Well, it’s been almost a year since we updated the blog, so I’ll try and catch up. Can I attribute this to writer’s block?? Nah, just laziness, I guess, or the daunting task of reviewing thousands of photos and trying to remember stuff. After leaving Fairbanks in August, we re-connected with friends Patti and Bill and headed back through the Yukon Territory and northern British Columbia to visit the Alaska town of Skagway. A favorite cruise ship port, Skagway is only accessible by land if you drive through British Columbia. A visit to the Red Onion Saloon was fun, as we had a couple of beers and sang along with the piano player. The four of us squeezed into a Bush Hawk X-P for a Glacier Bay Flightseeing tour, which was breathtaking. http://www.glacierbayflightseeing.com/ Another day, we ... read more

Just returned from a 4 hour train ride through to the White Pass ...over the hill and on to the gold of the Yukon. It reaches nearly 3000ft and the views truly are spectacular. I suspect that this will be as high as I'll get on this trip . Mountains truly are awesome. A day or to ago sailing through an arrea of the Inside Passage Suzanne and I sat in an outdoor hottube on the 12 deck and enjoyed watching the sky line change. It was incredibly relaxing and we had some good visits with other passengers as well. I was talking with 3 young men ,cousins, who were with a family group of 19...all ages and from all over the USA , celebrating the grandparents 50th anniversary!! They were all having a good time. ... read more

We left the Hot Springs and drove back into ALaska. The terrain steadily changes, so sdoes the weather. Coming over White Pass into Alaska, it was socked in and very wet and cold. The lakes were still full of ice and lots of snow on the mountains. Once we got out of the pass and back to the coastline, it is much warmer. How do you like the great photo of Scratch"In" Alaska? Skagway is a cruise ship town. That means when the boats are in, the town is crawling with tourists. Not really our kind of place. But, we can not catch the ferry to Haines until Friday . We are taking a cruise trip down to Juneau tomorrow. It is a Glacier Tour. They spotted 7 humpback whales a couple of days ago. Our ... read more

Skagway Alaska, Thursday, August 8, 2008 As part of our cruise seven of us wanted to do the Klondike bike tour offered by Sockeye Cycle. Twice I called about the bikes and types that they rent as I have some disability with my left hand and need some accommodation. I wasn’t able to get any clear answers and they really made me feel like I was bothering them. Neither respondent told me that they have tandem bicycles to rent that could be solution to my problem. When I called the second time I wanted to book the trip directly with them but they told me I had to do it on-line they couldn’t take phone reservations. I then filled out the on-line form and sent it in. Seven days later, the night before we were leaving ... read more

Notre second arret eu ... read more

We arrived in Skagway at around 6am, fortuneately for us we did not need to be up that early, so like most days the customary sleep in occured. One of the good things about being here is that you get around 18hrs of sunlight so you are never really in a hurry to do things on the boat. Skagway is one of the tiniest towns i've ever seen the population averages around 800 residents, the day we arrived there were 3 other ships in port so the population jumped to almost 10,000 in a matter of hours. It's amazing to think tourism is the only way the residents of Skagway put food on the table the entire town is designed that way, must be very quiet in Winter. We had pre-arranged to go on tour of ... read more

Our last full day in Skagway started with getting the van loaded up, laundry and some last minute shopping. We bought a few more souvenirs and then had lunch at the Red Onion Saloon. The “girls” were leading tours upstairs into the brothel. They charged $5.00, which is what it cost the men in the late 1800’s to visit with them upstairs. The money was sent from the “crib” in a tube to the bartender who kept track of the girls. He had a doll for each of the girls and would lay the doll on it’s back when the girl was with a customer to show she was busy. We attended an opening of the Skagway Sculpture Gardens with Erol. There were several exquisite pieces on display in the garden, including a huge bronze bear ... read more

Skagway is an enigma. There are so many wealthy people here, yet to look around, most of what you see looks like poverty. There is abandoned and unlived in property everywhere and about half the houses that are lived in are shacks or extremely rundown. A great number of the employees here for the summer are foreign students. Most employers provide “housing” for these employees, which is often a run-down trailer in a campground, and in some cases tents. Dave and I walked through several campgrounds in the city and we saw lots of permanent type tents (white canvas on a platform with a tarp over the top. We noticed that some of these “tenants” leave food remnants outside their tents and then people wonder why there are more bear sightings this year. We picked up ... read more
