Needless to say, we slept-in this morning after a late night last night. Dave was “under the weather” and did not want to do much of anything, but it was such a beautiful day, sunny with no clouds in the sky, and I wanted to be outside. We had planned on doing the hike up to Lower Dewey Lake, which is a short but steep hike. Instead after lunch we drove downtown and treated ourselves to ice cream cones and drove to the harbor to eat them. Then we headed up the Dyea Road to the scenic overlook of Skagway and then to Smuggler’s Cove. While Dave “rested his eyes” in the car, I took some nice nature pictures along the beach. Usually there are seals and eagles around, but I did not see any today ... read more

A cloudy day, but no rain. Not bad for a day with a 70% chance of showers. A hike this morning up to the Gold Rush Cemetery and Reid Falls, yielded a surprise. As we were approaching the cemetery on the gravel road, a black bear suddenly appeared and stood looking at us. We were a good distance away and so I told Dave that we needed to turn around and go the other way. He had not seen the bear yet, but knew that something must be wrong. That’s when he looked straight ahead of us and the two of them just stared at each other, and then the bear turned to the side and walked away. He climbed over the railroad tracks and swam across the Skagway River. What a relief! It’s a little ... read more

Yesterday’s sun and warmth has been replaced today with a cold rain. We decided that we would drive over to Dyea (pronounced Die E). The ride to Dyea is on a twisting gravel road which is very well maintained and very scenic. Dyea was and actually still is the starting point for the Chilkoot Trail which took the stampeders to the Yukon Gold Rush. There are famous photos of the Chilkoot Trail, which shows hundreds of men, tied together, climbing a very steep mountain with heavy packs on their backs. Because men were showing up in Dawson City with no supplies, there was a famine there. The Canadian Government decided that each prospector needed a ton of supplies before they could enter Canada. The men needed to lug that ton of supplies up this mountain in ... read more

Leaving Whitehorse and the Alaska Highway behind, for the last time this trip, we traveled down Alaska Route 2, the South Klondike Highway toward Skagway. This drive is one of the most scenic drives in North America. The road follows lakes and streams as it winds through valleys and over the mountains. Emerald Lake is just that, a lake that looks like it is emerald green. It glistened today in the sunshine as we stopped to marvel at it’s wonder. Soon we came to “The Smallest Desert in the World”, the Carcross Desert. The area was once covered by a glacial lake. When the glacier retreated, the sand that was left behind is being constantly blown around by the winds off of Lake Bennett, and nothing will grow in it. Next stop was in the small ... read more

Our cruise itinerary was departure Vancouver 24 May 4.45pm through the Seymour Narrows, 25 May pilots disembarked and we continued on for 1 day at sea passing the Canadian boarder to the USA at 10.30pm. Arrived at Juneau Alaska on 26 May - we were in the Pacific Ocean that night, the Captain said when in the Ocean expect a bit of Motion which we did, 20 knot winds and fog. I didnt sleep but Barry did. Tuesday 27 May at Skagway - you will note that I have spelt Skaguay in two different ways but I think we are meant to write it with a 'w' but in the town it is written with a 'u'. In Skagway we took the White Pass Railway to the Summit which was another neat train ride - photos ... read more

Today we woke to be in Skagway. A pretty town pop 800 and a sunny day with no wind. The town sits at the mouth of a large valley that finishes at an inlet where we are berthed. The town is clean and all painted up in a recreation of a cowboy town including all the classic shopfronts and wooden sidewalks - only the cars and the bitumen road bought it into the 21st century. I don’t know this, but its an ideal movie set if that hasn’t already been done here at some time. Maurs found a quilt shop and bough some Alaska fabric. We met up with our dinner table friends at The Red Onion and we all had lunch. The Red Onion was an old 19th century brothel that is now a bar/pub. ... read more

Dylan and I are settling down now. We are in our second week, and work is going well. They tell me daily how much they appreciate me. If you are interested in where I am and what we are doing, please check out our web site at Frontier Excursions . I am the office manager. We take reservations, dispatch, pay the bills, etc. My friend Linda and four others are driver/guides on the tours. I've visited the local SBC the past two Sunday's. You can check out the information on them at Taiya River . The couple are home missionaries. We have morning service on Sunday and Bible study on Thursday night following a free meal. They are very nice people. I hope to get to know them better. The only problem I have is that ... read more

Just want to make a quick little note that we are in Skagway, Alaska now. Our phones are a not working as of now so we either have to resolve something with that company or get another one. Internet is a little limited for now but should be more easily accessible once all the shops are opened. Everyone here is gearing up for the season; making touch-ups on the paint and having all displays well displayed. I wiped the dust off a banister at the hotel today; it's a mess there but it's opening next week so it'll just have to transform. So, just wanted to state that our communications are somewhat down, but we'll get more accessible. When we can use my laptop we'll add the rest of the pictures and maybe make some notes ... read more

I arrived safely in Skagway, AK on Friday, April 25, 2008. It was a trying trip, but successful! God was true to His word and cared for us, even though our things were in sad shape. But then, they are just things! I was greeted warmly when I arrived. I have been given a cabin for now (probably moving into a small 5th wheel trailer this weekend), but I am warm, fed, clean and working! Dylan is fine. He was a little traumatized for a while, and still might be if he had to go near a U-haul truck again, but he is happy to be with Mom! By the third day in the truck, Dylan was ready for a change! It has rained every day we have been here, and it is cold, but the ... read more
