Well, we finally made it to Stone Island. and we will be here for 4 months. It is a true paradise but it was a real journey to get here. I left off on my last blog we were in Queen Valley, AZ. We had a great time there, but we got anxious to get on our way to Mexico. We went to some fun places in Arizona, like Tortilla Flats, and Goldfield Ghost Town. The desert is beautiful and we both really enjoyed it. We met Barry and Sonja in Phoenix, which is a huge city and we were glad to leave......and to be on our way to our destination. When I arrived, by night, in Mazatlan I had a bit of troubles in finding a place to stay, cause I found a guesthouse on my guide but it was temporarily closed and I had to ask someone for a closeby stay and finally I found a motel in the interior of the city. I was worried to walk searching for a place to stay at night in a state like Sinaloa which is not probably the safest part of the country but at the end I had no issues and safely got to my place. This is a Pacific Coast city with fine colonial buildings and a lovely "Malecon" promenade with a prestine beach about 13 km long. After departing from our private hotel in Isla de Las Piedras (Stone Island) we set out to search for food. We were told to drive about five minutes down the road to get to the *center* of town. I seriously could of walked there in five minutes and it turned out to be more like a string of restaurants. I also use the term restaurants very loosely. They are places to eat with a sand floor and makeshift roofs with open sides. No complaints here though as this leads to a beautiful view of the ocean as well as a nice warm breeze! It began like any of our other road trips... While packing our bags we remembered a hotel room was in order. I finished the packing while Erika booked us a room online. "This one has good reviews," she yelled from her mother's computer. "Book it!" I replied. And with those two words, the story begins... With the trunk full of our things and the car loaded with gas we were off for a few days in Mazatlan! The views from the newly opened autopista were amazing. The three hours flew by as I stared out the window at the dramatic scenery! Around 4:30 in the afternoon we arrived to central Mazatlan. We had planned to spend Semana Santa (Holy Week) at Hacienda Contreras in Mexico's interior because for the five years we have been wintering in Mexico we have been warned that the beaches would be swarmed by unruly Mexicans and that our lives would be endangered if we were anywhere near popular Mexican vacation destinations. But Ray had an episode at Hacienda Contreras that we thought warranted an early departure to Mazatlan where he could obtain medical attention if necessary. We left Mazamitla Thursday morning. By the time we got to Mazatlan festivities celebrating Jesus's death and resurrection were filling the streets with music and fun. Lunes, (Monday) 12 Marzo we drove north to Mazatlan and are settled back in at Mar Rosa RV Park. We love this place. We first stumbled in here in 2001. We spent a few days here again in 2009 on our east-west todo las playas (all the beaches) tour. Last year we were here for about two weeks hoping Ray’s back would recover. Mazatlan has about a dozen RV parks and like everywhere in Mexico, each park has their devotees. Martes, (Tuesday) 13 Marzo we visited Isla de la Piedra (Stone Island). We caught the bus from just south of our RV park to downtown Mazatlan. The group split up a little and we followed Ray and Marsha into Mazatlan. We stayed at a lovely Campground on the beach, pricey, but nice. We walked to an area called the Golden Zone and Bar called Twisted Mamma’s. On the way we stopped at an ATM and discovered that Ed had left his ATM card in the last ATM machine a few days ago. We settled in and started on some serious Margaritas! OMG! The bartender sets the glass on the bar with the ice, then he starts with the tequila, count: 1..2..3..4..5..6..7…8…9..10, then the Cuantro: 1..2..3..4..5.., then it is just one lime or 2? Danger Danger! They were too good! We were in serious trouble. Let’s just say, I remember the first 5….The problem was the more I drank, the more I drank! ... read more

The No Tell Motel Red and I left the ferry at 12:30 and set off south and east on highway 15. I had printed out Google maps directions complete with the photos of the intersections, but quickly found out that the aren't very helpful in Mexico. There are two problems. The first is that street signs are mostly non-existent in Mexico. The second is that the pictures Google supplies rarely helped me to identify an intersection. Trying to look back and forth at the picture and the view out the windshield was very difficult to do because of the speed you are traveling and the need to watch the traffic like a hawk. I do believe the 60th celebrations are coming to an end...maybe... This round had to meet the following criteria . Easily accessible , affordable , beach , sunshine , all inclusive and manageable with Shirley's work schedule. Riu Emerald Bay in Nuevo Mazatlan fit the bill . Leaving at 8 am on Feb 25 it was -39C and arriving at the hotel at 2pm that afternoon to a welcoming shot of Tequilla and +27C was a great start . Our room was on the 9th floor with a great balcony perfectly placed for watching the sunset . It reminded me of the view in Netanya last year. We enjoyed the beach and 2 trips into Mazatlan . Friday, Jan 21st: We are currently in Mazatlan. We broke camp at Celestino on Tuesday. Bill & Jane and Pat & Gord rolled out early with Paul, Terry, Ray and I following a couple hours later. We all had planned to meet up here at the Mar Rosa Campground on the beach in Mazatlan. They stopped to shop. We got here earlier. We thot we’d been ditched. We were just getting settled when our amigos showed up. What a reunion! Paul and Terry left yesterday (Thursday) to head inland to Santa Maria del Oro which Terry loves. The location is very popular with Mexican families on weekends so they wanted to get settled before the road in became too crowded. Terry and I hugged. It was hard to split up. Here is the web site.
