Hello to all and this is only a beginning of a journal. I am fine. This city is beautiful, clean and so friendly. I should have learned (or remembered) a little Spanish before I came here, but who would have guessed that it would be so quick! I'm not sure I want it to end in a couple of months! I read Spanish more than I can speak it, but then I can read French and Italian when I want to also. I have worked all day and some this evening so I'm tired now. I will try to make a real journal for all to see of my 'adventures'. Love to all. Patt... read more

Yesterday I jogged on to the beach and went swimming before taking my plane at 1pm. Then I took the local "Ryanair" flight to Mexico. So: I landed 1.5 hours from the city, had to take a bus to town, but ofcource way out of public transport, so I had to walk and then take the Metro, all this with Backpack and at rush hour, The metros are reallllllyyyyy packed at rush hour people push themselves into the metro and the doors give the last push, ummmfff! So by the time I got to the Hotel it was 7pm! Yesterday, I must say I was a bit down, a bit lonely, fed up that everything is expensive ... read more

One thing about travel is the novelty of it - the newness of situations and places you encounter - from larger things like the architecture of cities, the language, the food, the people in general, the historical sights and natural wonders, to little things - the bathrooms, the sidewalks, crossing the street, and with longer term travel how the novelty wears off after a while. When encountering the new, your mind is ablaze - new ideas, feelings, coping mechannisms and at times you long for a bit of routine, but then I find you want the new again - maybe explains those like me addicted to travel - or is it just addiction to novelty - getting quickly bored, if the mind or senses not stimulated by ideas or nature or just something simple that is ... read more

Started this entry yesterday morning in Campeche which now seems light years ago. Today I went to a small beach town - Progresso - about 25 km from here - Merida - on the gulf of Mexico. Not a spectacular beach but was nice and very low key - it is mainly a place where Meridians go for the day on weekends and in summer with a few North American retirees so is pretty low key and empty - no high rises or resorts lining the beach, no crowds in bikinis (besides it was cloudy and cool for the area) - just a simple town with a beach with a few restos and stores across the street. Had forgotten how calming the ocean is - the gulf is normally very flat, but with the wind, there ... read more

After kicking back on Isla for about 3 weeks decided to head out to Merida in the Yucatan as well as Progresso on the Gulf. We used a 2nd class bus (segundo) from Cancun to Merida, taking about 7 hours and visiting every Tom, Dick and Harry type town along the way. This is the way we like to travel i.e. seeing folks and places along the way rather then barreling through. Have to say though, Merida was a welcome site. Merida, as a Spanish city, started with its´ conquest by Francisco de Montego. Prior to this, it was the Mayan city of T¨ho. Upon entering the city, the conquerors were reminded of the Roman architecture which remained in Merida, Spain, hence the name. We enjoyed the modern Merida for its¨, music, architecture and art.... read more

Blogger Doug Merida used to be the colonial capital of Mexico. Nowadays it is the starting point for most expeditions into the Yucatan Pennisula. We had a day to ourselves today to do as we please. We walked from our hotel into the city centre and went to the Governors house, home to some awesome murals depicting the life and struggle of the mayans. They were huge and amazingly painted. We then checked out the modern art museum and jumped on the open top bus and headed up to the Anthropolical Museum. This was a really great place to learn and view some of the key mayan artifacts still in Mexican possession. I was very impressed by this small museum. Most was translated into English which made it all accessible to us non Spaniards. We ... read more

ISLA MUJERES We flew into Cancun on February 6th and immediately hot-footed (boated actually) over to Isla Mujeres (Island of Women) where beautiful beaches and torrential rains greeted us. It is uncertain where the name of this island originated. Some believe Spanish buccaneers stashed their women here, others believe that the conquerors discovered a stone temple with clay figurines of Mayan goddesses and others that Isla was a stopover for the Mayans on their route to worship their goddess of fertility on Cozumel. Given the number of sunning tourists on its´beaches this is definitly a well named island.... read more

Decided to stay two extra days in Merida - am off to Campeche tommorow. It is much cooler and a bit rainy today which I like. Carnaval has begun and the first large parade is tonight! I'm sure it will be a bit crazy as Merida seems to know how to organize public events with music everynight, shut down streets and the like. I stayed to see this parade and also cause I was to lazy to leave yesterday. Realize I like being in the know and also being the one to tell others where things are and what is happening and have begun to do that. More in my comfort zone though of course I still stare blankly when people start speaking Spanish and attempting to converse after my one question that I have memorized ... read more
