On Oaxaca Street
The pet store has a few strange options. Wed., Feb. 26, 2014
Today was market day so we caught the little colectivo and rode it to the town market, got a few fresh fruits and vegetables, and ate lunch at Roger's favorite market cafe. Joe and I shared chili rellano tacos that were delicious. The rest of the day was spent taking it easy reading and catching up with email. Joe and Roger went to Playa Zicatelo for the sunset happy hour.

Today was another terrific beach day. We three walked over to Playa Manzanillo to swim, snorkel, and eat some of the best guacamole I've ever had. I'm pretty sure this is the first time I've had guacamole and chips for breakfast and lunch in one day. On the way home we took a scenic stone anador (walkway) of about a half mile of steps and little bridges that took us along the ocean below the lighthouse. We'd heard there have been muggings here but the guys assured me it was the wrong time of day for that and besides, Roger had his dog-scaring stick with him. I know you're not supposed to bring a knife to a gunfight, but had
to trust them that bringing a stick to a knife fight is ok. It was a beautiful walk, I have to admit. We stopped at Merlin's shop to acquire the ingredients to make our own margaritas.
Standing under a cool soapy shower at the end of the afternoon is almost as satisfying as looking at all those pretty colored fish through my snorkel mask.
Joe's margaritas were perfect, a good way to end a good day. I realize my photos are getting monotonous...beaches, water, Joe and Roger with Coronas.

A chill out day...reading books on the beach and doing some laundry. We tried another restaurant on Playa Zicatela, but won't go back. Overpriced for the quality. Best part of the evening was getting taro frozen yogurt and sitting on that shop's balcony watching the street scene below.

Back to the central mercado today, Saturday is the best day to go. Before shopping Roger, Gay, Joe, and I ate at this crazy wonderful place in town called La Juquilena. There were at least 120 people in there and we were the only gringos. They knew what they
were doing serving us delicious and cheap empanadas, filette pescado Mexicano, and a pizza-sized tortilla laden with all the good stuff. The only negative was that the coffee came sweetened and when Joe asked for it black they brought him hot water and a container of Nescafé. That's the way it used to be in the old days when we'd travel in Mexico, but we thought everyone had started serving real coffee now. We guessed wrong. We stopped at a cycling shop so the guys could arrange their mountain biking excursion for tomorrow.
In the afternoon Joe and I walked to Playa Marinero where Joe swam and I had a piña colada. We stopped by The Spot to pick up some more of that delicious guacamole to have with our margaritas with Roger tonight. Roger went to the Adoquin tonight to do some shopping, Joe and I are staying home.
Observations in Puerto Escondido today:
1. There is a dog sleeping in about every fifth doorway.
2. Topless sunbathing (women) is allowed on Playa Zicatela
3. The stuff in the aloe vera looking plant in our yard calms my itching bug bites a bit.
4. Six year old kids can actually surf.
5. I really really don't want to pay someone to braid my hair.
6. Joe fits the demographic for guys on the beach asking tourists, "Do you want something good to smoke?"
7. If I walk down through the meat booths in the mercado one more time I may just become a vegetarian.
