glacier - stunning blues from the ice. I ended up following a fieldtrip class (yeah, I'm a stlaker haha) because they seemed to have a better trail. Got some amazing shot I'll add later. In the afternoon we took the tramway to the top of the mountain in Juneau - they have a rescued eagle up there - holy, they are beautiful creatures to see up close. Again, I hiked a bit up the mountain, but the trails were still slippery and covered with snow, so i didn't go very far. Skagway: this morning we went up to the Yukon Suspension Bridge (which oddly enough is located in British Columbia...?). The ... read more

Sidenote: picking photos for this entry was pretty much an eenie-meanie-mo kind of deal. I have so many photos from today, that this really is just a random sample haha Wow, what a pretty day =) We had a full day-trip planned for Skagway, and it didn’t disappoint! We took a bus tour which brought us up to White Pass summit – stunning drive. Our driver was great; we got to hear all about the Gold Rush and how the train from Skagway to Whitehorse came to be. Mom and I had a good laugh – it took them all of 2 years to build this railway in the late 1890s… and Ottawa can’t even get its act together to build a tunnel thru the downtown-core. How sad. Anyway, we stopped to take photos along ... read more

Today I hiked up toward the top of a mountain. It took about 51/2 hours. I hiked about 5 and a 1/2 miles. I saw lots of amazing sites including Lower Dewey Lake and Icy Lake. Sophia my five year old cousin and my aunt Suzie had to quit three quarters of the way because Sophia couldn't climb any more. The people who successfully finished the hike were Me, Grammy, Sahara my nine year old cousin, Asia my seven year old cousin, Stacey Suzie's friend, Cassy Sahara's best friend, Niko Cassy's brother, and Joy another one of Suzie's friend. We completed a very big destiny! ... read more

Today I went on the White Pass and Yukon Railroad. It is the route that the Stampeders took from Skagway to Dawson City, Yukon where the gold rush took place. It was very fun and I saw lots of amazing sites. I went though two tunnels and over four bridges. One bridge was very narrow and also old and when you looked down there was a one thousand foot drop.... read more

The word lovely is a strange adjective to couple with the word Skagway, but today was a lovely day here - sunny, blue skies and 77 degrees Fahrenheit. Rachel and I took advantage of the situation and rode the scenic White Pass and Yukon Railroad up to the White Pass Summit. Leaving from the train depot in town near the docks, the 20 mile ride passes over several bridges and waterfalls and through two tunnels. In Canada, at the summit, the engines switch positions from the front of the train to the back and the seat backs flip over so that we face in the opposite direction. The scenery was absolutely spectacular on the trip up and back again.... read more
