Hola Amigos

Puerto Vallarta was a great way to ease us into Mexico. A very tourist orientated city, third most visted in all of Mexico. Lots of cruise ships and resorts and the Gay capital of Central America. Nothing like hairy men in speedos! It was also a refreshing change to be in such a cheap place after Argentina and USA. We were also lucky enough to meet a great group of people which made the stay even better. Who would have thought 2 Californian Probation officers and a Canadian from the middle of nowhere could be so much fun.

We ended up on a whale watching cruise which didnĀ“t actually include seeing any whales but instead did have a boat load full of free beer and tequilla (no complaints here).

We managed to get a really cheap flight up to Mexico City and then a bus directly to Teotihucan. Third largest pyramid in the world. We spent a good day walking around the site and hopefully got some good photos.

We got a tip about another good stop off called Puebla so we decided to spend a couple of nights there. We had the friendliest hotel

manager who was keeping up to date on Australian news for us. Our first night there was a normal Sunday for the locals - the main sqaure was full of clowns, dancers and bands. Fantastic, nothing like it back home. The next day, on a tip from a taxi driver, we got a bus out to Cholula to see what is apparently the widest pyramid in the world. It looks so much like a hill that the Spanish managed to build a church upon it without realizing it at the time. Nowadays they have managed to excavate some of the old Zapotec tunnels inside the pyramid, and huge portions of the outside (church still on top though). We were able to walk through the tunnels which was fantastic.

A short bus trip later and we were in Oaxaca. This was a great place with beautiful old bulidings and a big plaza in the middle of the town. We did a tour from here which included seeing the widest tree in the world, a hand made textiles town where the locals speak a 4000 year old language, some more ruins in a place called Mitla, some cold springs with a

frozen waterfall, and last stop, a mezcal factory (part of the tequilla family). It was a good thing that the mezcal factory was the last stop as they had 15 free shots per person. The textile town was one of the highlights - its amazing how they make everything - they colour all the wool from organic material including moss, flowers, and dead insects found on cactus. It turns out that the dead insects can sell for US$300 per kilo!

After a steady stream of sight seeing we decided to stay in a lovely little cabana, overlooking the pool, in front of Zicatela beach in Puerto Escondido. Unfortunately we couldn't swim at Zicatella because the waves were for professional surfers only- massive barrels on a beach break, Nichola, Im sure you would've loved the place! We did however manage to get some surfing in at a more appropriate beach for us. While we were in Puerto Escondido we went to a cute little cafe and Garry decided he would ask in his best spanish for some hot chile salsa to accompany his meal. Forty minutes later, the cook comes out with some carefully cut up, rather large, extremely hot

chilies which had been warmed up in a pan. After the effort the cook had been to, Garry felt obliged to eat as much of it as he could - needless to say, it was quite a challenge!
