We made it to Puerto Escondido, just south of Oaxaca City! We went a different route (Rte. 175) than the tour books and busses take (Rte. 131), only because we had people from both sides recommend it. It only took six hours instead of 8-10! If we were to fly, it would’ve taken us ½ an hour. The road itself was windy and twisty, lots of potholes, landslides, and to make matter worse, people wanting to drive fast just because they’re used to the road. One time we came around a corner, only to find a tractor-trailer on its side, another tractor-trailer trying to pull him out of the way, and a third heavy-duty tractor waiting to flip him over. The twisty, windy road over the mountains took its toll; not only on David, but after ... read more

My last morning in Mazunte was spent eating a yummy fruit crepe, feeding 'my' starving street dog some fresh meat, and saying good bye to my new friend, Paulo. After that, it was hasta luego Mazunte! Had arranged a taxi to pick me up and off we went. The scenery was beautiful for the next hour to PE. Got dropped off at the Towerbridge Hostal. Dedided that it smelled too much like mildew, so off I went in search of a nicer place. Found a wonderful 'homebase' for the next three days at the Hotel Mayflower. I was on the third floor, with ocean view, spacious villa like lounge to lounge in, and open deck. I felt like a queen. I was a block from all the activity in the Principle Playa area. There were all ... read more

After escaping the rain and car chases, i headed south for more hours then i had anticipated.. thus lacking food for quite sometime. The sun was hot, tanned bodies everywhere (adly not mine) and the waves were out.. so what better thing to do then swim. The water was really warm, when you get out... you start sweating almost immediately.... so its better just to stay in the water. The following day i rented a surfboard and headed off for a 30min hike down the beach to a safer place to surf ( the main beach is really rough). Time got away for me, and without realising how long i had been in the water, the burn started to hurt... this got worse with the 30min (which felt like and hour) walk back to the main ... read more

The Bus Journey The overnight bus journey wasnt too bad, when we got on the bus a little girl probably around 7 years old was sitting in my seat, so i had to use my best spanish to say my seat and show her whos boss, after bullying a small child out of a seat I started to watch Twilight in Spanish, which I assume I found more interesting than if it was in English, I managed to sleep for the majority of the journey, though we were sat right by the toilets and got a disgusting whiff everytime someone opened the door. Puerto Escondido We were greeted at our hostel by an empty front desk, and walked around for a bit and managed to find the cleaner, who spoke no English and seemed to ... read more

So after all the talk of going to Veracruze City..... we didn't. Having spoken to fellow travellers about our hostel and the staff we decided that in the direction of Oaxaca was where we would travel, but we didn't even end up there. In the end we decided on a fairly remote little surfing area know as Puerto Escondido and it was a good choice. We travelled there via night bus in a 12 hour trip from Mexico City which was a little bit hairy as we were all suffering from the squits and trying to make it to the toilet whilst the coach driver is driving like he's in a sports car can lead to some potentially compromising situations. But we made it! Down here seemed a world apart from Mexico city with so much ... read more

We decided to leave Oaxaca after Day of the Dead as we were missing the beach, and we wanted to see the surfing resort of Puerto Escondido. We took the collectivo from Oaxaca, which was rumoured to take around 6 hours, covering a distance of near 250km. We booked our ticket for 150 pesos which we thought was quite a good price. In total the bus journey actually took around 8 hours, and was extremely uncomfortable as the roads were windy and up in the mountains. There were so many pot holes that we did not reach speeds faster than 30mph for pretty much the whole journey. Near the end of the journey it started to rain, and with the conditions of the road, and the fact that there was evidence of recent mudslides, it was ... read more

Saturday 18th September We grabbed a quick coffee and settled our bill with Marianna and waited for our taxi which was late and we had only 20 minutes left until our bus left Pochulta. The next 15 minutes was a blur as the taxi driver was trying to make up for being late and was gunning it along the windy roads trying to get us to the bus station on time. It doesnt help with the speed bumps every mile but nevertheless we made it with time to spare. Its only another hour drive by bus to Puerto Escondido and we arrive in no time at all observing the dramatic change in scenery as we went. Its a beutiful hot and sunny day today and we jumped into a taxi and showed the hostel address to ... read more

We climbed onto our Express minibus service from Oaxaca with 14 other people at 10:00am, bound only for Puerto Escondido it said on the windscreen. It was a reasonably comfortable bus, but this time there were no frills such as on-board toilets or drop down TV screens. This time the Mexican movie was replaced by a Oaxaacan radio station whose reception faded in and out as we drove along. The Oaxacan state roads department has seemingly decided that the cheapest technology to keep drivers speed in check is to introduce speed bumps everywhere. Incredibly this includes the highway too and so as we drove out of Oaxaca, we had to keep slowing down to go over the next speed bump. Once we got out into the country and on to the winding roads of the hills, ... read more

Imagine trying to sleep on a roller coaster - well, the night bus to Puerto Escondido was just like that ! Nine hours of twists and turns and a multitude of speed bumps: the journey lived up to its reputation of being one helluva ride ! Luckily enough, Sharon had had plenty of ginger biscuits to keep her travel sickness at bay. Still, we had made it to the beach where there would be plenty of time for sleeping We arrived at 6am and took a short taxi ride to Zicatela beach, an internationally renowned surfers paradise. We stumbled upon Cafecito, a very popular hangout for breakfast and watched as the town slowly woke up. It felt like being in Manly, with the early morning joggers and the surfers studying the waves, we felt at home ... read more
