Sunday, March 9, 2014 Easy day to write about because we didn't do much. Ping the cat woke us up prematurely so we ate an early breakfast at Cafecito. We swam. Joe went shopping for fruit and coffee. I read a book. Joe cooked dinner...great quesadillas and rice and replicated that wonderfully refreshing limonada I had last night at the Pescador. He picked the limes from the tree in the yard where we swim in the pool. Joe did his laundry and I had great intentions of doing mine. And as every day, we met more Canadians. Joe just now jokingly told me he needs to get to bed early because he has a horseshoe tournament tomorrow. Life is tough. He's been reading about how to throw horseshoes on the internet. We'll see if it does ... read more

Sat., March 8, 2014 It was another early morning wake up alarm for us. We slathered on the sunscreen, walked up to the highway and waved down a colectivo that took us a few miles west where we got off to walk about a mile and a half to La Barre #1 where a surfing competition was being held. Our friend David told us the winners would be going on to compete in Ecuador. We were hoping to cheer for him but David wasn't there as he had to go meet with the city to fight them about the legality of him putting tables on the sidewalk in front of his cafe. The waves weren't exactly cooperating but we did see some pretty good surfers. We also liked seeing the bird life in the estuary there. ... read more

March 7, 2014 A van arrived at our house at 7 am to take us to Manialtepec Lagoon which is 15 miles northwest of Puerto Escondido. We had booked a boat tour with ornithologist Mike Malone to view the many species of tropical birds. Manialtepec means "the place where water springs from the hills" and it is a lovely tranquil lagoon encircled by mangroves. We enjoyed the trip, the lagoon is alive with many bird species and we were impressed with our talented Mexican boatman's bird calls. Joe made several good spots for the group, too. We stopped for an early lunch at a rustic cafe set up on the beach and the owners made sopes for us which are simply little tortillas with beans and a little bit of cheese. The coconut water and beer ... read more

March 3, 2014 Lazy day...breakfast at Cafecito...Joe and Roger played in the horseshoe tournament at the Split Coconut...Joe and I watched the surfers at sunset, got some tacos to go, and ate grapefruit frozen yogurt on the shop balcony. Had a panicky 15 minutes when I couldn't find my prescription sunglasses. Finally found them in Joe's eyeglass case. His glasses were on the dresser. The maid did it. Good thing we don't have a maid at home, we'd never be able to find anything. March 4, 2014 We were up early to walk east 1.2 miles along Playa Zicatela to The Point. We watched the surfers there for quite some time then ate breakfast at a great little cafe nestled in the palm trees. We hadn't explored this area before and thought it was charming. We ... read more

Wed., Feb. 26, 2014 Today was market day so we caught the little colectivo and rode it to the town market, got a few fresh fruits and vegetables, and ate lunch at Roger's favorite market cafe. Joe and I shared chili rellano tacos that were delicious. The rest of the day was spent taking it easy reading and catching up with email. Joe and Roger went to Playa Zicatelo for the sunset happy hour. Thurs. Feb. 27, 2014 Today was another terrific beach day. We three walked over to Playa Manzanillo to swim, snorkel, and eat some of the best guacamole I've ever had. I'm pretty sure this is the first time I've had guacamole and chips for breakfast and lunch in one day. On the way home we took a scenic stone anador (walkway) of ... read more

Tues., Feb. 25 What a lovely day! Roger, Joe, and I got on a local chicken bus and rode down the coast east of here for about 45 minutes and got off at a small village called Santa Elena. From there we took a taxi to Playa Agua Blanca, a beautiful beach with a sheltered swimming and snorkeling area. We hung out at a cafe for over three hours, taking time out from the cervezas and great food to enjoy the water and Roger took a run on the beach. Tonight we once again took in the sunset on Playa Zicatela with happy hour at "The Spot." Had a light dinner at our favorite taco place. I think we are beginning to see why so many people come to Puerto year after year. It's a pretty ... read more

Saturday, Feb. 22 It was a lazy day with beach walks, meeting more Canadians, and enjoying a hopping Saturday night at Adoquin, an area of Puerto very close to Playa Marinero, filled with shops, cafes, musicians, and street food vendors. We had drinks with more of Roger's friends (he seems to know just about everyone in this town) at a bar on Playa Marinero, then ate street food (tacos, tamales, and a flowery nasturtium drink) for dinner. We had another beautiful walk home along the beach if you don't count the nasty dive I took after tripping over some knob thing sticking up in the sidewalk. Luckily, I fell sideways first into a tin corrugated door (loud noise) and that broke my fall some what. No major damage. I know that in Mexico one must always ... read more

February 21 Fun day in Puerto. We met up with Roger and his friends at Dan's Cafe, a block from our house, to join about 150 people (mostly Canadians) in watching the Olympic hockey game between the USA and Canada. Those Canucks sure love their hockey and it was fun celebrating their win with them Even though USA lost. I think that was the first time I've ever watched a hockey game on television and might be the last. Dan's Cafe is opening up Sunday morning at 5:30 am so customers can watch the Canada team go for the gold but Joe and I decided we will be asleep when that game starts. Joe and I spent an hour or so in the hammocks on our roof. My only complaint about our house is that the ... read more

About to start making out way to Mexico. 1.5hr flight from Cuzco to Lima. Then a 12hr wait at Lima airport. May venture into the city. Then have a 6hr flight to Houston and then into Mexico City. Hoping to book a flight to get down to peudo Escondido on the same day but not sure if we have enough connection time. 12 hour wait in Lima wasn't too bad. I think because we knew it was coming we could prepare. Spent a bit of time booking flights to Peurto Escondido. I went to a nail salon as had managed to pick off all of my shellac nails :) haha. The rest of our flights went seamlessly. Arrived at Peurto Escondido. Super hot. Cute beachside town. Spending 5 nights here. All we will be doing is ... read more

I did get the opportunity to go to Puerto Escondido from Santa Rosa with E-Costa for a political rally for the PRD candidate for president of Mexico, Obrador. The people of the coast turned out in great masses for this candidate. It was amazing. I have photos and videos. I will see if I can get the videos to upload this time.... read more
