We drove over the mountains and across the land to put our snow toes in the sand! We are on the beach at Puerto Escondido after a short stop for lunch at Puerto Angel. The waves are big, which Chuck thinks is great, Leila is very afraid! Beers are fifty cents, it costs about a dollar a day to shower, we are sleeping in the van and having a great time skipping winter. Cheers to all of you stuck in the snow. Next we will travel east along the coast towards Chiapas.... read more

Hi all, Wanted to say hi! and tell you about our Sam & Adele adventure we embarked upon today!!! We decidied to try and go to a remote beach which we had been told is beautiful, we saw it as we landed in Puerto airport from the plane! It has been a funny day! We began by getting off the bus at a Sign for Puerto Suelo Beach, to a dirt track that is about i would say 3 miles long, managed to hich a lift from a farmer (we think!) in the back of his pick up truck! He dropped us off as far as he was going and told us to walk another Kilometer down a track, the first lagoon we came to we decided to paddle through, the next one we waded! up ... read more

Here I am again, back on a warm sandy beach. Well, technically I am sitting by the pool, but why split hairs eh? Last Monday I headed back to Oaxaca to meet up with Ruth and plan our diving vacation. As it turns out, our diving vacation has now brought me back to Puerto Escondido. I know you are all pretty sad that I can’t send you pictures of yet another sunny Mexican or Belizian beach, but that will have to wait for next time. Belize was soon scrapped in favour of a closer and cheaper idea, and then Cozumel, though closer and cheaper and full of amazing diving options, was scrapped due to its high number of cruiseship tourists. Puerto Escondido is much more our pace, as in there isn’t really much of a pace, ... read more

After five or so days in Acapulco we hit a small but popular surf town called Puerto Escondido. For a couple of days we lounged on the beach, played some frisbee (which the local dogs really took a liking too) and did some swimming. We saw some huge surf down the beach and there was actually a surf competition going on that weekend. A really beautiful chill town with some good restaurants and nice people. Just watch out for those damn roosters that cant tell time and make their stupid rooster noices at all hours. Wish I had a pellet gun. The southwest coast of Mexico is spectacular and we're starting to not get hassled as much. And by "as much" I mean someone only tries to sell you something every five minutes on the beach ... read more

You all know I love you but this is going to be a short one because, well, because I am three feet from a hot sandy beach with crashing waves and I have better things to do! So It was a crazy last two weeks in Oaxaca, which luckily was pre empted by a two day trip to the mountains. Ixtapec de Juarez is a little eco-tourism resort run by the local town and the money generated goes back into the community. There is zip-lining, hiking, mountain biking, horse back riding and more. The cabins were lovely and all had fireplaces (which were very welcome all day a night). It was an interesting experience because it was really, really cold! One never thinks of Mexico as a place where it gets bellow zero, but I ... read more

Although it is only 8am when I arrive, the humidity is much worse then Oaxaca City and the 25 min trek with my rucsack to a cabana hostel, which I believe to be somewhere up the hill from the few kilometres long Zicatela beach, is a sweaty one. Got a cabana (like a wooden shed with electricity and hammock out front) for 3 GBP/night. Puerto Escondido is one of the handful of sleepy fishing villiages along the Mexico's pacific coast that have grown rapidly since the 80's as a holiday destination for Mexican tourists and surfers. The Zicatela beach has some nasty rip tides (no swimming) but attracts surfers as is supposed to be one of the best surfing in Mexico and hosts international surf competitions. Most of the pedestrian area was dug up as they ... read more

We spent just under a week in Puerto Escondido enjoying some much needed sun and surf. Puerto is not only beautiful, with stunning beaches, it is also filled with surfers and so has a great night life and atmosphere. They made the view from our sun loungers even better, as there were always surfers out catching waves, or just walking around, and with their very tanned and toned bodies they made a great view! We stayed in these cabanas on the beach at Buena Onda - which kind of translates as good vibe. The accomadation was the best I have stayed in so far, all really nicely decorated and owned by a lovely french couple. We made a good group of friends there almost as soon as we arrived and had a wonderful week hanging out ... read more

Hey everyone a quick update: I traveled the rest of the Yucatan, and the states of Chiapas, Oaxaca and a little bit of Veracruz for a little under 3 weeks. It was great to explore the untouched beaches with the softest white sand made out of limestone annd great winds to try kitesurfing and some sailing. I also explored a lot of the mayans ruins and used the knowledge of my past clases (mainly geography of latin america) to completely understand how the regions - the people and land work. I have to say, the mayan are way advanced and brillant. Chiapas was great. I definitly recommend Palenque: its a town (really small and not that interesting) with great ruins in the jungle. I easily spent 3 days- 2 nights living in cabnanas that felt like ... read more
