Tänään on sitten illalla bileet! Jatkan taas myöhemmin kun jotain uutta ilmenee.... read more

I am now in Mazatlan. My stupid flight got cancelled but it was alright, I slept in the airport and flew out at 6:30 Monday morning and arrived in Mazatlan at 3:00ish. It was so nice to see Roland and JoAnn when I got off the plane. They are so lovely and I am very happy I got to stay with them, and have them show me around. So we drove home and they showed me their house and we went out for dinner at Ponchos, and had the best food in my life. Such good guacamole and salsa and re-fried beans mmmm... Anyway then we went to the Purple Onion for some drinks and listemed to the band. The next day we went to Playa Bruha and saw the fishermen bring in the lobsters and ... read more

Moikka!

Pam and I have done a fair amount of walking the barrios of bahia kino, Alamos and Mazatlan and this is a small sample of the glorious and historical buildings that we have seen and felt. Being around such magnificent homes and buildings you begin to feel their age and the experiances that they have gone thru. Some day I would love to sit down with all of these structures and hear all the stories that they could unfold. I am sure there would be no novelist who could hold a candle to the mysteries that are buried in the paint and mortar of the past. The new buildings of Mexico could surely win hundreds of awards for design and new inovation, but they will never match the simple beauty of colonial home that is three ... read more

The Season is very understated compared to our retail bombardment. Part of it could be that we don't watch much TV or listen to radio but even the stores and malls are not overwhelmed by it. There is still a stronger focus on the Birth than the gift giving frenzy though many feel that the traditions are getting lost. The Mexican people start Christmas on the 16th of December which is when Posada ( the journey) begins. This represents the travels of Mary and Joseph and their ultimate need to find a place for Mary to give birth. Posada parties are held at schools, public centres, private homes any and every day during the 8 days preceding the 24th. Our neighbour and landlord had a Posada party and kindly invited us. He told us a few ... read more

Seasons Greetings from Mazatlan! We would like to send the best of the holiday wishes to our family and friends at home. We are hearing of the nasty weather you are all experincing back home and thought we would send some warm pictures to you all. In hopes of lowering the goose bumps a little and warming your hearts. We went for dinner last night and meet the most wonderful young girl selling roses to the patrons, now normally we would say "no gracias" and send her on her way . This young girl touched both Jeff and I with her warm nature and smart selling technic. She walked up to our table and touched Jeffs shirt pocket in order to get him to look down and when he did she tweeked his nose, she looked at him ... read more

We traveled from Alamos on the 10th of Dec ,racking up around 526km in a day. As the Mexican holiday of Virgin of Gaudalupe lands on the 12th ,we wanted to be settled on the holiday instead of fighting traffic. We found a park on the main drag right on the ocean the Mar Rosa , but decided after one night it was too noisey being right on the Zona Dorado ( Gold zone). We found a park two blocks off the main road the San Bartolo with grass instead of sand..... LOL Never thought that I 'd ever say that I won't want to be in the sand. The park has about half and half Canadian and USA residents,we still hold the puppy award "the youngest people in the park". The first day here one ... read more

We don't feel very qualified to discuss the entertainment options in general because there are many options not appealing to us. So this is a review of the places we have tried and liked. Our house is between the Gold Zone (tourist area) and Old Town (historic center). Both areas have many restaurants so we are taking it upon ourselves to try as many as possible in both areas. There are thousands of eating places from street level to 5 star. Most have entertainment. The Mexican people are so musical that it is rare to find a place to eat where live music is not available. We are quite a lot closer to Old Town and are drawn to the ambiance of the place since most of the restaurants are housed in the historic older buildings. ... read more

Amigos de los Animales written by Carol How long can you sit on the beach, read and walk around town? For the second year now I have volunteered to help at the animal shelter. There is no dog pound, SPCA or Humane Society in Mazatlan. There is only the Amigos de los Animales. They run an adoption centre and take in animals found on the street. The summer was not too good for the Amigos because they lost their on-site vet and funding got very slim. Mostly the organization is funded by donations from both Mexican and foreign residents. When the foreigners head north for the summer, so does alot of the funding. Right now the Amigos are down to two paid employees. I cannot figure out how to explain how much work this is for ... read more

Habla Espanol? Bill is very good at exploring the neighbourhood. He enjoys walking around and noticing which services are offered and where. We do spend a lot of time walking. Our other most common form of transportation is local bus. Once you know the basic routes of the various buses it is much preferable to driving. The taxis and pulmonias ( small jeep like open air vehicles unique to Mazatlan) are reasonably priced and we use them at night. We were given a set of Learn Spanish in your car on CD and we faithfully listened and repeated all of Lesson 1 on the journey here. Now we are continuing to play and advance through the lessons, at a very slow pace, but it is helpful. We are hoping to find affordable Spanish lessons here ... read more
