Will have two blogs on this date. One separately of the 4th of July party at Buddy's in Progreso so my new friends there can see their pictures and not have to read my other stuff that I share with y'all. Not so sure I'll endorse DHL anymore. Remember I had told y'all that I had mailed two boxes (totalling 22 lbs) to myself from Texas to the tune of $339.00 US dollars. The boxes got to Merida before my plane did, but I still haven't gotten them! 9 days now. They are holding them hostage for taxes. Now want $490.00 US more! $4900.00 pesos! The US DHL office is now ignoring me too so I haven't gotten resolution. Will probably have them returned to Beaumont but don't know since states won't answer. Will update ... read more

4th of July in Progreso Yucatan Mexico! North America » Mexico » Yucatán » Merida By PattusaJuly 8th 2007Patt Barrington What a party! Even though no one told the owner til the last minute! He did wonderful! Food buffet included ribs, baked beans, hot dogs, potato salad, pickle slices (which you don't see much here) and real salt and pepper (not common either). There were other things but this is what I got! Have pictures developed (I'm getting better at this) but will not try to place name with all the photos. I suck at taking pictures and remembering names! Passed aroun... read more

Back from vacation! North America » Mexico » Yucatán » Merida By Pattusa July 1st 2007 Patt Barrington My troubadour for only $1 USDBack from vacation! Isn't that a wild thing to say? I go home to Texas for two weeks to take care of business, but really I partied almost the whole time, and now I come back to the Yucatan to work and enjoy!! I managed to see so many friends this trip down (or I guess up). I'm not going to attempt to name everyone for fear of leaving someone out and there's simply not enough blog space! Did manage to go to all my favorite watering holes (including private homes). The Alibi's party on the 21st was great. Wish all of you could have made it. George came in from a fast ... read more

Since I didn't convince Manoli to do another tour, the ruins of Uxmal, today was pretty much a chill and do nothing day. First we went further downtown to the main market, where they had dozens and dozens of booths selling meat, fruit, vegetables, handicrafts and anything else you can imagine. Next, we decided to head uptown to the ritzy district and check out the local Wal-Mart. Very different in both appearance and products from the stores back in the U.S. We bought a bunch of local fruit; papaya, mango, watermelon, cantelope, oranges, pineapple, and a strange guanabana. We also got two types of local cheeses and bread. The manchego cheese was almost goopy by the time we returned to the hostel and the gonela or somesuch as very sharp and pretty much inedible. We ... read more

Had a couple of inquiries about Belize tonight, so thought I'd share. Rodger Christopher, from Beaumont, has properties in Belize and one is a rental. http://sitteeriverlodge.com/index.html is the website. He's a dive master, hiker, super hyped guy and still loves me when I drink all the beer in the village (which isn't much - the beer or the village). But he definitely knows the areas to take you to! He can take you fishing if you want too, and if I'm there, I'll be the deckhand ! Reality is that Sittee River Village is in the middle of the country, in the jungle, and is an experience on it's own. Rodger can do the dive / fishing things off the coast though too. Y'all might know him as owner of Gulf Coast Dive shop on Dowlen ... read more

We left our hotel and boarded the 7:45 ADO bus to Merida. The 1st Class tickets cost just over $20 US each. Although a direct route with no stops, the trip took a boring 4 hours. When we arrived at the Merida station, we got directions to our hostel and decided it was better to pay the $3.00 cost of a taxi than to drag our luggage 14 blocks. Arriving at our hostel, Hostal Nomadas, we checked in, paid our bill of fifty some dollars for the 3 nights and deposited our luggage in our room. After getting the lowdown on hammocks (supposedly Merida is THE best place to get one), we headed out. We made the mistake of stopping at a hammock shop before going to the recommended place and had to listen to ... read more

Day 35, Thursday 28 June 2007 - Palenque to Merida, travel day. Not a whole lot to report today. We had a 9 hour bus trip from Palenque to Merida. Should have only been 8 hours, but the heavy rain and lightening delayed us by an hour. Also made it a bit uncomfortable for some people on the bus, as the bus leaked badly!!! Still, we managed ok. The only excitement on the trip was being stopped on the boarder by the army. They stop all travellers and take you and all your stuff off the bus and search your bags. You´re not allowed to take photos of them, so the only ones I´ve got were snuck through the windows of the bus! They are looking for any artefacts and luckily didn´t find any on ... read more

Scroll down for photos or click on one of them and click slideshow. That helps. I love this website to keep me up to date with y'all. If anyone makes a comment (funny or thoughtful) I think you can read them too at the bottom of each blog. I've had a couple. If anyone perfers to not get the blog, please let me know and I'll take you off distribution. Not a problem.
