Wednesday, March 18, 2015 As always, Todd is up and earlier (5:15am) to work on his computer before everyone else. Since this is my first morning on the ship, I needed to find a location on the ship that was quiet and where is a power source. Instead of going to the Piazza, I decided to head up to the Horizon Café. There is a coffee and the buffet should be slow. I was able to locate a place to hunker down for a while. It was quite peaceful, though I could not see outside because it was still too dark. I returned to the room around 7:00 am to get everyone up early. We were going to our first port, everyone else’s second port, Mazatlán. After everyone was up, dressed, and ready to go, we ... read more

Jan 25th to February 2nd 2015 Mazatlan sun beach and Tequila. Very hot, lots of history but a city not a town to socialize with the locals. The costs of Restaurants, hotels and anything you buy much higher than Canada even with the dropping Canadian dollar. BUT the market is the place to shop.... read more

As told through my daughter: I was too young to see the obvious differences in our lives, but old enough to know how I felt about her. I loved when my mom brought me to play at Janeth's house. Her house was so different than mine and that made it exciting and fun; an adventure. Janeth's house always smelled so good. Her mom would be busy in the kitchen making tortillas, mashing avocados, slicing onions and cilantro. It was the most delicious Mexican food I'd ever eaten. I loved her tiny bedroom, just big enough to hold her bed, dresser and a window with a sun-catcher of a butterfly dangling. There was a hole in the wall, big enough to peek my head through and see into her brother's room. Janeth and her brother would shout ... read more

Well, 2015.......where has the year gone. We have been here on Stone Island for 2 months as of the 4th of January. People ask us, "so what do you do all day?" Well, sometimes we can't even answer that as we just don't do anything, except Gerry fishes, or we read our books, go for a walk on the beach, or visit with our friends here in the RV park. Other days we go over to Barry and Sonja's and visit or grocery shop, or just walk around Mazatlan. These last two weeks Bob and Ilse have been here. It has been great being with them. We had Christmas with them at Barry's and also New Years Eve. Lots of laughing and of course some drinking and great conversations. Thanks Barry and Sonja for your hospitality ... read more

In two days it will be a whole month that we have been on the island. And on the 10th of December we have been away from home for two months. Sometime we have to pinch ourselves to see if it is all a dream. The weather has turned very pleasant and the bugs are less. Not altogether gone, but less. Most days we have a slight breeze, so it keeps the bugs away. They still come out between 5 and 6:30pm, so normally we just go inside for that time. Tonight we are going to BBQ the second fish that Gerry and Barry caught. It is called a Bonito. Never tasted it before and all the locals eat it, but it is a oily fish so we will see. Last Sunday we went in Barry's ... read more

Well we have been here two weeks. Sometimes it feels like we just got here and other times the days just run into each other. It is definitely a much slower pace than I am use to. Also there isn't a lot to do here on the island. When you are use to working everyday and then all of a sudden you are not, it takes a bit to get use to. Everyday the vegetable man comes with his veggies and fruit. Which is really great because they are always fresh. Bananas (which I never eat at home), but they taste delicious here, avocados which are so good. Also he comes with pears and apples also. Sometimes they are really good, other times not so.... We experienced our first set of cruise ships this last week. ... read more

We didn't do much more than move hotels on Saturday....On Sunday we made up for our laziness: Flea Market (Lynn), Seahawks game (Bill), swimming (Lynn), and hike to the Faro (lighthouse) (both of us). The tianguis, or flea market on Sundays takes over a web of streets in the Juarez district, a 15 minute bus ride away from our hotel...it was great fun to stroll past vendor after vendor, looking for something to catch my eye...I ended up with a shirt for Bill, and a top for me, and some drinking glasses to replace the styrofoam cups they use in the this hotel...I asked a vendor about the bus back, and she was very helpful, sending her daughter with me to help me ID the correct bus...There were only 4 other gringoes in the whole market, ... read more

Mazatlan appears to be one of the fittest cities we've visited outside the States. There are hundreds of people running, walking, cycling, and roller blading along the malecon every morning and evening. There are open air cross fit and aerobics classes. There are people (old people!) swimming laps across the immense bay. There is a body-builder public open air gym on the malecon. There are people doing yoga on the beach and mothers pushing strollers while roller-blading! Large groups of teens come down and ride the waves every day after school. There is almost no litter on the streets and beaches...and yesterday a crew was washing down the malecon with soapy water and brushes! The cleanup work seems to be a collaboration between the city and volunteers. On Wednesday night we ate the old Mazatlan institution, ... read more

Well we have been here a week as of today. The weather is changing slightly, so it isn't as hot and the humidity is getting less. We have done quite a bit this week. We did some exploring to another part of the island. We went to a parade, we went over on the panga twice to Mazatlan, we shopped in the big stores (Sam's Club, Mega, Walmart) saw a schooner come into port. Did my laundry by hand and hung it out on a drying rack. Found lots of treasures on the beach. Went to a doctor (for Gerry...he has Montezuma's revenge ). The doctor checked him over and gave him a prescription for some antibiotics and the total including medication was 922 pecos, which is approximately $90 Canadian. If we were in the US ... read more

On Monday, after a great afternoon and evening spent with family, we checked into an airport hotel...and awoke Tuesday morning at 4:30am to leave for Mazatlan... We got to our hotel here in old Mazatlan around 2 pm, and unpacked and napped. We were awoken by music blasting from a car; not unexpected since there is a cruising street between us and the beach... We decided to walk down to the beach and then along the malecon, which stretches for 21 kilometers and is the longest in the world! I took a quick dip, but couldn't swim since the waves were really big this afternoon.... We decided to eat in the restaurant attached to our hotel (built in 1956 and dedicated to Jack Kerouac) and found out they host karaoke on Tuesday night...A strange scene, watching ... read more
