Sadly we left Oaxaca but GLADLY for the beach! Thanks to Graham and his generous Xmas gift to us all, we didn't have to take the 7 hour barf shuttle to Puerto Escondido but a quick 1/2 hour jaunt straight South in a 6 seat plane. WAIT! SIX SEATS AND THAT INCLUDES THE PILOT??!! When we arrived at the airport, I had no idea what we were in for. The man who checked us in told us we had too much luggage and that it would be too heavy for the plane. However, a monetary bribe seemed to make our luggage A LOT lighter. We boarded so quickly that I didn't have time to panic. Graham sat in the co-pilot seat. It was 30 minutes of sheer terror and excitement. We landed safely and the pilot ... read more

One of the best things about hopping around countries like some drunk fugitive is occasionally you arrive somewhere you only heard of the day before, and it turns out to be fantastic. Cuidad Valles is like that. I only stepped off the bus there as it seemed relatively near to Xilitla (pronounced Hi Hitler), which I'd read about in the guide, but what I found was an epicentre of extreme sports. Valles itself isn't particularly impressive. It hasn't got much of a nightlife, and can't really claim a ruin to put itself on the map. But it is situated 10 minutes driving distance from some of the best kayaking and white water rafting rivers in Mexico. That, coupled with zip lines, rockclimbing, canyoning (the art of jumping off cliffs into big pools of water) and pretty ... read more

Hej folkens.

Puerto Escondido is a small surfing town on the Pacific coast. We had an amazing room with an ocean view and private balcony (quite an improvement from most of our living arrangements). I spent these few days reading and relaxing while Dana surfed the world-renowned, Mexican Pipeline. For a 2 day side trip we went to Chacawa, a very isolated village of 100 people reached by bus, taxi, boat, then truck. We stayed in a little wood shack close to a surf break and Dana spent his time out surfing again while I chilled in a hammock. All of a sudden a few days before our flight home all the Mexicans were on their holidays and all the buses were booked. We had to reroute and go through Mexico City to try and get up to ... read more

Jeg kunne ... read more

I´ve just got back from a brilliant way to wake up - a breezy boat trip to see the local dolphins. Despite both feeling pretty incredibly sleepy having got up before sunrise for once, we still managed to enjoy the morning, and arrived to see the sun coming up somewhere inland, casting a purpley haze over the beach, where ten or so men were pushing fiswhing boats into the water. We were chatting to a man called Shaun, who asked us first if we had our wallets, then if we knew Carol (I have discovered it is withoute -e) - she´d managed to forget her own wallet when she last came. The morning was coming on beautifully, the sunlight already starting to get hot, the sea was a very opaque shade of mauve, and we already ... read more

Don´t you just hate it when Belgians are right? We took the bus from Oaxaca to Puerto Escondido on Tuesday night, arriving quite early at the bus station, but managing to check in and check our baggage with minimal fuss. To while away the time before departure, we had a delicious Oaxaqueno hot chocolate - they heat the milk, break the special chocolate in and whisk it, and it´s beautiful, chocolately and spicey and just the think to get you thinking about sleep. While we drank it, we marvelled at the guy opposite who had a moustache the went from his upper lip almost right round his head. Loco. The ten hour jouney in the dark round steep roads and deep ravines sisn´t exactly allow for an easy sleep. Sitting in the aisle seat, I was ... read more

Hola Amigos Puerto Vallarta was a great way to ease us into Mexico. A very tourist orientated city, third most visted in all of Mexico. Lots of cruise ships and resorts and the Gay capital of Central America. Nothing like hairy men in speedos! It was also a refreshing change to be in such a cheap place after Argentina and USA. We were also lucky enough to meet a great group of people which made the stay even better. Who would have thought 2 Californian Probation officers and a Canadian from the middle of nowhere could be so much fun. We ended up on a whale watching cruise which didn´t actually include seeing any whales but instead did have a boat load full of free beer and tequilla (no complaints here). We managed to get a ... read more

We arrived bleary eyed in Puerto Escondido after completing our thirteen hour overnight bus journey from San Cristobal. Having had a decent amount of kip between us on Mexico’s comfy, albeit a little pricey, first class bus service followed by a quick stop for breakfast and we felt ready to commence the accommodation search. Not wooed at our first stop with its brash American owner trying to pressure us with promises of ‘nice sheets’ and ‘a great time’ instead we plumped for our second stop which looked to fit the bill. Hostel Puerto Escondido was a pretty barebones but with all the backpacker essentials and an enticing price tag (a third of the first hostel we looked at) we checked in. Puerto Escondido is another one of those tourist invaded fishing villages. The good thing was ... read more

Tim Version: * Searched longer than ever before for a good hostel and still didn't find one! * Checked out the wave and while it was just OK it really needs the right season to work. * Bit disappointed by the place really.... The version that entered with a jittery excitement, and left with a bad taste in its mouth: Puerto Escondido! While this isn't a surfing trip, and every time I surf I find I suck more and more as what little skill I had drains away, I still get little-kid-at-disney-land excited by a chance to surf, or really just a chance to hit up a beach with any waves! Puerto Escondido, meant to be incredible! I've seen videos of the waves here that would make you... well, it'd scare you a lot heh. Entering ... read more
