Flight that Richy booked on the internet in Spanish whilst in Canada was boarded without a hitch ... *phew*! Yet more surprises... Mexico City must have one of the nicest, efficient domestic terminals in the developing world... one and a half hours later, we landed to 40 degC, 80% humidity - significantly hotter than high Mexico City (or as San would say: "Wah lau! hot until can die.... walking hot, sleeping hot, eating hot... everything picante!" She takes about 3 to 4 showers a day just to try and cool off!). Merida, Yucatan is the land of Haciendas (Old manufacturing communes), Quaint streets, Siestas, heaps of Mayan ruins (including the grand ChiChen-Itza and the elegant Uxmal) and what Richy came for .... Having left the guys early in the morning to get back to Mexico in time to avoid spending the night in Chetumal I don´t really remember any of the journey (other than the fact that I slept for the whole way and always had lots of space on the bus...could have been because I smelt?!) Caught the bus to this tiny little remote town south of Tulum called Mahahual. Again, it is meant to be amazing to dive there as the reef has loads of wrecks which are easily dived. This is what I had planned to do but when I arrived I discovered that there were no hostels in the town...only a few expensive hotels or really shabby beach cabanas, which when you are on your own were still fairly expensive...anyway, so I decided that ... read more

Said goodbye to Cheryl at Tulum bus station, and while she headed to Playa del Carmen for a week with Mark, I headed to Merida.. planning for a week of culture and Spanish lessons and spending less money :) .. I did do a few hours of Spanish lessons with a teacher from CIS, and managed to fit in a bit of culture (well a couple of galleries, a museum if that counts!.. and there's lots of free events at the cultural centre here, so have been to watch a few random things.. such as a Belgian film with Spanish subtitles, and some traditional Catalan dancing! .. hmm a deserate way to try and fill time, or making the most of what's free.. i'm not sure!) BUT met lots of nice people, so spent most of ... read more

After Chichen Itza we went to the largest city up to now on our travels, Merida. It was a nice enough place and for me just a larger version of Valladolid but a bit cheaper which is always nice! The first day didn’t start to well as the bus dropped us off at a bus station not on the map, so took us a while to find our bearings and then even longer to find some accommodation because it fell on a weekend. After about 2 hours of walking around in similar heat you are getting at home but with a heavy back pack! In the end we got lucky and found a lovely place. It was an old colonial house, which from the outside looked nothing special, but in the center was a luscious green ... read more

We left Tulum and decided to go to Valladoloid so we could see Chitchen Itza and go check out some more cenotes. We arrived and found a really nice hostel although as it was a Hostelling International one it was a bit dry... Anyway, just as we were looking out the window we saw some English guys who we´d met in San Cristobal and Palenque, and it turned out that Henry A had actually worked with one of them (Ben) last summer which was pretty wierd but cool That evening we went for a few beers and a meal on the square but took it fairly easy as we were hoping to get up early to go to Chitchen Itza before the hoards of American day trippers from Cancun. We overslept so missed the first bus ... read more

moved on from campeche to merida after seeing the pyramids at uxmal along the way...stood at the top of the biggest temple and looked over the yucatan peninsula was majorly impressive. ma espanol is still shit but have met loads more english speakers at the youth hostels which is cool. including a german called frank who works at german school for the minted kids of the mexican upper class. random the divide here tho is very obvious between the have and the have nots....the villages you pass thru on the way to the tourist sites sum up the word dead end... a road a taco stall some fields and houses still built from palm thatch and wattle and daub. compared to this are brand new toyota 4x4s rolling through the streets of merida. weather any good ... read more

We departed Playa del Carmen and caught the 7.30am bus, and made our way to Merida. On route to Merida, we stopped to have a look at the ruins in Chichen Itza. The ruins are very impressive, on on a big site. In the main part is a huge temple, and if you stand around the temple and clap your hands, the peak of the temple makes the noise of a bird. Im not sure if this was a design or coincidence ( my research in to the Mayans has been totally nothing ), but its pretty impressive nonetheless. There is also a huge court where they had the Mayan Ball game, it was good to see this as it actually would have been, after seeing the show in Xcaret in Playa. The site was very ... read more

Friday 3rd June 2005 : To Merida As Rory has difficulty swallowing tablets I tried the pharmacy for soluble B1. All he offered me were multivitamins which were not soluble. Is it my accent ? I did not even try asking for soluble chloroquine. Bought tickets to Merida. I spoke Spanish while the clerk replied in English, somewhat surreal but I got the correct tickets. Caught the bus OK. Arrived at Merida and followed the directions to The Nest without a hitch. They did not have a private room available so we had 4 beds in a very tall two-tier 6-bed dorm, each bed with its’ own light and fan. Attractive, modern style in an old building. Lots of metal fittings, spiral staircases and tons of light - plus a small pool. Owen and I found ... read more
