Our trip took us from Haines to Skagway by way of a 45 minute ferry ride. To drive, it would have been 350 miles, but the ferry covered the 15 waterway miles easily. Skagway is definitely a tourist town. Our ferry dropped us off between 4 huge cruise ships that had already docked. We were not going to be alone in this small town. We had a total of 2 1/2 hours before a scheduled train ride, so like everyone else, we shopped and then got something to eat. The town is set up to resemble an old gold mining town, complete with old time store fronts and boardwalks up and down their Main Street. Our train ride was a 3 hour ride to White Pass Summit, a 40 mile round trip up to an elevation ... read more

Riding… Day 9 Left our Historical Guest House in Whitehorse. Gassed up and did a couple of laps of the town to find the Suzuki dealer as we wanted to buy some brake pads. Eventually found it around 1km from our Guest House but after around 5kms of riding!. The parts guy there checked – no genuine pads but sold us a set of EBC aftermarket pads which when we checked didn’t fit. On checking with the parts guy & commandeering the EBC Catalogue we found the correct numbers which he couldn’t. Out of Whitehorse we retraced yesterday’s entry route for 70kms before getting onto a new route passed the historic town of Carcross making for the Canada USA border. Drizzling rain most of the way & very cold as we were at about 700 – ... read more

Geo: 59.4583, -135.314As promised the alarm sounded again at 5.45 am for another day of promise in Skagway. This was the home of the "long excursions".... Last time we tripped into the Yukon for the train ride - this time we were heading onto the water in a 20 man canoe! The trick on the early mornings is to co-ordinate a breakfast slot. There are lots of people converging on the "early" dining rooms at the same time. But we have it down pat now because on days when we do want to have breakfast, Mac heads to the fruit (always avoiding the fat lip apple) and juice and I zero in on some cereal. We avoid the tea and coffee (because toilet stops are unpredictable on shore) and are in and out of the dining room ... read more

Geo: 59.4583, -135.314This was a big day on shore. An eight hour adventure leaving from our port of Skagway. This little town stretches for seven blocks and features historic false-front shops and restaurants, wooden sidewalks and locals dressed in period costumes. This was the starting place for more than 40 000 gold rush stampeders who headed to the Yukon on their way to the Chilkoot Trail chasing the dream of gold. Today, it is the permanent year round home for 800 residents who host over 1 million tourists a year.Thank goodness the bloated sausage man fingers had improved because it was a day of border crossings today. We needed passport identification to get across the border back in to Canada and visit British Columbia and the Yukon Territory and then to get back into the U.S. ... read more

Although we hated to leave our "favorite campground" in Watson Lake, we headed out at 8:00am with plans to make Skagway by early afternoon. Just 60 miles out of Watson Lake, the scenery again became spectacular. Those reading this blog are probably saying "You've said that before." We'll be saying to each other, as we drive, OMG look at that. Then we come around another bend and say Oh my God, look at that! You could be taking pictures constantly here. Unfortunately, there are not a lot of turnoffs on this highway, so it's difficult to stop and take pictures. We did decide to stop and have lunch in Tagish, as we were going to be turning off the Alaska highway for our side trip down to Skagway, Alaska. We headed southwest, on Route 8 toward ... read more

Docked early in Scagway. Very low cloud everywhere - were thinking of doing the train to White Pass - but after getting off ship and talking to some people decided to do a small tour group by bus up to White Pass - train seemed a rip off $127.00 return, and the train travelled directly on the opposite side of the valley. So pleased we did the small group tour, there were eight of us, and we had a really (Harry Butler style!!) fantastic tour, Ron has lived up here for 15 years and is so into nature and the wild, treks a lot, he took us to the most amazing spots right up into the mountains, didn't see any bears but that was OK we had our bear fix down in Canada. Went for a ... read more

Friday June 6th, 10:24pm Skagway, Alaska Pictures are from Icy straight point. After a sleepless night I was not a fan of my alarm clock this morning but I dragged myself out of the rack and got ready for work. I have almost completely lost my voice so I wasn’t sure how I was going to stand on the pier and direct the moonballs to the busses today but I was ready to give it a whirl. I grabbed all the invoices and everything else I needed and headed for the pier. I was a little confused as I got outside as we were at a different pier today and I wasn’t quite sure where everything was. I bumped into Giorgi and got the scoop and it seemed like an easier dispatch from this pier, good ... read more

Day 38 - Friday August 23 Whitehorse, YT to Skagway, AK 104 miles We turned on to the Klondike Highway headed south the views again were beautiful. We passed Emerald Lake with rainbow-colors resulting from the blue-green light waves reflecting off the white sediment on the lake bottom. The pictures do not do it justice. We also passed Carcross Desert, Bove Island in Tagish Lake, the Yukon/British Columbia border and proceeded to the Alaska border. Before reaching the border we drove the windy roads through the rocky valley of Summit Lake and reached White Pass Summit (3290 ft.). To add to the adventure it was foggy again that day and our visibility around shear cliffs was about 75 feet. We crossed the Captain William Moore Bridge a unique cantilever bridge over Moore Creek spanning a 110 ... read more
